Effects of Modular Learnings To Students

This study examines the effects of modular learning on students' academic performance at San Mateo Vocational and Industrial High School during the 2020-2021 school year. It will focus on senior high school students and consider their gender, age, and academic scores. The study aims to determine if there is a relationship between modular learning and student performance, and whether students are unable to complete modules due to lack of time. It will be informed by theories of individualized and student-centered learning.

Effects of Modular Learnings to Students

Academic Performance

Chapter I

Background of the Study

Introduction

Modular learnings is a form of distance learning and serves as a complete guide

for both students and teachers this pandemic. The DepED implemented modular

learning to make sure that learning remains unhampered. Accomplished activity sheets

will be retrieved by teachers from parents by their schedule.

Academic performance is the measurement of students’ achievement across

various academic subjects. Teachers and education typically measures the

achievement of students based on the scores or grades achieved in the different study

courses, using classroom performances and results from given test.

Several authors agree that academic performance is the results of learning,

prompted by the teaching activity by the teacher and produced by the student. From a
humanistic approach, Martinez (2007) states that academic performance is “the product

given by the students and it is usually expressed through school grades.”

Modular learning is the most prevalent form of distance education. In the

Philippines, this learning modality is currently used by all public schools because

according to a survey conducted by the Department of Education (DepED), learning

through printed and digital modules merged as the most preferred distance learning

method of parents with children who enrolled this pandemic year ( Bernando , J).

The students in San Mateo Vocational and Industrial High School are

experiencing modular distance learning. The modules will be distributed by barangay

and the parents will get it, same as the retrieval. Accomplished Learning Activity sheet

(LAS) will be retrieved by teacher from parents by schedule.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is focused mainly on the effects of Modular Learnings to students’

academic performance, School Year 2020-2021

Students profile was limited to gender, age and the academic performance of the

students was determined and included in this through the use of modular learning

The study was limited to Senior High School Students of San Mateo Vocational

and Industrial High School located in San Andres, San Mateo, Isabela. The study was

concluded only to the students towards the effects of modular learning on the academic

performance of the students.

Hypothesis of the Study

The researcher expected to test the Effects of Modular Learning to Students

Academic Performance.

The following hypothesis were tested for significance and rejection.

Hypothesis 1:

There is a relationship between Modular Learning to Students Performance

Hypothesis 2:

Students who are not able to do their modules due to the lack of time.

The Assumptions of the Study

Effects of Modular Learnings to Students Academic Performance

The following statements are assured by the researcher.

1. The DepEd implemented Modular Learning to make sure that learning remains

unhampered.

2. Accomplished activity sheets will be retrieved by teachers from parents by their

schedule.
3. Teachers and education typically measures the achievement of students based

on the scores and grades achieved in the different study courses, using

classroom performances and results from given test.

4. In the Philippines, the Modular Learning is currently used by all public schools.

Conceptual/Theoretical Framework

Effects of Modular Learnings to Students

Academic Performance

This study anchored on the theory of Effects of Modular Learning to the students.

Modular teaching is concerned for each students as an individual with his/her own

special aptitude and interest, goal of helping each students to think for himself/herself,

and allowing the individuality to each learner. The emphasis must be on the one-one

students with unique abilities, aspiration, and influencing experiences and, again to

provide quality education, the teacher must personalized and individualized the

instructional program. When the teacher devoted to individual learning, he/she finds

time for personal discussion with students and giving them individual help. The

individual learning may help in developing many notable and self-reliant characters, and
in much more modern ways, students enjoy periods in which they pursue their interest

and satisfy their curiosities (Manlove and David, 2012)

Creativity, Flexibility, and life-long learning are requirements needed to be

successful in a real world. According to Struyven, Dochy, and Janssen (2010), in order

for students to acquire this skills, schools need to be organized around the learner not

the teacher, educational reforms have emphasized the concepts of students.

Centeredness as one of its threads. Student-centered learning takes the idea of what is

to be learned from what the teacher desires to teach and directs instruction to what

students need to learn. Classrooms are now considered as ”a center of intellectual

inquiry”, allowing students to form ideas, take risks, makes mistakes, critically think, fix

mistakes, and learn how to solve problem from those mistake. Interaction is no longer

between to student; It now needs to be multidirectional. Students, in the process of

learning, will interact with teachers, peers, and parents and even professional outside of

the school building in order to seek and understand their learnings (All et al, 2010,

Martin, 2005).

analyst and it can be a help as a future reference for more studies in the future.
Definition of Terms

For the particular study, the researchers define important terms that may

enlighten the readers. These are the following:

Modular Learning

Modular learning is a form of distance learning that employs the use of self-

learning modules.

Students

A person who is studying at a school or college

Academic Performance

Academic achievement or academic performance is the extent to which a

student, teacher or institution has attained their short or long term educational goals.

Distance Learning

Distance education, also called distance learning, is the education of students

who may not always be physically present at a school.

Retrieval of Modules

Is a strategy in which bringing information to mind enhances and boosts

learnings.
