Activity 1: Answer the following.

A. Art Introduction and Assumption (Discuss)

Questions:

1. What is the meaning and importance of art appreciation?

Art appreciate involves understanding or analysing an art and breaking it down to it’s finest and smallest
details. It helps us students to give insight on what are those art pieces could mean. Having a critical
appreciation and understanding of an art will help us identify and decode pieces of artwork of our
history their purpose. Speaking of history, art appreciation help us understand the history and the
culture of the past by just understanding their art style and their techniques. By also gathering
information about the art of the past you can also use it the improve your own artwork. As for me that
likes to draw, this could be a good opportunity to learn new techniques and styles via just appreciating
and understanding one’s artwork.

2. How do you start art appreciation?

First off you need to go to a museum or a place where they display work of arts then start to observe
those pieces then see it in a different perspective. Well, you don’t actually need to go to a fancy
museum of any art exhibit to start art appreciation. An art appreciator appreciate arts that are not just
the high quality work of art or only the greatest art of all time. Art appreciator usually go around and
look for an art and then see what possible symbols that that art could have and lastly think of what is it
mean to finally understand the piece you are observing.

3. Why do people create work of art?

There are countless number of reasons or motivation for people to create a work of art. As for me I
create my own artwork for my own satisfaction and improving my art skills, I don’t usually show my
artwork to the public but I keep them on my own as a collection of my own works. Others could create
their own work of art to gain fame or made their own name known in the industry of art, some might
just be to make their surroundings beautiful and eye-catching. To some it might just be to express their
ideas and bring their fantasy into the world.
4. Definition of creativity and expression.

Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that
may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.

The process of making known one’s thoughts or feelings.

Expression is the process of making known one’s thoughts or feelings. Conveying of feeling in the face or
voice, in a work of art, or in the performance of a piece of music.

5. What is art history?

Art history – the study of art from across the world, and from the ancient to the present day – covers
virtually every aspect of human history and experience. This is because it looks at works of art not just as
objects, but as a way of understanding the world, and the societies in which they were created.

6. Differentiate art and nature.

Nature has its own beauty and art and is made naturally while art on the other hand is created by the
human mind by its imagination and creativity. Human art are sometimes just a ripoff or just an
innovative creation from nature. Example of that is nature has symmetry and the human mind finds
symmetry as beautiful and attractive, so we humans sometimes creates arts that are symmetrical.

7. Why is art ageless and timeless?

Some classical artwork are still famous and well-known today, art is just something that cannot be out of
placed no matter what time or era is it. Take paintings for instance, a lot of classical painting are still
well-known today throughout the world even though it came from different era and in different parts of
the world. Art is an expression of human emotion and those art were deeply imbedded by emotions
were the ones were timeless.

8. What are the limits of art?

There is actually no limit in art. However it is our imagination that is limiting our creativity. Art is limitless
and boundless, you can get inspiration from anywhere it is just our capability of imagining is the
hindering us in making new and creative way to make arts. That only happens when you yourself is
limiting your own ability to generate and accept new ideas. In summary, art has no limits yet it is only us
who’s limiting it. Even the human brain has endless amount of information to generate imaginations it is
just us who’s not able to express and decode those information.

9. Is art good because it is universal?

Yes but also no, most form of art express words and meaning but mostly through abstract visualization.
Take painting for example, yes it is universal; anyone can still get what you are implying through your
artwork yet we can’t be so sure that “everyone” around the world like this piece of art without receiving
hate or disapproval. Another example is when you what to show the world the same-sex
marriage/union. Yes, everyone can get what you mean but not everyone agrees on what you want to
express.

10. Why do we assume that art is art?

Actually there is no actual definition of art but what I know is when we say “art” we always associate it
with “beauty”. If the creation and visualization of human imagination and creativeness are things that
the artist believe to be unique and represent his meaning and standard of his/her beauty then art is
considered art.

B. Assumption of Art (Discuss)

1. Why art is universal?

For me, art is considered universal because an art can express your feelings or thoughts without even
putting a word into your art piece. Art has no language barrier meaning whomever is seeing it could still
convey and deliver the message that the artist wants to portray.

2. Why art is not nature?

As what I have said on Activity 1 – A number 6: Art came from the human imagination which “possibly”
came from nature or just the innovative imagination of human being as how or what nature is. It sounds
confusing but I’ll explain it; When we say “nature” – it is beautiful and is already a piece of art on its
own. Nature is natural, art is just an expression of human imagination. In short art is not nature but
nature is art.

3. Why art is involve experience?

Yes we can say anyone can do art but it is the experience that made one’s art better. It is our experience
that shapes our art. Without experience you cannot formulate something that you didn’t see, know or
experience. It is just like learning how to read or write, you cannot just know how to read anf write in
your own; you need someone to teach you how. Let’s say that you are creating your own story, you
cannot just make a story about love without experiencing love.

4. Explain the relationship of art and culture?

Every culture has its own unique or something that represents their culture within their art. An example
of that is the Higay-onon’s clothing and paint tatoos on their bodies which are primarily red and mixed
by bits of some colors such as white and yellow.

5. What is aesthetic emotion? Relate it to art

6. “ “

Aesthetic emotions are emotions that are felt during aesthetic activity or appreciation. These emotions
may be of the everyday variety (such as fear, wonder or sympathy) or may be specific to aesthetic
contexts.

Aesthetic context

• relating to the philosophy of aesthetics; concerned with notions such as the beautiful and the ugly.
Relating to the science of aesthetics; concerned with the study of the mind and emotions in relation to
the sense of beauty.

Art is about beauty and creativeness. You can experience aesthetic emotions during seeing, reading or
hearing anything that is related to art that captivates your attention. Once your moved by the beauty of
art and feel something about that particular art, that is aesthetic emotion.
7. Explain and give example: Art does not imitate nature, it imitates a creation, sometimes to propose an
alternative world.

Art is a creation of new things within our imagination yet it does not imitate nature but rather creates a
new alternate world. Art only imitate reality not nature. Yes art does imitate reality like objects like
nature BUT it is not the same as the real world, because artist applies their imagination based
experience to their work. So art does not imitate nature but rather creates an alternate world where
nature is different where this is how artist imagine nature should be.

8. How can the assumption of art be accepted?

The 3 assumption of art is:

1. Art is universal

2. Art is not nature

3. Art involves experience

Art is universal was accepted by some yet still debatable to some. The word “universal” is a term used
that means appealing to anyone regardless of their culture yet some argues that this assumption is too
vague. However art is universal because you don’t need a certain language to appreciate art thus
support the assumption that art is universal.

Art is not nature, I’ve answered it twice already but I’ll do it again either way. Art is an expression of
human imagination and creativity and does not represent or imitate nature but only a creation reality in
an alternate world. (A world where the artist imagines it what to be)

Art involves experience because without experience we cannot formulate something that you didn’t
see, know or experience. Yes we can do art without experience but it too far too inferior than someone
who has experience as he/she applies those experience and skills to his works.

9. Why do you assume that this list of questions about basic assumption of art has to have a coherent
message and a sound ending?

Actually this basic assumption of art are more debatable and questionable rather than having a clear
and coherent message. Most are too broad to be able to be discussed by me.
10. Art can be found everywhere what assumption of art is used?

I’d say in the art is experience, I mean everyone can create art without experience and they don’t even
realize that they already created a piece of art. Let’s take an example: A calligraphy for instance, some
might just say it’s just a simple writing skills but the truth is it is already a piece of art created without
the artist/calligrapher’s awareness.

Activity 2: Imagination and Expression as a way of life.

1. Who are the two characters from the lines?

The bold lover and his beloved.

2. What is the situation?

The bold lover wants to kiss his beloved yet she cannot because they frozen in that particular moment.

3. Why did the persona say “do not grieve”?

He should not grieve because they will always be their, though he didn’t get what he want but still gets a
few points.

4. Why did the persona say “she cannot fade”?

She will always be there, she will not fade; meaning she will never age and get ugly.

5. Why did the poem tell us about “forever”?

Because forever he will love her and she will forever be beautiful as they are frozen in time.
6. Explain what is the purpose of this ending?

Its purposely end to show that art could immortalize anything. Love could fade as well as beauty yet art
make those immortal, frozen in time yet still preserves its beauty.

Activity 3: Journal Entry

Supermarket Flowers by Ed Sheeran

This song is a sombre song written in memory of his grandmother who passed away.

It’s a great song I’ve listened to it many times already and enjoyed it. “When we’re happy we enjoyed
the song but when we’re sad we understand the lyrics” I’d say it’s true. When I heard this song for the
first time I said that it’s a fine piece of art. But after when my mother pass away, then heard that song –
at that time I wasn’t enjoying it, I’m feeling it the emotion and the message that the artist wants to
deliver to us his audiences. At that time my tears just keep falling, every lyrics of that song just pierced
through me.
