Ethics Prakash Sir Notes

This document discusses the relationship between ethics and human interface. It notes that ethics involves the interaction between similar or dissimilar objects. Ethics is a branch of philosophy that examines moral, immoral, and non-moral actions. For administrative exams like the UPSC, ethics is examined from how it relates to governance rather than as an academic subject. Ethics involves socially acceptable norms that can change based on societal values, while morality refers to personal notions of right and wrong. Values provide the foundation for both ethics and morality, but values are shaped by socialization like family and school, so ethics and morality are also influenced by socialization.

Ethics &human interface-

 Interface – means interaction b/w similar or dissimilar objects.

 Ethics is all together a separate subject/stream (a branch of philosophy)- At university level
o It has 3 sub-groups : Moral, Immoral, Non-moral (actions)
 But UPSC ask Ethics from Administrative point of view (not academic or as a subject but as a
object/value)
 E.g. - Hospital A& B, Receptionist and Kasab-lawyer, Zen master story
 Ethics &Morality in some aspects overlap &differ with each other in other aspects.
 Ethics= socially acceptable norms (we tend to confirm to them)- so ethics is externally
influenced. (and if society changes, ethics may change because values of the 2 may differ i.e.
absolute ethics doesn’t exist or universalisation doesn’t exist)- so ethics vary spatially as well
as temporally i.e. with time.
 Morality= conscience based personal decision making of what is right or wrong.
 Ethics &Morality similarity- arrives where personal notion& society sync. E.g. - Non-violence
preached by all religions as well as by Gandhi
 Ethics and morality influence each other.
 Values- abstract ideal upon which we attach importance. E.g. –teacher to have value of
dedication. It is the base for both ethics &morality. But values depends upon socialisation
i.e. family, school etc. therefore ethics &morality also depends upon socialisation.
 Ethics, morality tests human actions.
 Science is – either Normative (decision with description) or Descriptive (only description i.e.
fact) – This science is called Dimension of ethics. Case study deals with normative ethics.
