Point Cloud Feature Extraction

The document discusses point cloud feature extraction, which is a process for analyzing detailed spatial data captured by LiDAR scanning. It allows for the automatic detection and modeling of object details from LiDAR point cloud data. This provides more efficient and accurate spatial mapping than traditional manual surveying. Point cloud feature extraction has various applications, including asset management, monitoring, 3D modeling, and more. It is particularly useful in fields like infrastructure, mining, and construction. ASPAC Geo Survey is an Indonesian company that specializes in utilizing point cloud feature extraction from terrestrial, mobile, and aerial LiDAR scans.

Get Closer to Future Survey Method:

The Point Cloud

Feature Extraction
What is Point Cloud
Feature Extraction
Point Cloud Feature Extraction is a process
for processing scanned data obtained
through LiDAR acquisition. This complex
and accurate point cloud data can capture
every detail of an object.

Point Cloud Feature Extraction is the

method of detecting every detail of an
object collected in LiDAR data and then
modelling it in digital form by adding a code
or label so it can be recognized and
inventoried.
Excellence of Point Cloud Feature Extraction
Compared to the manual survey method, the point cloud feature extraction is the
latest breakthrough for obtaining spatial data and mapping it effectively and
efficiently.

The manual survey method through field surveys has weaknesses to be applied in
today's era of digitalization, such as:

The time needed to carry out field surveys is longer

The costs required to carry out field surveys are higher, especially for large areas
with many personnel
Purpose of Point Cloud Feature Extraction
The Point Cloud data obtained through LiDAR acquisition contain complex
information with high accuracy in the observed area. With complex data, the process
can be relied upon to identify the location and condition of objects and map them in 3D.
The point cloud feature extraction is carried out for various purposes, that is:

Asset Inventory and Management

Point cloud data can contain all asset details so that it
can use to support complete asset inventory and
management for many development sectors.

Monitoring and Maintenance of Assets

With detailed data and accurate extraction, the
detail of assets can be well-modelled, so it can be
used to monitor asset conditions and maintain assets
in poor condition.

Compile DTM data with high accuracy

One of the advantages of LiDAR data is that it can
capture the earth's surface better than other
methods. So, it can use to form DTM accurately.
Type of Methods TLS MLS and ALS
LiDAR data is distinguished based on the data acquisition method. Each acquisition
method is also adapted to its utilization in various objects or areas, such as:

Aerial Laser Scanning Method

The ALS method is a scanning method using a mode
in the form of a drone or UAV. Usually, the ALS
method is used for larger areas because of the fast
acquisition process.

Mobile Laser Scanning

The MLS method is a scanning method using a
moving vehicle in the form of a car to reach the entire
observed area. Usually, the MLS method is used for a
broader zone, such as a highway or a residential
neighborhood.

Terrestrial Laser Scanning

The TLS method is a fixed-location terrestrial
scanning approach. Usually, the TLS method is used
for single items or narrow areas such as buildings or
special zones.
Application on Many Sector
The Point Cloud Feature Extraction process has great potential to be applied to
various interests in various fields. LiDAR technology makes it possible to obtain data
accurately, effectively and efficiently. The use of point cloud feature extraction
includes:

Infrastructure
Point Cloud Feature Extraction is very well used for
3D infrastructure modelling and analysis and can use
for Asset management infrastructure or As-Built
Modeling.

Mining
LiDAR data is very up-to-date for use in the
topographic map of the mine area and 3D analysis for
mine volume calculations.

Areas and Buildings

Point cloud feature extraction can be used in the 3D
modelling of areas and buildings. Particularly the
substantial objects that have historical or cultural
value.

Tunnel
LiDAR data can capture every detail of complex
tunnel shapes, and point cloud feature extraction
can be used for the 3D modelling the various tunnel
shapes.
