arc length is denoted by s, the central
angle is denoted by theta and radius is
denoted by r.

The length of the arc around an entire

circle is called the circumference of

the circle. Remember that the
circumference of a circle is 2πr.

An arc with a length equal to one-half

of the circumference of a circle is
called a semicircle. While an arc
length of a circle that less than a
semicircle is called a minor arc. And
an arc length of a circle that greater
than semicircle is called a major arc.

Let us take a look at the theorem on

arc length. Anyone please read.
(Teacher will ask someone in the On a circle of radius r, a central
class) angle (an angle whose vertex is the
center of the circle) of θ radians
intercepts an arc, whose length is
equal to the product of θ and r.

Thank you!
Simply the arc length formula is s=rθ,
while s is the arc length; r for radius
and θ is the central angle in radian
measure. In order to convert the angle
measure to radian measure, we need
𝜋
to multiply the 180 to the given central
angle.

Now, let us try a simple example.

What is the length of the arc that
measures 60° in a circle of radius
10cm?
(Teacher will ask someone in the Given:

Solution:
𝑠 = 𝑟𝜃
𝜋
𝑠 = 10𝑐𝑚 ( 3 )
10𝜋
𝑠= 𝑐𝑚
3
10𝜋
Therefore, the arc length is 𝑐𝑚.

known for being the first person who
calculated the circumference of the Eratosthenes Sir!
Earth?

That’s correct!
He is Eratosthenes of Cyrene. So, here
is the given problem. Eratosthenes of
Cyrene (276-194 BC) was a Greek
scholar who lived and worked in
Cyrene in Alexandria. One day while
visiting in Syene he noticed that the
sun’s rays shone directly down a well.
On this date 1 year later, in
Alexandria, which is 500 miles due
north of Syene he measured the angle
of the sun about 7.2 degrees. Given
the information, calculate the radius
and circumference of the Earth.

Anyone, what are the given in the Given:

problem? 𝑠 = 500 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠

𝜃 = 7.2° or 25
𝑟 =?

How can you say that 7.2° or is the Based on the corresponding angles

cut by a transversal, their
corresponding angles are
congruent”.
Very Good!
Now, let us proceed in calculating the
r. Anyone from the class? Solution:
𝑠 = 𝑟𝜃

500 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 = 𝑟 ( )
25

500 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑟( )

BSED-MATH
12,500 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
𝑟= 𝜋
𝑟 ≈ 3979 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠

Very Good!
And finally, calculate the
circumference of the Earth.
(Teacher will ask someone in the Solution:
class) 𝐶 = 2𝜋𝑟
𝐶 = 2𝜋(3979 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠)
𝐶 = 7958𝜋 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
𝐶 ≈ 25,001 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
Therefore, the approximate value of
the circumference of the Earth is
25,001 miles.

Very Good!
So, based on the calculation of
Eratosthenes of Cyrene, the
circumference of the Earth is 25,001
miles. And based on the NASA
Astrophysics Data System (today) the
circumference of the Earth is
24,901.45 miles. So, that was a very
close in the calculation of
Eratosthenes.

Now, let us continue our discussion

regarding on the area of a sector of a
circle. The area of a sector of a circle
is another geometric application of
radian. A sector is a part of a circle
between two radii with the given
central angle.

In order to find the area of a sector
with the central angle in radian
measure, we use the formula,
1
𝐴 = 𝑟 2𝜃
2
where θ denotes the central angle of
the circle in radian measure and r is
the radius of the circle.

Now, let us try a very simple example

regarding in solving the area of a
sector.

For example, A water sprinkler sprays

water over a distance of 30 ft. while
rotating the through an angle of 135˚.
What area of lawn receives water?
1
Again, what is the formula in finding 𝐴 = 𝑟 2 𝜃
2
the area of a sector?

Given:
r=30 ft.
3𝜋
θ=135˚ or 4
A=?
Solution:
1
𝐴 = 2 𝑟 2𝜃
1 3𝜋
𝐴 = 2 (30)2 4
1 3𝜋
𝐴 = 2 (900) 4
1 2700𝜋
𝐴= ( )
2 4
675𝜋
𝐴 = 2 or 1060.28 sq. ft.
Therefore, the area of the lawn that
675𝜋
receives water is 2 sq. ft. or
1060.28 sq. ft.

Now, let us try another example.

Crops are often grown using a
technique called center pivot
irrigation that results in circular
shaped fields. If the irrigation pipe is
450m in length, what is the area that
can be irrigated after a rotation of 240
degrees?

Anyone from the class, who wants to
try to solve this problem?
(Teacher will ask someone in the Given:
class) r=450 m
4𝜋
θ=240˚ or 3
A=?
Solution:
1
𝐴 = 2 𝑟 2𝜃
1 4𝜋
𝐴 = (450)2
2 3
1 4𝜋
𝐴 = 2 (202,500) 3
4𝜋
𝐴 = 101,250 ( )
3
𝐴 = 135000𝜋 𝑚2
𝐴 ≈ 424, 115 𝑚2
Therefore, the area that can be
irrigated after a rotation of 240
degrees is 424, 115 𝑚2 .

𝑟 = 2 or 48.7 million miles
Therefore, the distance that the
earth travels in one month in its path
31𝜋
around the sun is 2 or 48.7 million
miles.

Thank you group 4!

Now, let us proceed for the last group. Group 5:
Solution. With the given central
𝜋
angle of 2 and radius of 4 in., then
the area of the sector of the circle is
1 𝜋
𝐴 = 2 (4)2 ( 2 ) = 4𝜋 sq.in.

1
Note that the required sector is 4 of
the area of the circle, then we can
easily verify the above result by
using the formula of the area of the
1
circle, 𝐴 = 2 (𝜋)(4)2 = 4𝜋 sq.in.

Thank you group 5.

Next group. Group 6:
The angle to be found is known as
𝑠
the central angle 𝜃 = 𝑟.
Given:
𝑠 = 2.5 𝑐𝑚
𝑟 = 6 𝑐𝑚
𝜃 =?
Solution:
𝑠
𝜃=𝑟
2.5 𝑐𝑚
𝜃 = 6 𝑐𝑚
𝜃 = 0.417 𝑟𝑎𝑑
Converting from radian to degree:
180°
(0.417 𝑟𝑎𝑑 ) ( ) = 24°

Next, group 7. Group 7:
Solution. The radius of the flat
umbrella is 7 units. There are 8 ribs
in the umbrella. Since a complete
angle of a circle is 360°, the angle of
360
each sector of the umbrella is 8 =
45° because the circle is divided
into 8 equal sectors.
Thus, the area of sector:

𝐴 = 24.5 ( )
4
24.5𝜋
𝐴 = 4 or 19.25 sq. units
Therefore, the area between two
consecutive ribs of the umbrella is
19.25 sq. units.
Thank you group 7.
And for the last group. Group 8:
Solution. The diameter of the circle
is 2 units. Therefore, the radius of
the circle is 1 unit. Since a complete
angle of a circle is 360°, the angle of
360
each sector of the circle is 10 = 36°
because the complete angle is
divided into 10 equal parts.
Area of Sector:

𝐴 = (1)2 ( )
2 10
1 𝜋
𝐴 = ( )( )
2 10

𝐴 = 20 or 0.16 sq. units
Therefore, the area of each sector of
the circle is 0.16 sq. units.

Thank you group 8.
