An Exciting Time the for Texas A&M University
School of Music
Dear International Horn Symposium Participants, Performers, and Presenters:

It is our pleasure to welcome you to Texas A&M University-Kingsville for the

54th International Horn Symposium! On behalf of our School of Music and the
University, we welcome you to our beautiful campus and we hope you will
thoroughly enjoy all of the musical, educational, and social activities presented
this week.
Hosting this event is a great honor for our University and the School of Music and
it reflects the hard work and dedication of our music students, faculty, staff, and
alumni. We are particularly proud of our horn professor, Dr. Jennifer Sholtis, who is
the organizer and host for this symposium. She has been a staunch advocate for
the “horn world” and she continues to be a great role model for our students. She
and her students have been working diligently to prepare for this event.
It is a very exciting time for the Texas A&M-Kingsville School of Music as we
have recently moved into our new state-of-the-art music facility. Our comprehen-
sive music programs include bachelor’s degrees in music education, performance, piano pedagogy, and
jazz studies along with master’s degrees in music education, performance, and conducting. Many of our
students and ensembles have competed in and been selected to perform at conferences and competitions
at the state, regional, national, and international levels. Our TAMUK Horn Quartet has won the IHS Horn
Quartet Competition twice in the past eight years. We hope you will find our facilities, faculty, staff, and
students accommodating and supportive of the many concerts, recitals, masterclasses, presentations,
workshops, clinics, and exhibits featured during IHS54.
We hope that you enjoy your visit with us in South Texas and that you have a chance to enjoy some of
the rich culture and heritage that our area has to offer. We thank you for attending the 54th International
Horn Symposium and we hope that you will leave with recharged batteries, passion for the horn overflow-
ing, and new musical ideas and inspiration.

Paul Hageman, Director, School of Music,

Texas A&M University-Kingsville

Experiencing the Untamed Horn at IHS54

Welcome one and all to IHS54! I am thrilled to serve as your host of the 54th
International Horn Symposium, the first in-person symposium since 2019. Along
with you, I am looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and to making new
ones. Grab a refreshment from the Laptop Bar and sit and chat at any of the Lobby
Café tables throughout the building. South Texas evenings are quite nice, so join us
for nightly post-concert activities at the east entrance to the music building for
Veranda After Dark. Enjoy the live music of our TAMUK student ensembles and
jump on stage for impromptu performances. The mic is open to all!
You are in Cowboy country now. Explore the area! It is the inspiration for the
symposium theme Untamed Horn. I challenged the presenters and performers to
be inspired too, resulting in an unprecedented number of original compositions and
premieres for horn. Untamed Horn theme also embodies our intrepid attitude as
horn players and our free and expressive approach to all our performances!
Let your experiences at the symposium inspire you in all future endeavors with
the horn and leave the week planning your next symposium adventure!
Y’all have fun now!

Jennifer Ratchford Sholtis

An IHS Symposium is a Life-Changing Experience

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is with great pleasure that on behalf of the Advisory Council of the Interna-
tional Horn Society, I welcome all of you to IHS54!!!
The annual IHS Symposia are wonderful and inspirational horn events. This
year’s in person symposium is even more special since our last one was in 2019.
At long last we again get to surround ourselves with people who love all aspects
of the horn. I cannot wait to visit with as many of you as possible throughout this
week!
It is remarkable how symposia hosts have been organizing this event since the
late 1960’s. What horn player can imagine; they might someday take on the im-
measurable challenge of hosting an international symposium? Only for the love of
this wonderful instrument and the people who play it do we gladly decide to ac-
cept this role. Besides all the preparation that is normally a host’s job, these past
years have been even more difficult considering the context in which we live. I would like to thank Jennifer
Sholtis and the IHS54 team for a terrific job and the Texas A&M University Kingsville for all the support.
Bravi!
An IHS Symposium is a life-changing experience!!! It is always great to hear people from various parts
of the world perform, present, teach, and share. I also love to visit our exhibitors to try instruments and
mouthpieces, see the latest accessories, and dig through the most recent music and publications. This
week I plan to sleep as little as possible and enjoy IHS54 as much as possible! I encourage each and ev-
ery one of you to do the same!
Do not hesitate to talk to anyone from the IHS staff and tell us your ideas, thoughts, or suggestions to
make our organization better. Together, as a horn community, we can do wonderful things!
Wishing you an amazing week and I look forward to seeing you around!
