Introduction
This WebQuest aims to improve the reading skill, speaking skill, listening skill, problem solving
skill, critical thinking skill, intellectual skill and improve environmental awareness of Grade 10
students. Another purpose is that Grade 10 students will be able to expose their understanding on
the given topic after analyzing the body of knowledge. Also, this WebQuest intends to broaden
the knowledge of the students and to appreciate other person’s point of view by sharing with
other participants meaningfully. Grade 10 students will learn about the environmental factor,
global warming, and they will learn how to get along with the effective penal discussion
discussing on global warming. Also, they will create their own visual art which illustrates about
the global warming to display.
The purposes of penal discussion are:
 To Provide the information, ideas and new facts
 To analyze the issue or problem from different point of views
 To organize the creative activity
 To interact with the audience with open-minded attitude, and respect others’ opinions or
ideas
 To be able to elicit the thoughts and discuss
 To clarify on the problem through the discussion
Here are some primary questions that will be answered by completing this WebQuest.
1. What is global warming and how it is different from the climate change?
2. What are the causes of global warming including both natural and man-made activities?
3. What are the effects of global warming on both nature and human beings?
4. How can we control the causes of global warming?
5. How can we work out on the foreseen impacts of the global warming?
Yes, this WebQuest is interdisciplinary because it can combine with the subjects like science and
language arts.
Dear students, have you ever watched the news and heard people saying that “Sea level
is rising”, “Polar bears and penguins are losing their places because of the melting glaciers
faster” and “Temperature is increasing”? Have you got any idea to share?
The next question is, have you heard about the “green houses” and “carbon footprint”? If
so, would you like to share your opinion or what you have known with your friends? Now, can
you guess the topic for today lesson?
First of all, your assignment is to do a WebQuest about the global warming. Can
someone tell what is a WebQuest? According to Abuhasnah, (2015) “A WebQuest is an inquiry-
oriented activity in which students get all information from the web”. Teachers will provide the
needed information including the links to the websites which are needed to read carefully. Then
you will also have a penal discussion on that topic and you will create an art for your topic to
display in the classroom. Teacher will explain in detail later. So, let’s go back to our topic for
now.
Nowadays, the threat of global warming becomes one of the most important
environmental issues to be managed carefully. The globe is heating up. Both land and oceans are
warmer now than they were when record keeping began in 1880, and temperatures are still
increasing. In 2019, the average global temperature over land and ocean was 1.75 degrees F
(0.95 degrees C) above the 20th-century average and it was the second hottest year on the record
whereas 2016 is the hottest (Pappas, 2020).There are a lot of prominent negative effects on the
essential environment of every being and we need to implement the solutions to save our planet
before it is too late.
Our earth absorbs the heat at daytime and emits at night in the balance. However, due to
the increase of gases from green house, industry and transportation, the atmosphere has to retain
more heat. Then, it rises temperatures and alters the precipitation patterns. The problems that
cause global warming include overpopulation, deforestation, ozone depletion, garbage dumping
and so on. So, in this project you will be exploring the important facts about the causes and
effects of global warming. There will be four persons in a group such as an environmentalist, a
policy maker, a businessman and a citizen to discuss the global warming from the four
perspectives. Then as a team, you will display their creative art which illustrates about the global
warming.
THE TASK
The time has come! Now, you are the experts who will discuss on the modern
environmental topic, global warming, from the views of an environmentalist, a policy maker, a
businessman and a citizen. Your job is to decide your role from the four above and explore the
topic thoroughly according to your role. Each of you will have different roles but you will work
on one topic together. You will need to cover the five parts in your penal discussion:1) the
significance of global warming and how it is different from the climate change; 2) the causes of
global warming including both natural and man-made activities; 3) the effects of global warming
on both nature and human beings; 4) means to control the sources of global warming; 5)
solutions for the expected impacts of the global warming. You may include any kinds of a still
visual art such as painting, drawing, poster, sculpture, crafts and photography etc. Within your
group of four, you may decide whatever role from the four above and start your exploring in
your reading before the penal discussion.
The Process
1. Divide up the four roles within your group members.
2. Each member will find his/her parts below by scrolling down the screen and there they
will find;
 their role on the page for penal discussion
 background information on why that person hold that position
 a set of questions to help you guide your study
 links to the articles to help you research your role
3. Read your role on the page.
4. Open the links and access into the web.
5. Meet with others who have your role to share your perspectives.
6. Meet with your group members to practice doing the penal discussion.
7. Use hooks to carry on your ideas through the expressive discussion after someone has
talked.
8. Come up with at least one solution for one member to solve the issue
9. Finish up your discussion before times up and you will get 20 minutes for one group.
Resources
For the penal discussion, all of the members must read the following articles to explore the
useful tips. The following guideline questions are provided to be able to comprehend better about
the penal discussion after reading the given articles.
 What is penal discussion?
 What are the purposes of panel discussion?
 What are the advantages of penal discussion?
 How can we organize effective panel discussion?

Environmentalist (Moderator)
From the point of view of Environmentalist, I will discuss three main resources with
environmental issues about the plastic or trash pollution, deforestation, and water pollution and
ocean acidification. These three roles are very important that we have to discuss and take the
action on that seriously. In this discussion, environmentalist will take the role of moderator
because the issue, global warming, is closely related to the environmentalist who is dealing with
natural harms and he/she wants to educate people by making penal discussion with the experts
form different fields on that topic. These are the following guide statements that I want you to
share from views of nature.

Policy maker
For this issue of global warming, I will discuss from the side of guiding principle or course of
action which have been set or issued to follow by the citizen. As a policy maker, I will set the
rules or strategies which are regulated for the environmental protection. I will discuss the
following regulations during this penal discussion:
 What are the policies set for the environmental protection?
 What are the policies presented for the business?
 What are the policies issued for the citizen to follow regarding to environmental
protection?

Business Point of view

One of the students will take the point of view of business man. You will find the information of
global warming and the connection between the business and global warming.

Businessman: First I will explain about the meaning of businessman; “A man who works in
business, especially one with an important position in a company or who owns a company.”
(Cambridge Dictionary. 2020) According to the scientist, they said that “Nature forces influence
the earth climate however human activity have been prime mover in global warming.” Humans
have been steadily increasing the amount of (greenhouse gases) GHG emissions, most notably
carbon dioxide, primarily through the burning of fossil fuels (oil, coal and gasoline) (EHS Today
Staff. 2001). This happens because the coal or oil burning process combines carbon (C) with
oxygen (O2) in the air to make CO2. To a lesser extent, the clearing of land for agriculture,
industry, and other human activities have increased the concentrations of other greenhouse gases
like methane (CH4), and further increased (CO2) (Twardy. 2007).

Citizen point of view

One of students will take the point of view of a citizen. You will find the information of global
warming and the connection between human activities and global warming.

Citizen: First, I will explain about the meaning of Citizen; “A person who is a particular country
and who has rights because of being born there or because of being given rights or a person who
lives in a particular town or city.” (Cambridge Dictionary. 2020) There is an overwhelming
scientific consensus that global warming is mostly man-made: 97% of climate scientists have
come to this conclusion. The reason for this is the increase in human-caused greenhouse gases, which
has led to health, ecological and humanitarian crises (Solaripulse Fundation, 2015).

Conclusion

After finishing the project, I hope that all of you have learnt about the threatening modern issue,
global warming, and you have also carefully considered the solutions through this penal
discussion. How do you find difficulties and challenge in finding the resources via internet?
Were these sites useful in building the body of knowledge especially for your point of view? Do
you think people in the reality can be encouraged to participate in environmental movement? If
so, how will you convince people to involve in this global warming action group? Do you think
all of the human beings are responsible for this issue? Why?
