Euphemism
Figure of Speech:
A common aspect of human communication.
What is Euphemism?
Euphemism is a type of figure of speech that uses indirect or mild language
to express something unpleasant or taboo.
It uses a polite phrase or word that replaces an embarrassing, offensive, or
vulgar statement.
It is often used in a comedic way to create humor and make light of a
situation.
In some cases, euphemisms are used to imply a sexual meaning by using a
different word or even emojis that might resemble what is actually being
talked about.
Why do we use Euphemism?
We use it in order to make a statement less offensive, blunt or vulgar.
Also, we use to lessen the harshness of its meaning without actually removing
the meaning.
Lastly, we use it to soften the blow of bad news, making it less painful and
easier for them to cope with. It also makes a difficult topic more
approachable, and to show respect to others and protect their feelings.
Euphemism
Euphemism is the art of communicating something in a less annoying and
much lighter tone or in an indirect manner.
One main point you should bear in mind when using euphemisms is that
they are not meant to be sarcastic.
Let's have some examples of Euphemism:
DEATH
Instead of using death, we could use its other terms like sleep, deceased,
passed away.
We could also use the phrases “he’s with the angels now” and “he’s no
longer with us.”
Example sentences:
May I use the restroom? (Restroom is used instead of toilet)
We are letting you go. (Let go means fired)
I will be between jobs. (Between jobs means unemployed)
More examples:
"Senior citizen" instead of "old person"
"Correctional facility" instead of "prison"
"Adult beverages" instead of "alcohol/liquor"
"Vertically challenged" instead of "short"
"Pre-owned or pre-loved" instead of "used"
Summary:
Euphemism is a substitute expression used to replace unpleasant, harsh,
offensive, or embarrassing statements without directly mentioning it. Having
the ability to deliver even the most unpleasant notion in a pleasant and
acceptable manner is a skill one should cultivate. However, there will be times
where the use of euphemisms can create confusion or misunderstanding,
especially in situations where clarity and directness are necessary. Therefore,
it is important to consider the context and the potential effects before using
it.
