CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

First of all mental health is a clear distinction often made between mind and body. But mental health
and physical health should not be thought as separate.Thereare various ways is which poor mental
health has been shown to be detrimental to physical health and vice versa.Mental health includes our
emotional, psychological and social well being. It affects how we think, feel and act.It determine how we
handle stress, relate to others, and conduct it to everyone who experienced it.

Mental health, although not a new concern, has become increasingly acceptable to discuss in recent
years.A growing body of research about grade 11 or college’s student mental health concerns underlines
the need for educators to consider,How mental health might affect students and what courses of action
are available.Third is imperative given how mental illness may hinder student success.Even though
mental health supports on many schools and compuses, research shows that these are often insufficient
to meet the demands of the students population. No research exist on the connection between students
in development education and mental health:This is problematic given the rising numbers of grade 11
and college’s students reporting mental health concerns, something that may hinder the success of
students placed into development al education.Nonetheless there exist links between learning and
mental health that should be explored in detail to better understands how instruction can benefit
students with mental illness

As when the crisis come to our society it really affected our mental health. One of the many that were
affected by this pandemic is Senior High School Students who were compelled to stay at home and
complete their education entirely through online or modular means. According to a recent studies ,
home quarantine has been affecting the physical emotional or psychological health of the students.
During pandemic they mostly suffered from stress , depression , sadness , fear , as well as emotional
disturbances. As adolescents are still mature , they lack the psychological and social skills to cope with
overwhelming situations.

This is where students who try to commit suicide are admintted because they can no longer cope with
their problems and lead them to this mental illness we called depression that the government is
focusing on today. There are students who try to share their problems with others in order to somehow
reduce it.But instead of reducing it has increased even more because of side comments that they leave.
There are students who think that the cause of their mental health is their own family ,because their
family does not believe them or thinks that they are just acting.Thats why there are students who prefer
to keep quiet because of they are exprerienced that no one listens, because of their silence they
accumulate problems that cause depression and lead to suicide attempts.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Many students experiences stress , frustation , anxiety and most commonly depression , but sometimes
those thoughts gain an intense momentum that brings students to a place where they may feel seriously
consider ending their lives. There are some students caught attempting suicide by slashing their wrist ,
taking over doze of drugs and others. According to Senator Hontiveros , one out of five young adult
Filipinos are suffering from mental or psychiatric disorder. An average of 88 reported causes of mental
illness per 100 000 Filipinos. From 2012 to 2022, a number of suicide causes in the country has steadily
risen over a period of 11 years

On the other hand , National Statistics Office NSO emphasized that mental illness is the third most
common morbidity for Filipinos. It was also stated by the NSO that the third most common forms of
morbidity for Filipinos is mental health illness. It showed that in every 100 000 Filipinos, there are 88
cases of mental health problems. 1.4 million people with identified disabilities showed that mental
disability accounts for 24 percent of disabilities according to a 2010 National Consensus.

Mental health problems among senior high school students are a problem that will strike students in the
first place. Among the effects of mental stress is depression, declining academic achievement and many
other negative effects that may impede the continuation of the learning process. Therefore the level of

learning. The results of the result of the 2017 National Health and Morality Review (NHMS) statistics
shows that the state of mental health among adolescents is alarming. This can harm the student and
adversely affect the students performance and future.

Because there are too many indicators involved in mental health problems, this study focuses on the
detection rate of two common problems in senior high school students: problems including anxiety ,
depression, school work problems , suicidal ideation and suicide plan. This study also investigated the
regulatory effects of relevant factors of measurement tools on the detection rate of mental health
problems. Giving attention to the present condition of the students who are suffering from depression,
it is believe d that having a doctor consultant is an immense help to the school to alleviate from the
agony of hopelessness and could prevent suicide among the students with mental problems or which is
high among people with depression.

analyze and deal with some challenges.Other than that, this study is also limited due to the financial
constraint because the researcher is a student and do not have well financial support in order to finish
