OVERVIEW
TIMELINE AND BACKGROUND
◸ In 2015, Eyer engaged in a Continual Grading Pilot
○ The Continual Grading Pilot ran the course of an
entire matriculation of students starting in 6th grade and continuing
through 8th grade
◸ A Middle Level Grading & Reporting committee, comprised of both Eyer
and LMMS staff and parent representatives convened to review data and
make recommendations
◸ In 2019, a Grading Survey was administered to students and families
○ Multiple meetings were held in order to review relevant data and
discuss Assessment, Grading, and Reporting practices
◸ In March of 2020, COVID placed this work on hold
◸ In 2023, the Middle Level Grading & Reporting Committee reconvened
○ Created and administered a new stakeholder survey
○ Reviewed results and made a recommendation based on new data
and previous committee work
What is the purpose of grading?
● To continuously communicate to students,
parents, and instructors what students
know, understand, and are able to do.
● To provide information that students can
use for self-evaluation and growth.
● To provide feedback about student
achievement and instructional practice.
● To improve teaching and learning.
● Students are seeking more feedback from teachers
● Students are asking for more timely grading/feedback
● All stakeholders surveyed are asking for more consistent
assessment and grading practices
○ Grading structure / system
○ Number of assignments
○ Grading Scales, Extra Credit, Reteaching/Reassessing
● Families are asking for more feedback
Specifically in regards to “soft skills” based on our Portrait of a Graduate
● Families are asking for more information specific to student performance on existing
Diagnostic Benchmarking Assessment results
● Yearlong grading
Students never get a fresh start or reset
■ Sometimes fall so far behind they can’t dig out of yearlong grading
■ Students are not being held accountable for deadlines and/or consequences for
assignments not turned in on time
■ Reteach and Reassessment procedures are not consistent
TRIMESTERS
● Will allow for approximately 62 instructional days per marking period vs. Quarters that
consist of approximately 47 days
■ Results in students having longer periods of time to devote to curriculum &
learning
Ex: Longer writing assignments, project-based assignments
■ Faculty have more time to provide in-depth feedback and engage in academic
conversations
Allow for students to use feedback to self-evaluate and grow as learners
■ Aligns with Trimesters currently being used in the K-5 buildings
■ Parents at Eyer will have more timely feedback on student learning, growth, and
assessments
● EPSD Diagnostic Benchmarking Calendar
■ Aligns grade reporting with the existing EPSD Diagnostic Benchmarking
Calendar
