The custodian of Malaysia's rubber industry.
Established Since 1998
Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) is the custodian of the rubber industry in Malaysia. Established
on 1 January 1998, it has under its fold three well established agencies (RRIM, MRRDB and
MRELB), which are now merged into one, which have contributed significantly to the
development of the rubber industry for the last 94 years. The R&D excellence in NR,
accomplished by the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia (RRIM), has had an impact on the
Malaysian NR industry and other NR producing countries.
The primary objective of MRB is to assist in the development and modernisation of
the Malaysian rubber industry in all aspects from cultivation of the rubber tree, the
extraction and processing of its raw rubber, the manufacture of rubber products and
the marketing of rubber and rubber products.
The MRB welcomes any queries relating to rubber. For further information please

Introduction
The rubber industry is the second most important commodity industry for Malaysia after oil palm.
The rubber industry includes the production of natural rubber, rubber wood, processing,
production of rubber products and related services. In 2019, natural rubber and rubber products
alone contributed RM17.8 billion to the country's export earnings.
In 2019, Malaysia is the world's sixth largest producer of natural rubber with a production value of
640,000 tonnes after Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cote D'Ivoire, China and India. Majority of
Malaysia's natural rubber production was contributed by the rubber smallholder sector with total
production in 2019 of 578,600 tonnes (1,460 kg/ ha/ year) and the estate sector 61,230 tonnes
(1,550 kg/ ha/ year).
Malaysian Rubber Board can be divided into three (3) functions specifically conducting Research
and Development (R&D), industry regulation and technology transfer. The Malaysian Rubber
Board is responsible for transferring the technology generated from R&D to customers for
adoption. The technology transfer (ToT) undertaking for the upstream sector is to increase the
productivity of crops and rubber plantations to improve the socio-economic well-being of
Malaysian natural rubber entrepreneurs comprising smallholders and estates.
Technology transfer is a critical element in the agricultural development process. At MRB, the
implementation of upstream technology transfer is assigned to the Extension and Development
Division (BPP). This division includes the Extension Research Unit (UPPG), Academy Hevea
Malaysia (AHM) and the MRB Regional and State Offices.
Target Group
Customers or target groups are divided into two, that is special and general target groups. The
special target group is for the extension agents of implementing agencies related to rubber
plantations such as RISDA, FELCRA and FELDA, to the estate / plantation managers and rubber
smallholders on a targeted basis. While the general target group is to the public including school
students and institutions who want to know the rubber industry in general.
Technology Transfer Mechanism for Upstream
The technology produced by MRB is transferred to the customer through several technology
transfer mechanisms, among which are as follows: -
Seminars / conferences, dialogues / talks / rubber chat and exhibitions.
Courses and training,
Interactive meetings,
Mass media - Newspapers, radio, television, Facebooks, YouTube etc.
Publications - Technology Brochures, Science and Technology Bulletin, Monographs etc.
Advisory Visits and Consultation Services.
Model holding / Demonstration Plot and Technology Model as well as Technology
Adaptation Plot.
Implementation of Technology Transfer
Technically, the transfer of technology needs to be implemented through various approaches
and mechanisms. Similarly, the implementation, despite having the priority areas of each
Extension Research Unit (UPPG), Academy Hevea Malaysia (AHM) and MRB Regional and
State Offices in Malaysia collaborate to implement the function of technology transfer.
The main role of the Extension Research Unit (UPPG) is as a planner to monitor and evaluate
technology transfer activities through extension and development research approaches, Model
Holding / Demonstration Plots and Technology Models as well as Technology Adaptation Plots.
Academy Hevea Malaysia (AHM) has the role of transferring technology through training
activities that include theoretical and practical teaching sessions related to technology to their
customers. Theoretically, formal teaching cannot be fully adapted by the client. Therefore, field
training sessions are an important medium to enable customers to be directly involved in
deepening the technology presented. Here field training is conducted in the Sample Garden /
Demonstration Plot and Technology Model as well as the Technology Adaptation Plot created.
Meanwhile, the Regional and State MRB Offices act as executors at the grassroots level.
Development and development research plots, Sample Gardens / Demonstration Plots and
Technology Models as well as Technology Adaptation Plots are implemented by development
officers at this stage. Field training sessions organized by AHM were conducted with the regional
and state MRBs. MRB regional and state are also directly involved in the transfer of technology
through which include seminars / conferences, dialogues / talks / rubber chat, exhibitions,
advisory visits, and consultations.
The Malaysian Rubber Board has also established four mini stations (RRIMINIS) to meet the
needs of the regional and state offices in the implementation of technology transfer activities,
conducting technological adaptation research in addition to technological example plots. At the
same time, this station became one of the platforms for customers around the area to observe
examples of technology from MRB.
Technology Packages
Technology is packaged into three categories in line with the aspirations of the upstream sector
of the rubber industry, as follows: -
