Overview of the Gen8 logic board assembly

How to remove a Gen8 logic board assembly from a logic cage
Step Description
Note An electrostatic sensitive device (ESD) is any electronic device that can
be damaged by common static electric charges which can build up on people,
clothing, and tools.

Caution Because ESDs (such as circuit boards) can be damaged by static

electric charges, FSTs must be grounded by touching a section of bare, unpainted
metal on an EGM before handling a logic board assembly, an assembly must be
held by the edges to avoid contact with the electronic components, and an
assembly must not be bent, flexed, or placed on metal surfaces. Following these
precautions will lower the risks of having to replace an assembly and creating
unnecessary downtime.

1. Ground yourself.

2. Disconnect any video and network cables from the front of the logic cage
assembly.

3. Open the logic cage door, turn the yellow butterfly knob on the outside of the logic
cage counter clockwise to release the logic board assembly from the backplane,
and then slide it out of the cage.

Non-volatile data storage with battery backup

Note A Gen8 logic board assembly is equipped with non-volatile data storage with
a battery backup. These batteries are high capacity and non-rechargeable. No
charging is required, and battery drain is prevented while the EGM is turned ON.
An EGM can be turned OFF for several years and still provide sufficient battery
power to preserve any data stored in the non-volatile memory.

At a new installation, ensure to remove the anti-discharge tabs on the batteries

before putting the logic board assembly back into the logic cage.

Remove the
battery anti-
discharge tabs.

For guidance on recommended batteries and their replacement, see document 23-
01320 Extended power down advisory.

CFast card support

Note A Gen8 logic board assembly supports both RED and GREEN label 3ME4
and 3SE CFast cards for game content and G2S scratch partition support.
Aristocrat will maintain support for both RED and GREEN label CFast cards until
the inventory of RED label cards is exhausted; then, only GREEN label cards will
be supported.

Note A Gen9 logic board assembly supports only 3ME4 GREEN label CFast
cards for game content and G2S scratch partitions for optimal support.

There have been no changes to the firmware on the 3SE G2S scratch partition
cards, only the label has been changed to make the game and scratch partition
cards consistent for long term support.

Video card support

Note A Gen8 logic board assembly supports the following video cards. These
cards include an integrated cooling fan.

Caution Changing a video card from a GT 630 or a GT 630 Plus to a K 1200, P

1000, or a P 1000 Plus requires a compatible configuration stick for the logic
board assembly and the following cables…

• Mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort (Gray) (434960-1) for the virtual button panel

• Mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort (White) (434961) for the main monitor
• Mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort (Black) (434959) for the top monitor

Note The procedure to convert the components is the same for logic board
assemblies that include an Adlink Technology COM board with a silver heat sink or
an MSC Technologies COM board with a black heat sink.

Configuration stick support

Caution The BIOS, FPGA, and UBC chips must be oriented in the chip sockets
on the configuration stick in a specific direction. Orientation circles are printed on
the stick next to each chip socket and on each chip label to visually identify how to
orient each chip. A misoriented chip will cause the logic board to malfunction.

Note If a gaming authority in your jurisdiction has verified the applicable BIOS,
FPGA, or UBC signatures through the GLI Verify application, please confirm the
chips have been re-installed properly on the configuration stick.

Orientation circle locations on the configuration stick

Matching orientation circle locations on the chip labels

Caution Because a logic board assembly must be properly identified, the part
number label on the assembly must be changed after any conversion. Not
changing the label will introduce confusion in ongoing support.

The BIOS chip is installed in chip socket U6 with the orientation-dot on the label in
the bottom right corner. There is a matching orientation-dot next to the U6 on the
printed circuit board to assist with proper chip orientation.

The FPGA chip is installed in chip socket U7 with the orientation-dot on the label in
the upper left corner. There is a matching orientation-dot next to the U7 on the
printed circuit board to assist with proper chip orientation.

The UBC chip is installed in the chip socket U5 with the orientation dot on the label
in the upper left corner. There is a matching orientation dot next to the U5 on the
printed circuit board to assist with proper chip orientation.

Special Caution The configuration stick must be FULLY SEATED before

snapping it into place.

A configuration stick that is not properly seated in the Gen8 logic board card slot
can result in performance issues (such as freezing, re-booting, or failure to boot).
It is important to verify that the BIOS and FPGA chips are properly installed in the
chip sockets and that the configuration stick is fully seated in the card slot.
