GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Call to Worship
One: O come, let us sing to our God and make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
All: We lift our hearts and voices in joy and thanksgiving for being here together
in the presence of our beloved God.
One: Come, let us worship this amazing God, for we belong to God.
All: We will listen for God’s word and live in the hope it inspires.

*Hymn
Morning Has Broken
Morning has broken
like the first morning;
blackbird has spoken
like the first bird.
Praise for the singing!
Praise for the morning!
Praise for them, springing
fresh from the Word!
Sweet the rain’s new fall
sunlit from heaven,
like the first dewfall
on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness
of the wet garden,
sprung in completeness
where God’s feet pass.
2
Mine is the sunlight!
Mine is the morning
born of the one light
Eden saw play!
Praise with elation,
praise every morning,
God’s recreation
of the new day!

Prayer of Confession
Patient and ever-faithful God, we come to you this morning confessing that we can be
a grumpy and unsatisfied people. When things are not perfect in our eyes, we may
murmur, complain, grumble, and doubt. Sometimes we lose hope in the people around
us and, even worse, if we lose hope in you. Too often we challenge instead of accept.
Have mercy when we put you to the test rather than trust your caring love. Forgive our
doubts and complaining. Forgive our loss of hope. Let your healing, life-giving waters
pour over us. Restore our souls. Amen.

Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: Our hope and assurance rest in God’s unfailing love and forgiveness. Open your
hearts and minds and souls that the healing waters of God’s never-ending love and
forgiveness may flow into and over you. Know that in this love and forgiveness you
have encountered the living God.
All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Hymn
Great Is Thy Faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
there is no shadow of turning with thee.
Thou changest not; thy compassions they fail not.
As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

3
Refrain
Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning, new mercies I see.
All I have needed thy hand hath provided.
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,

sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
join with all nature in manifold witness
to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.
refrain

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow:
blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
refrain

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Leviticus 14:8-9
He who is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, shave off all his hair, and wash himself in
water, that he may be clean. After that he shall come into the camp, and shall stay outside his
tent seven days. 9 But on the seventh day he shall shave all the hair off his head and his
beard and his eyebrows—all his hair he shall shave off. He shall wash his clothes and wash
his body in water, and he shall be clean.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1989), Lev 14:8–9.

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

Reading from the Gospel
Matthew 10:17-27
As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good
Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me
good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder;
You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall
not defraud; Honor your father and mother.’ ” 20 He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these
since my youth.” 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell
what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then
come, follow me.” 22 When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he
had many possessions. 23 Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it
will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples were
perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the
kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone
who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 They were greatly astounded and said to one
another, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is
impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.”
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1989), 10:17–27.

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ
his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the
right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
AMEN.

I Will Call Upon the Lord
I will call upon the Lord
who is worthy to be praised.
So shall I be saved from my enemies.
I will call upon the Lord.
The Lord liveth, and blessed be the Rock,
and let the God of my salvation be exalted.
The Lord liveth and blessed be the Rock,
and let the God of my salvation be exalted. x2

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer
GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
What Wondrous Love Is This
What wondrous love is this,
O my soul, O my soul,
what wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this
that caused the Lord of bliss
to bear the dreadful curse
for my soul, for my soul,
to bear the dreadful curse for my soul!

6
When I was sinking down,
sinking down, sinking down,
when I was sinking down, sinking down,
when I was sinking down
beneath God's righteous frown,
Christ laid aside his crown
for my soul, for my soul,
Christ laid aside his crown for my soul!
To God and to the Lamb,
I will sing, I will sing,
to God and to the Lamb, I will sing;
to God and to the Lamb
who is the great I AM,
while millions join the theme,
I will sing, I will sing;
while millions join the theme, I will sing!
And when from death I’m free,
I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on;
and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on;
and when from death I’m free,
I’ll sing and joyful be,
and through eternity,
I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on;
and through eternity I’ll sing on.
