first activity, let’s now proceed to our lesson today. Are you
ready to learn something new, class?”
2. Lesson Proper "There are underlined words."
"Class, based on the activity that we did. What have you
noticed from the given descriptions?" “I think it has something to do with the
professions.”
“Very good observation. Now, what do you think will be our
lesson for today? Do you have any idea?"
“That’s a nice answer! Now class, our topic today is about
modals.” "Modals are a type of helping verbs that
express ability, necessity, possibility, and
"To start with our discussion. Will you please read the permission. This include can, must, shall, will,
meaning of modals? (name of the student)” may."
“Class, we use modals in different ways, like to express our
ability, to ask for permission, the possibility and necessity.”
"Modal verb can is used to express a present
“Let us have an example of modal verb. Will you please read ability or an ability that still exists.
the first example? (Name of the student)." For example:
Andrei can sing high notes.
I can cook delicious food.
"Thank you! The modal verb "can" express the ability of a
person. Like for example Andrei can sing high notes, when I
ask Andrei to sing high notes right now, he can do it, because
he said that it is his ability. For the next example, I can cook
delicious food, this sentence expresses the ability of cooking,
and not just cooking but the ability to cook delicious food,
just like the ability of a chef.” "I can dance."
"How about you (name of the student) what is your ability?"
"Very good! We use the modal verb "can" to say or express
our ability." "Yes ma'am"
“Is that clear?” "Must is used to express necessity, a strong
obligation, or something very important.”
"The next modal verb is the word must, will you please read
it? (name of the student)"
"To express that the statement is an obligation, or need to be Example:
done, we use the modal verb must." The patient must take the medicine
now.
"Like how the example use the modal verb must. Kindly read You must wear a helmet when riding
the examples (name of the student)." a motorcycle.
"Because if the patient will not take the
medicine, he/she will not recover, and will
never be healthy again."
"Why it is a must for a patient to take the medicine right
away or on time? Yes (name of the student)."
"For safety ma'am."
"That is right! That is why medicine is a must for someone
who need to be healthy again."
"How about the next example? Why it is a must to wear a "We must wear a facemask."
helmet when riding a motorcycle?" "We must wash our hands with soap or
sanitize it."
"Very good! So, at this time of pandemic there are some
obligations that we need to do right? Who can give me an "Yes ma'am."
example of an obligation using the modal verb must?"
"The modal "shall" is used to express a future
"Thank you, class! Is the modal verb must clear? Did you get action that must be fulfilled by the doer of the
it?" action.
"Let us now proceed to the next one, the modal verb shall? Example:
Will you please read what is the modal verb shall? (name of Mother told me, "You shall clean the
the student)" room."
The contestants shall write their

future action that need to be done by the doer of the action.
For example, kindly read it (name of the student)."
"The given examples show the future action that the doer "The cleaning of room ma'am."
must do. What is the future action that the mother wanted to
be done?
"Write the complete name.
"Very good, how about on the next example?"
"The modal "will" used to express a voluntary
"That is right! So those are the examples of expressing action, a promise and prediction.
something that needed to accomplish by the doer, that future
can be later." Example:
I will pray for our safety.
"For the next modal verb, we have here the modal verb will. I will call you at 4pm.
Will you please read it (name of the student)" The summer will be very hot.
"The modal verb “will” use to express voluntary action, like
for example the first example, I will pray for your safety
shows the voluntary action. I volunteer or it is my decision to
pray for you. Another example, I will get you some glass of
water or I will call the doctor to say that she is already awake.
Voluntary action or it is your choice to do it."
"The next example show how the statement express the
promise of the speaker that he or she will call at 4pm, as the
listener you will wait for the call before 4pm. Another "Yes ma'am."
example is that, I will love you forever or I will be a good
daughter.”
"Is that clear?"
"”May" is used to express a possibility and
"For the next example "the summer will be very hot” shows ask for permission.
how the speaker express the prediction about the summer."
"How about the last one? Will you please read (name of the Example:
student?)" May I visit you today?
May I use the bathroom?
"To express possibility or when we ask for permission, we
use the modal verb may. Like for an example, will you please
read it (name of the student)?"
"From these sentences, what is the sentence that asking for "May I use the bathroom?"
permission?"
"Very good! To ask for permission, we use the modal verb
may. If we remove the word may in the sentence, are we still
asking for a permission? For example, “I use the bathroom?"
or "I borrow your book?"
"It is hard to express that we are asking for permission
without the modal verb may."
"We also use the modal verb can to ask for permission, like
"can I borrow your notebook?" "Can I use the bathroom?"
But the difference between the two is that, may is a more
polite than can. We usually use the modal verb can when we
are making a conversation with our friends or a regular “Yes Ma’am”
conversation. If we want to ask for permission in polite way,
we will use the modal verb may.”
"Is that clear?" Did you get it?
"Excellent!"

“Okay, class, before we proceed to your group activity, let us express ability, necessity, possibility, and
summarize everything we discussed about.” permission."

“Can you give some examples of modals?”
“Very good!”
“Yes Ma’am.”
“I can sense that all of you really understand our lesson
today. Did you really understand our topic today, class?” “None Ma’am.”
“Any questions? Clarifications?”
“Okay, then, let’s proceed to your group activity.”

"Let us have a group activity. You are going to complete the
given sentences by filling in with appropriate modal verbs."
"This activity is what we called "pass the modal" (Students listen attentively)

complete the sentence. To pass the modal you need to write it
on a piece of paper, once you're done writing the answer you
will call your teammate using the signal sound of your group.
Now think of an animal sound that you will use. After the
