John Steinbeck (1902-1968) was an American author who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. He was born in Salinas, California, a region that served as the setting for many of his most successful works. Steinbeck enrolled at Stanford University but eventually dropped out to focus on writing. He received critical acclaim in 1935 for his novel Tortilla Flat, which was a bestseller.
