Sample Problem 1
A 30cm pipe delivers 2 𝑚3 of water per minute through a Venturi meter shown, where
1
𝐴2 = 10 𝐴1 . Compute the mean velocities in the inlet, point 1 and the throat, point 2
if the pressure head in point 1 is 6 m. Likewise, determine the pressure head at the
throat.
Answers:
𝑉1 = 0.47 𝑚/𝑠
𝑉2 = 4.7 𝑚/𝑠
P = 6m
1
ℎ = 4.89 𝑚

Sample Problem 2
An orifice of 50 mm square,
with c = 0.6 is located on one
side of a closed cylindrical
tank as shown. An open
mercury manometer indicates
a pressure head of –300mm
Hg in the air at top of the tank.
If the upper 4 m of the tank is
oil (sp. gr. = 0.80) and the
remainder is water, determine
the discharge through the Answers:
orifice. 𝑸 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟏𝟏𝟕𝟑 𝒎𝟑 /𝒔
Sample Problem 3
Water flows at a velocity of
1.42 m/s. A differential
gauge (𝐶𝑡 = 1.0) which
contains a liquid of specific
gravity of 1.25 is attached to
the Pitot-static tube. What is
the deflection of the gauge
fluid?
Answers:
𝒉 = 𝟎. 𝟒𝟏𝟏 SG = 1.25
