1 RRU5904w Description
The RRU5904w is an outdoor remote radio unit which is powered by a power cabinet. It is
the RF part of a distributed base station and can be installed near the antenna. The RRU5904w
performs modulation, demodulation, data processing, and combination and division of
baseband signals and RF signals.
With the software-defined radio (SDR) technology, the RRU5904w can work in multiple
modes through software configuration.
1.1 Exterior and Physical Ports
1.2 Version Differences
This section describes the version mapping information and application differences of the
RRU5904w in different versions.
The RRU uses a modular design. Its external ports are located at the bottom of the module
and in the cabling cavity.
Figure 1-2 shows the physical ports on the RRU5904w and Table 1-1 describes these ports.
Table 2-1 Frequency bands and RATs supported by an RRU5904w (850 MHz)
When the RRU5904w works in the RX frequency band of 814 MHz to 824 MHz and the TX
frequency band of 859 MHz to 869 MHz, it cannot work in GSM, UMTS, or NR FDD mode.
Passive intermodulation (PIM) refers to the intermodulation effect caused by nonlinearities in the
passive components of an antenna system when high-power signals of multiple frequencies are
transmitted. This intermodulation effect decreases the uplink sensitivity and negatively affects the
network quality.
When the RX and TX signals of an RRU are configured on the same port, the third-order passive
intermodulation (PIM3) may affect the RX frequency band. Moreover, the antenna system
(including but not limited to the antenna, feeder/jumper, combiner, TMA, anti-interference filter,
surge protector, and RET device) affects PIM3 indicators, which deteriorates the performance of the
receive frequency band and causes the receive frequency band even to be unusable. For example,
when the PIM3 is -140 dBc@2x43 dBm, the static receiver sensitivity of a single RRU channel
deteriorates by 22 dB or less for GSM and by 9 dB or less for UMTS/LTE.
Table 2-3 Output power and carrier configurations of an RRU5904w (850 MHz)
Each value of Output Power per Carrier (W) in the Typical Power Configurations document
indicates the maximum output power of each carrier under the corresponding configuration while
ensuring the network performance. The actually configured carrier power of RF modules can be less
than or equal to the value of Output Power per Carrier (W) in the document. The power
configuration that is not supported in the document may be configurable on the software. Huawei
can only promise the performance with the power configurations listed in the document.
When the center frequency of a carrier is within the 2.5 MHz bandwidth at the edge, the maximum
output power per channel is 40 W.
Receiver Sensitivity
The GSM receiver sensitivity, as recommended in 3GPP TS 51.021, is measured at the antenna
connector assuming that the channel rate is 13 kbit/s and the bit error rate (BER) is lower than or
equal to 2%.
The UMTS receiver sensitivity, as recommended in 3GPP TS 25.141, is measured at the antenna
connector assuming that the channel rate is 12.2 kbit/s and the bit error rate (BER) is lower than or
equal to 0.001.
The LTE FDD receiver sensitivity, as recommended in 3GPP TS 36.141, is measured under a 5 MHz
bandwidth based on the FRC A1-3 in Annex A.1 (QPSK, R = 1/3, 25 RBs) standard.
The LTE NB-IoT receiver sensitivity, as recommended in 3GPP TS 36.141, is measured under a 200
kHz bandwidth and a 15 kHz subcarrier spacing based on the FRC A14-1 in Annex A.14 (π/2 BPSK,
R = 1/3, 1 RB) standard.
The NR FDD receiver sensitivity, as recommended in 3GPP TS 38.141, is measured under a 5 MHz
bandwidth based on the Annex A.1 (QPSK, R = 1/3) standard.

The maximum level of cascading between an RRU and a BBU depends on the cascading
capability of the RRU working in different RATs and the bandwidth resources of the CPRI
ports on the BBU side. The following table provides the maximum level of cascading and
maximum distance between an RRU and a BBU when the RRU works in a single mode.
When the RRU works in multimode concurrency scenarios, the maximum level of cascading
and maximum distance between the multimode RRU and a BBU are determined by the
capabilities for the mode with the lowest capabilities.
