o Traffic & Pedestrians Control
Record Master Data:
o PUMP: Manufacture, GPM Rating, Pressure Rating, RPM
o DRIVER UNIT: Electric Motor Data, Diesel Driver Data
o CONTROLLER UNIT: Main Controller and If Applicable
Transfer Switch (Electric)
o SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: Throttle Valve, Low Suction, etc.
TESTING ACTIVITIES:
Water Supplies:
Underground Sectional Valves/ Street Valves Open (Verify)
Control Valves Fire Pump Rm. (Suction-Discharge-By-Pass
(Open)
Tank Valves
Tank water level
Suction Pits (Screens-Water depth- Anti-Cavitation Devices)
Backflow Devices – Full Forward Flow
Pump Unit:
Pump Alignment correct (Vibration – Noise)
Is Supply Piping to Discharge Properly Installed
Is There a Minimum of 10 Pipe Diameters of Straight Pipe
Connected on Suction Side of Pump?
Casing Relief Valve set properly?
Fire Pump and Jockey Start Pressures Set Correctly (Should
be Approximately 10 PSI Difference (Jockey Should Come On
First). Main Fire Pump Should Not Start Before Jockey Pump
Packing and Bearings Do not Overheat (1 Drip About Every
Second)
If Provided with Suction Control Device, or Pressure Relief
Valves - Need To Verify Items Function Properly
Does Fire Pump Discharge Pressure Exceed Rated Pressure
Limitation of Piping, Fittings and Valves? (Normally 175 PSI,
etc.)
Jockey Pump:
Record Jockey Pump Data (Manufacture and Controller Data)
Is Jockey Pump Setting Pressure Higher Than Fire Pump
(5 to 10 PSI)
Is Jockey Pump Capacity (GPM) Less Than One Sprinkler
Flow
Does Jockey Pump Activate Automatically
Controller Units:
Record Controller Data: (Manufacture, Model, Serial #, etc.)
Is Schematic Provided and Secured to Inside of Door
Power Indicator and Other Indicator Pilot Lights Working?
Any Loose/Unconnected or Temporary Wiring
Does Manual and Automatic Start Function
Required 6 Manual and 6 Automatic Starts
• Automatic From Drain Valve (Pressure Lines)
Is The Pressure Sensing Lines Installed Correctly?
Separate Line for Main Fire Pump & Jockey Pump
(2) Check Valves Each Sensing Line, with a
minimum of 5 feet of separation
No Shut-off Valves Permitted In Fire Pump Sensing
Lines
Is Fire Pump Alarm & Trouble Monitored at Constantly
Attended Location or Approved Site
Does Fire Pump Controller Panel Transmit Required Alarms
Fire Pump Running (Electric & Diesel)
Loss of Phase (Electric)
Phase Reversal (Electric)
Power Failure (Electric)
Transfer To Secondary Power Supply (Electric)
Failure To Start (Diesel)
Controller Switch Not In Auto Mode (Diesel)
Over Heat (Diesel)
Low Oil Pressure (Diesel)
Failure To Start (Diesel)
Battery Failure or Missing Battery (Diesel)
Battery Charger Failure or Loss of Power (Diesel)
Shutdown for Overspeed (Diesel)
What Is Timer Setting (Minutes)?
Test Power Supply Transfer Unit for Operation
Does Generator Meet NFPA 110 Criteria
If Emergency Generator Is Provided Does it Start
and Have Capability to Run Electric Driver Unit
Where Possible Disconnect Building Power Supply
to Verify Unit is Wired Properly (Should Still Have
Power)
Test Unit for Power Transfer at 150 % of Pump
Capacity or Whatever is Available From Water
Supply (Must be able to meet Fire Protection
Demand)
Test Transfer for Phase Reversal & Lost of Phase
Units::
Electric Driver Units
Start Fire Pump (manually). Verify That Fire Pump Rotation is
correct (Arrow on Pump Casing - Wired Properly)
No Excessive Noise or Vibration
Check For Slow Pump Speed – RPM (Could be Phase
Connection Problem)
Record Electric Driver Service Factor (Normally 1.15% of
Rated Amps)
Units::
Diesel Driver Units
Conduct Automatic and Manual Starts (Is Factory Authorized
Mechanic Present)
Check Unit For Overspeed Setting
Verify:
o Check Batteries for Electrolyte Level and Make Sure it is
Full and Checks OK – Before Starting Diesel Driver Unit
o Oil Pressure
o Operating Temperature & Coolant Specific Gravity
o Speed (RPM)
Verify Cooling Fan and Power Louvers Function
Minimum Fuel Tank Level (2/3 Capacity) Recommend It Be
Full For Acceptance and Annual Testing
Low Suction Devices: (If Applicable)
With These Type Devices May Not Be Able To Run Pump at
150% Capacity
Test Low Suction Units for Operation
o Throttling Valve Unit
o Break Tank
o Low Suction Controller
Flow Testing: (Safety is Very Critical When Testing Fire Pumps)
Are Hoses and Playpipes (Nozzles) secured properly?
Churn (No Flow)
