THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PAPAYA LATEX COATING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF WATER RESISTANT PAPER
Paper can be easily torn and once water adhered in its surface and it is no longer useful. With that
reason, the researchers decided to use papaya latex to enhance its property. The general objective of
this study is to produce a water resistant paper using a papaya latex. The specific objective is to assess
the effectiveness of the papaya latex by testing the water resistant property of the produced paper
using water drop tests. Papaya latex extracted from the raw fruit of a pie plant was used as a coating for
the paper. The growth of the fruit was not affected since the sap is already a waste material from the
fruit itself. It is a proteolytic enzyme known for its hydrophobic amino acid with an outer hydrophilic
core and an inner hydrophobic core. This material is in between hydrophobic and hydrophilic which is
still a great potential and capable of interacting with water. For that reason, papaya latex could either
repel or let water adhere only to the surface of the paper. This study concluded that the biolatex is an
effective water resistant agent for the paper.
