I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
1. State and illustrate the theorem on length of an arc as well as other related formulas for central
angle θ and radius of the circle;
2. Recognize the formulas and steps for calculating the arc length and area of a sector; and
3. Apply the arc length and area of a sector on solving problems in real life situation.

That’s correct!
Our discussion for today is all about
the arc length and area of a sector.
Thank you!
Going back to our activity, how did
you say that the pictures in item
number 2 represents into an arc?
(Teacher will ask someone in the The three pictures represent a shape
class) of being curve. While the other one
is obviously an ark.
Very good!
If we are going to extend that curve,
what shape will be form? A circle, Sir!
That’s correct!
So, we can say that this curve is only
a portion of a circle.
EXPLAIN
30 E. Lesson Now, let us define the arc length.
minutes Proper Anyone who can read the definition of Arc length is defined as the length
an arc length? of an arc, s, along a circle of radius
r subtended (drawn out) by an angle.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Simply the arc length formula is s=rθ,
while s is the arc length; r for radius
and θ is the central angle in radian
measure. In order to convert the angle
measure to radian measure, we need
𝜋
to multiply the 180 to the given central
angle.
Very Good!
Now let us try another example. But
before we proceed in that example, do
you remember a mathematician

known for being the first person who
calculated the circumference of the Eratosthenes Sir!
Earth?
That’s correct!
He is Eratosthenes of Cyrene. So, here
is the given problem. Eratosthenes of
Cyrene (276-194 BC) was a Greek
scholar who lived and worked in
Cyrene in Alexandria. One day while
visiting in Syene he noticed that the
sun’s rays shone directly down a well.
On this date 1 year later, in
Alexandria, which is 500 miles due
north of Syene he measured the angle
of the sun about 7.2 degrees. Given
the information, calculate the radius
and circumference of the Earth.
Very Good!
And finally, calculate the
circumference of the Earth.
(Teacher will ask someone in the Solution:
class) 𝐶 = 2𝜋𝑟
𝐶 = 2𝜋(3979 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠)
𝐶 = 7958𝜋 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
𝐶 ≈ 25,001 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
Therefore, the approximate value of
the circumference of the Earth is
25,001 miles.
Very Good!
So, based on the calculation of
Eratosthenes of Cyrene, the
circumference of the Earth is 25,001
miles. And based on the NASA
Astrophysics Data System (today) the
circumference of the Earth is
24,901.45 miles. So, that was a very
close in the calculation of
Eratosthenes.
Given:
r=30 ft.
3𝜋
θ=135˚ or 4
A=?
Solution:
1
𝐴 = 2 𝑟 2𝜃
1 3𝜋
𝐴 = 2 (30)2 4
1 3𝜋
𝐴 = 2 (900) 4
1 2700𝜋
𝐴= ( )
2 4
675𝜋
𝐴 = 2 or 1060.28 sq. ft.
Therefore, the area of the lawn that
675𝜋
receives water is 2 sq. ft. or
1060.28 sq. ft.
Very good!

the area of the circle, then we can
easily verify the above result by
using the formula of the area of the

circle, 𝐴 = 2 (𝜋)(4)2 = 4𝜋 sq.in.
Problem:
For a 60-foot Little League Baseball
field, the distance from home base to
the nearest fence (or other
obstruction) on fair territory should be
a minimum of 200 feet. The
commissioner of parks and recreation
is making plans for a new 60-foot
field. Because of limited ground
availability, he will use the minimum
required distance to the outfield fence.
To increase safety, however, he plans
to include a 10-foot wide warning
track on the inside of the fence. To
further increase safety, the fence and
warning track will extend both
directions into foul territory. In total
the arc formed by the outfield fence
(including the extensions into the foul
territories) will be subtended by a
central angle at home plate measuring
96˚.
