At the end of this module, you can:

1. Identify the current trends in IT
2. Determine the emerging trends in IT

B. LEARNING CONTENT
From our previous lessons, we have learned about media and information
literacy. In this module, let us determine the current and emerging trends in Information
Technology

Concept

Technology today is evolving at such a rapid pace, enabling faster

change and progress, causing an acceleration of the rate of change.
Technology has sustained us through the pandemic and now continues to
redefine how we work, live and interact.

The following are the current and emerging trends in Information

Technology
1. Cloud Computing
One of the biggest trends that have emerged during the past year
is that of cloud computing. It is about the delivery of computing services—
including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and
intelligence—over the Internet (“the cloud”). It is a designated place for
digital information and resources, and having a well-protected place that
can take care of everything and keep the information safe.

2. Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in
machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their
actions. The term may also be applied to any machine that exhibits traits
associated with a human mind such as learning and problem-solving. AI is
poised as a tool of choice for businesses and solution providers due to
cost-saving benefits, streamline workflows, enable more efficient
communications, improve customer satisfaction, and provide insight into
purchasing behavior. Additionally, machine learning can analyze large
datasets and provide scaled insight.
3. Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of Things is a concept that all digital devices are

connected by a single medium through which one would be able to
control everything within their homes The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to
the billions of physical devices around the world that are now connected
to the internet, all collecting and sharing data. Thanks to the arrival of
super-cheap computer chips and the ubiquity of wireless networks, it's
possible to turn anything, from something as small as a pill to something as
big as an aeroplane, into a part of the IoT. Connecting up all these
different objects and adding sensors to them adds a level of digital
intelligence to devices that would be otherwise dumb, enabling them to
communicate real-time data without involving a human being. The
Internet of Things is making the fabric of the world around us smarter and
more responsive, merging the digital and physical universes.

4. Internet of Behaviours (IoB)

The collection and use of data to drive behaviors is called the
Internet of Behaviors (IoB). An example of it is industrial sites having
employed computer vision to determine if employees were complying
with mask protocol and then collecting this behavioral data to be
analyzed by the organizations to influence people to follow government
protocols at work. IoB can gather, combine and process data from many
sources including:
• Citizen data processed by public-sector
• Commercial customer data
• Government agencies
• Social media
• Public domain
• Location tracking.
5. Intelligent Process Automation
Robotic Process Automation is basically the idea that ‘Anything that
can be automated, should be automated’. This year, we’ve discovered
something even more fascinating – Intelligent Process Automation. IPA, in
a nutshell, allows bots to benefit from the abilities of Artificial Intelligence,
Big Data, Machine Learning, meaning they can learn and improve over
time. This helps these intelligent bots evolve from the ‘If-this-then-that’ rule.

6. Human Augmentation
Human Augmentation means taking the help of technologies like Artificial
Intelligence and Internet of Things, to not only enhance our daily lives but
also to take human intelligence to the next level.Currently, the studies
have been racing towards helping people with disabilities with bionics
and prosthetic augmentation and curing sickness by experimenting with
genes. It can also provide opportunities for other creative functions.
7. Virtual Reality
Virtual reality is the term used to describe a three-dimensional,
computer generated environment which can be explored and interacted
with by a person. That person becomes part of this virtual world or is
immersed within this environment and whilst there, is able to manipulate
objects or perform a series of actions. Today virtual reality is usually
implemented using computer technology. There are a range of systems
that are used for this purpose, such as headsets, omni-directional
treadmills and special gloves. These are used to actually stimulate our
senses together in order to create the illusion of reality.

8. Augmented Reality
Augmented reality (AR) is an interactive experience of a real-world
environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced
by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across
multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, haptic,
somatosensory and olfactory. Augmented reality is another approach to
‘artificial experiences’ that individuals are now being given access to.
Augmented reality is seeing a lot more applicability outside the gaming
industry as well and is something that is seeing more implementation as
compared to virtual reality. Example of augmented reality is Snapchat.
9. Quantum Computing
Quantum computing is an area of computing focused on
developing computer technology based on the principles of quantum
theory, which explains the behavior of energy and material on the
atomic and subatomic levels. Quantum computing, on the other hand,
uses quantum bits or qubits. Quantum computing offers unique
opportunities for predictive analysis that extend beyond the capacity of
conventional computing. Quantum computing offers businesses a
powerful tool for predictive analytics and big data analysis. As we
encounter new problems, quantum computing will help predict viable
solutions, though it may not be on the radar for many solution providers or
channel partners just yet.

10. Edge Computing

Edge computing is a decentralized model which places computing
nodes closer to the source of interaction. Gartner defines edge
computing as a model where “information processing and content
collection and delivery are placed closer to the sources, repositories and
consumers of this information.” This model optimizes technological
interactions and reduces latency at the point of origin to enable more
effective and real-time data consumption. Edge computing is quickly
becoming the most efficient path for localized interactions.
11. Blockchain
The blockchain is an information system that holds promise for
supply chain management, enabling transparency into the origin and
journey of materials from origin to product. Blockchain technology will also
allow for better record management, providing a snapshot of any record
from its origination. This could be used to verify orders, purchases, returns,
receipt of product, you name it.

12. Predictive Analytics Implementations

Predictive Analytics is the process of analyzing large volumes of
data to be able to come to a conclusion regarding the possible
outcomes that a situation might have. Market analysts see this as an
incredibly valuable tool for brands to note whether they should be moving
in a particular direction or not. This has proven to be an incredibly efficient
method of analysis and saves the industry an incredible amount of money
in the process.
13. Smart Technology
SMART technology means “Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting
Technology”. This technology is used to provide cognitive awareness to
objects, by making use of advanced technologies like internet of things,
artificial intelligence, machine leaning and big data. Homes are now
becoming smarter thanks to the numerous integrated devices that work
to make our lives easier. Things like Alexa and other supplementary
resources have proven to be incredibly beneficial in this regard and
make homes significantly more efficient and safer in the process.

14. Big Data Analytics

Big data analytics is the use of advanced analytic techniques
against very large, diverse big data sets that include structured,
semistructured and unstructured data, from different sources, and in
different sizes from terabytes to zettabytes. Big data analytics allows
brands to process their information in a better manner and enables them
to reach a much better understanding of the areas they need to develop.
Big data analytics helps organizations harness their data and use it to
identify new opportunities. Big Data also gives us interesting trends like
Decision Intelligence which provides a framework to help data engineers
to design, model, execute and monitor decision models and processes in
the context of business outcomes and behavior.
15. Drones
Drones are more formally known as unmanned aerial vehicles
(UAVs) or unmanned aircraft systems (UASes). Essentially, a drone is a flying
robot that can be remotely controlled or fly autonomously through
software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems, working in
conjunction with onboard sensors and GPS. Drones offer a unique
opportunity to identify actionable tasks with much less leg work. Businesses
and solution providers can offer enhanced support and real-time services.

16. 3D Printing
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a method of
creating a three-dimensional object layer-by-layer using a computer
created design. It is the process of creating a physical object from a
digital model. 3D printing is an additive process. Layers of plastic are built
up one after the other to create an object. It helps foster the creation of
new products and new companies, and teaches skills transferable into a
wide variety of technical and professional jobs. 3D printers work much
more like plotters, moving a print head along both the X and Y axis to
draw a pattern. In the case of a 3D printer, the pattern is usually drawn
with plastic, not ink. What makes the 3D printer three-dimensional is that
once a pattern is drawn, the print head moves up (or the print surface
moves down), and another pattern is drawn on top of the first.
17. 5G Technology
5G Technology is the next generation of cellular networks and
services. It is expected to provide at least 20GBPS downlink and 10GBPS
uplink, which will make the 5G network to be at least 40 times faster than
current 4G LTE. 5G enables a new kind of network that is designed to
connect virtually everyone and everything together including machines,
objects, and devices.
