CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background
Writing has a unique position in language teaching since its acquisition involves
three language skills, such as listening, reading and speaking practice and knowledge of
others (Kellogg & Raulerson, 2007). Writing is one of the four skills that a person must
master when learning a language. Writing is important because it’s used highly in college
and in the workplace. If a person doesn’t know how to write properly, they won’t be able
to communicate well. Because communication is not only done by talking but can be done
by writing.
In writing, there is a lot of material that must be mastered. One of them in basic
writing is declarative sentences. This type of sentence is one of the most common ways to
convey thoughts, opinions, or facts in English and speech. By understanding what a
declarative sentence is, how it is used, and how to write it can improve a person's ability to
write.
B. Problem Formulation

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
A. Definition of Declarative Sentence
In English, there are four types of sentences, namely declarative sentences,
interrogative sentences, exclamatory sentences, and imperative sentences. All of these
types have their own functions and ways of writing. As in declarative sentences which
generally serve to communicate information directly.
A declarative sentence is a form of sentence that makes a statement, states facts,
offers opinions, or provides explanations. These declarative sentences have the
characteristic that the subject usually comes before the verb and most often ends with a
period.
Declarative sentences have two types, the types are simple declarative and
compound declarative. The difference is compound declarative joins two related phrases
together by adding a comma and a conjunction such as and, yet, or but. The phrases can
also be joined by a semicolon, with or without a transition word. For example "The sky
looks blue" this is a simple declarative example which does not combine 1 or more
phrases.
B. Recognising Declarative Sentences
Declarative sentence is known as a type of sentence that expresses a complete thought,
so that in declarative sentences there is always a subject + predicate (which is in the form of
a verb or auxiliary verb). And there are many ways to recognize declarative sentences in a
reading text. These include:
1. Always completed with a full stop/period (.)
Example: The sun rises every morning.
2. Used common word order Subject + Verb + O/C
Example: The sun + rises + every morning.
3. A sentence that makes a statement or facts
Example: The sun rises every morning. (it’s a fact)
4. The subject is always before the verb
Example: The sun rises every morning.
2
Actually, to recognize the declarative sentence is not difficult. Because these
sentences are the most common and frequently used basic sentences. In fact, the sentence
you're reading right now is a declarative sentence. Here is an example of declaratives
sentences in a reading text:
Emily’s Secret
Emily lives in a big house. She has a huge room. She has many toys and she has a
lot of friends. But, Emily is not happy. She has a secret. She doesn't want to tell anyone
about her secret. She feels embarrassed.
Emily doesn't write her homework. When there is an exam – she gets sick. She
doesn't tell anyone, but the truth is she can't read and write. Emily doesn't remember the
letters of the alphabet.
*Underlined words are declarative sentences
C. Writing Declarative Sentences
Writing declarative sentences is very easy. We just need to pay attention to a few
things, they are:
1. Do not end declarative sentences with a comma.
Cannibals do not eat clowns, they taste funny Wrong
Cannibals do not eat clowns. They taste funny. Correct
2. Do not use a question mark with a declarative sentence.
I wonder where he is? Wrong
I wonder where he is. Correct
3. Use the right word order if the declarative sentence has an indirect question.
The boss wants to know where has been Mark. Wrong
The boss wants to know where Mark has been. Correct

CHAPTER III
CLOSING
A. CONCLUSION
Declarative sentences are sentences that make a statement, state facts, offer
opinions, or provide explanations. Declarative sentences always have verbs that follow the
subject and always end with a period.
Declarative sentences are sentences that are easy to learn because they are simple
sentences and have a subject-predicate word order. Declarative sentences are divided into
two types, simple declarative and compound declarative.
