Christmas is in the air (teacher’s notes)
1. Lead - in (Activity 1) 5 mins
Aim: to engage students in the context of the lesson.
Procedure: Ask SS to answer the questions about Christmas.
2. Vocabulary work (Activity 2) 3 mins
Aim: to brainstorm vocabulary on the topic.
Procedure: you can create a mindmap and ask SS to write down as many words as they know.
Set a time limit and see who knows more words on this topic.
3. New Vocabulary (Activity 3) 8 mins
Aim: to introduce the new vocabulary.
Procedure: Ask SS to look at the pictures and tick the words they can see.
Key:
Advent, chimney, fireplace, feast, Yorkshire pudding, Christmas lights, robe, sack, sleigh,
reindeer, stockings, holly, ivy, mistletoe, roast turkey.
Then check the understanding of the other words by asking them to make questions with
the words and talk to their partners.
You can also ask them the following questions:
1. Do you like eating robe or roast turkey at Christmas?
2. Does your friend have reindeer?
3. Do people live in chimneys or in flats?
4. Reading an article (Activity 4) 7 mins
Aim: to practise reading for gist.
Procedure: SS read an article and find differences in celebrating Christmas in their country and
in the UK. Accept all possible options.
Example:
There can be differences in meals, traditions, ways of celebration depending on the country your
students are from.

5. Reading an article (Activity 5) 5 mins
Aim: to practise reading for spesific information.
Procedure: Set the task and let the SS choose the correct word.
Key:
1. Boxing day
2. letters
3. stockings
4. Yorkshire pudding
5. donation
After that ask SS some questions to check the understanding of the text.
For example:
1. How are the streets, houses and Christmas trees decorated in the UK?
2. How do children get presents at Christmas?
3. What does the special dinner on Christmas day consist of?
4. What do people in the UK usually do on Boxing day?
Optional: Ask your students to imagine that they went to the UK for Christmas and then they
come back to their country and tell their friends about their experience. Set the role play with
one student desxcribing Christmas in the UK and the second students asking questions and

Aim: to practise speaking for fluency.
Procedure: Ask SS to discuss the questions.
7. Speaking (Activity 7) 7 mins
Aim: to practise speaking for fluency using the new vocabulary.
Procedure: SS work on their imagination making up a story according to the picture. If they
have difficulty, you can ask the following questions:
1. What can you see in the picture?
2. Where are the children?
3. What are they doing?
4. Is it on Christmas Eve or on Christmas day?
5. Why are the girls laughing?

8. Watching video vlogs (Activity 8) 7mins
Aim: to practise both listening and speaking skills.
Procedure: Ask their opinion about video vlogging, what they think might be in Christmas video
blog. Ask SS to watch the video made by a teenager and compare with their guesses.

As a homework you can ask to record a similar video.
9. Sum up 2-3mins
Praise SS for good work and give a delayed error correction feedback. Write down the
sentences, in which SS have made mistakes during the lesson. Ask SS to find the mistakes.
