ACTIVITY SHEET #2:

Argumentative Text – Transitional Devices

GEAR UP
PIVOT 4A BOW: Identify key structural elements (exposition, arguments, statement of positions) and language
features (transitional devices) of an argumentative text.

After the learners have finished answering this activity sheet, they will be able to:
1. identify the transitional devices used in argumentative texts;
2. use appropriate transitional devices in connecting ideas in argumentative texts; and
3. write a sample argumentative text using correct structural elements and language features.

ENGAGE
Transitional devices - are words or phrases that help carry a thought from one sentence to another, from
one idea to another, or from one paragraph to another. And finally, transitional devices link sentences and
paragraphs together smoothly so that there are no abrupt jumps or breaks between ideas.
Examples:

The following sentences are examples of transitional devices in an argument.

• Zoos preserve species for future generations, yet they could be considered cruel and unnatural.
• Animals at risk of extinction can be left to perish in the wild, or they can be protected by being
kept in captivity.
• The problem of global pollution is huge, but even tiny actions can make a difference.
