SB3203 RESEARCH METHODS & DATA ANALYSIS

Course description

The course will introduce students to quantitative and qualitative methods for conducting
meaningful inquiry and research. They will gain an overview of research intent and design,
methodology and technique, format and presentation, and data management and analysis
informed by commonly used statistical methods.

Objectives

The course will enable students to:

1. Prepare a preliminary research design for projects in their subject matter areas
2. Accurately collect, analyze and report data
3. Present complex data or situations clearly
4. Review and analyze research findings

Learning outcomes

The students will be able to:

 Construct a problem statement and evaluate it is soundness.

 Utilize quality assurance techniques to create sound research proposals.
 Construct and evaluate a methodology to answer the problem statement.
 Apply statistical analysis and mathematical modeling techniques on data from their field
of study.
 Identify research problems from practical problems.
 Recognize and explain the components of a research proposal.
 Demonstrate a critical understanding of scientific and basic statistical concepts
 Undertake critical evaluations of a range of numerical and graphical data and understand
how to communicate findings
