Lab 01

This document contains instructions for a lab exercise involving diodes, LEDs, and diode applications for a group of Bachelor of Electronics and Communication Engineering students. The exercises include: 1) Measuring the voltage-current characteristics of a diode in forward and reverse bias; 2) Building a polarity detector circuit using two LEDs; 3) Constructing AND, OR, and NOT logic gates using diodes and measuring their outputs; 4) Measuring input and output voltages of a half-wave and full-wave rectifier circuit. Students are asked to plot diode characteristics, determine component values, state logic gate functions, and compare rectifier circuits.

Lab Exercises Exercise 1

Figure 1

Build the circuit of Figure 1 using R = 1 kΩ. Set E to 0 volts and measure both the diode
voltage and current and record the results in following table. Repeat this process for the
remaining source voltages listed.

Plot the current versus voltage characteristic of the forward biased diode using the data
collected.(Matlab can be used for the plot)
Repeat the measurement in the case of reverse biased.
Is 0.7 volts a reasonable approximation for a forward bias potential? Is an open circuit a
reasonable approximation for a reverse biased diode?
Find the average AC resistance for both forward biased and reverse biased. Substitute the
diode with the respective AC resistance and measure both the current and voltage drop on the
resistor. Do we have an equivalent circuit?
Construct the same circuit but place a LED instead of the diode. Is there any change in the
values measured?
Exercise 2
Build a polarity detector circuit using 2 LED-s as in the following figure

Using the measurement of the exercise 1 related to LED-s decide the value of R and voltage
source.
Exercise 3
Logic gates
Build the following circuits

Where V1 and V2 are the inputs. State the functionality of each circuit. Apply output
voltage to a LED to have a better representation of the logic gate output.
Using the given logic gates try to build a XOR gate. (First try in Multisim than you may try to
built the circuit in breadboard).
Exercise 4
Build the circuit as in the following figure

Input voltage should be an AC voltage with frequency 30Hz and peak voltage 6V. Using the
oscilloscope measure both input and output voltage.
R can have a value of 1 kΩ.
You can use a capacitor in parallel to resistor in order to have an approximated DC voltage at
the output. (RC time constant must be much greater than the period).
Repeat the experiment using full-wave bridge rectifier.
