Tianzi Mountains

Tianzi Mountain is located in Zhangjiajie City, China and is part of the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area natural world heritage site. Tianzi Mountain takes its name from a local leader in the Ming Dynasty who called himself "Son of Heaven". Visitors can take a cable car up the mountain, which takes approximately 10 minutes, or walk which takes 2-3 hours. The mountain can be accessed by bus from Zhangjiajie City in around 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Why It Called Tianzi Mountain


Tianzi Mountain is named after the leader of the local Tujia ethnic group - Xiang Dakun in early Ming
Dynasty (1368~1644). Xiang Dakun led a successful local farmers' revolt and called himself "Tianzi",
meaning son of Heaven and is the traditional epithet of the Chinese emperor. 

Tianzi Mountain Cable Car


The total length of Tianzi Mountain cable car is about 2,084 meters, and the speed of which is about 5 m/s.
Most travellers choose to take it to up/down the mountain, which could highly save your energy. The time
needed for a single way is about 10 mins. You could enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way in relax.

How to Get to Tianzi Mountain


Tianzi Mountain is located at the Wulingyuan Scenic Area of Zhangjiajie. It is about 55 km to Zhangjiajie
City by car (1 h 20 mins' driving distance). It is near Wujiayu Ticket Station. You could take direct bus from
Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station to Wulingyuan Bus Station, and then take Bus No.1/No.2 for two stations.
After getting off, you need to walk for about 430 meters/580 meters to the Wujiayu Sightseeing Bus Station,
then take the bus to the Tianzi Mountain cable car station.

Remember the floating mountains in the Hollywood sci-fi movie directed by James Cameron–Avatar? Those
mountains really exist on earth with the name Tianzi Mountain in China’s Hunan province.

About how the Tianzi Mountains were formed


Tianzi Mountain was formed by the sedimentary rocks about 300 million years ago. The rocks, eroded by the wind
and water, gradually turned into quartz stones, thereby forming the towering peaks in the area. The area enclosing
the mountains features several rocks with the peaks covered by shrubs, trees, flowers and grass. The area is home
to waterfalls, limestone caves, rivers, lakes and wildlife.

When and how to visit Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve


The best months to visit these mountains are April, May, September and October. Board a tourist bus from
Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station to Tianzi Mountain. The bus journey takes about 80-90 minutes.
