Introduction
This Design Basis report highlights salient features of design basis of the Bridge No. 395 for 32T Railway
loading Rajkot – Kanalus Doubling Project.
The design basis lays down the Technical Design hypothesis and the loads to be adopted for designing the
structures, the permissible structural parameters as per relevant Indian codes of practice and a schedule of
design and drawings that shall be adopted.
Open foundations:
Flexure theory shall be used for design of the open foundations and one way and two-way shear checks
shall be made as per the codal provisions. Grouting for ground improvement and rock anchors if required
on the basis of soil investigation reports shall be provided.
Safe bearing capacity:
SBC at founding levels shall be as per the Soil Investigation reports based on the confirmatory boreholes
at site.
For the combinations of loading under wind or Seismic, 25% higher bearing pressure shall be allowed.
Reduced area of contact shall not be less than as specified in IRS SUBSTRUCTURE CODE/ IRC:78-2014.
Design Loads
Design loads will be taken from the IRS codes and applied as nominal loads for the limit state analysis.
Wind loads as applicable for the relevant zones shall be taken as per IRS Bridge rules and IRC standards.
Seismic shall be taken as per the relevant zone and further detailed in below.
Rail Loading
Double track Broad Gauge loading comprising the IRS 32 t loading shall be the main loading for the design
of the Bridge.
Thermal Loading
Use of latest IRS substructure code as per regional climatic conditions shall be made.
Seismic Provisions
IRS Seismic Code-2020 for seismic design will be used for RCC/steel seismic detailing.
Wind
The wind speed, terrain and topography factors and height factors shall be taken as per the IS 875 Part III
as applicable to bridge site. Application and load combinations shall be as per IRS bridge rules as
applicable for Rail bridges.
Load Combinations and Partial Load factors
For concrete structure the combination of load and partial load factors will be taken according to IRS
concrete bridge code (New table 12). In this table the value of f3 shall be taken as 1.0 as IRS code already
takes this value into consideration.
Construction Tolerances
For Concrete Bridge Structures the tolerance of IRS Concrete Bridge Code shall be used as per Clause
6.5.
For steel structures Manufacturing Tolerances of IRS Steel Bridge shall be used.
Inspection, Maintenance and Access Systems
Maintenance provisions shall be specified in the contract. Ladder access will be required to all elements.
Landing platform will be provided as per requirement and site feasibility. Inspection platforms at pier caps
shall be proposed.
Design Standards
Available National Standards
The Indian Railways have a set of codes and standards for the design and construction of railway bridges
in India (IRS Standards). The IRS standards shall be supplemented by other Indian Standards (IS), which
provide some additional coverage.
