Analyzing photographs
1. Observe: Visually describe what you see in the photograph (an objective step);
-What is the name of the photographer?
-What is the title of the photograph/ title of the series - BODY OF WORK?
-What is the relationship between the title and the objects presented in the frame?
-What may be the connection between the image/photograph and one of the IB
Global Issues?
2. Think: (Perform a technical analysis to draw inferences) - Visual Effect of the
photograph including discussion on:
● foreground/Background/ Negative space
● centers of interest; elements of reading reinforcement
● attributes/ light/ colors
● harmony and balance of forms
● the framing/ the composition
● camera angle/ shot and their implications
● depth of focus- If the main subject is in focus but the foreground and the
background are blurred, the photo is said to have a shallow depth of field; if
most of the photo is in focus, including the foreground and the background,
the photo is said to have a deep depth of field.
3. Contextualize the photograph and BODY OF WORK in a narrative way with all the
elements that are apparent in the photograph
● the environmental context in which the photograph was taken
● the personal history of the photographer
● the artistic and technical context of photography of the time during which the
photograph was taken (context of production for the image)
4. Wonder: Interpret the photograph in the light of your personal feelings
● What is the symbolism used?
● What imagery is used?
● How does the photograph/image tell a story?
