Nursing Leadership and Management
This course deals with the application of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods of
developing nursing leaders and managers in the hospital. It also includes the ethico-moral and legal
aspects of health care and nursing practice and nurse’s responsibilities for personal and professional
growth.
General Objectives:
1. Utilize the nursing process in the care of individual, families, population group in the hospital.
2. Ensure a well-organized and accurate documentation and reporting system.
3. Demonstrate leadership and competence in the performance of responsibilities as a beginning
nurse practitioner in the hospital.
4. Observe bioethical principles, core values and standards of nursing care while practicing nursing.
5. Promote personal and professional growth for self and others.
Specific Objectives:
1. Demonstrate managerial and leadership skills in the care of group of clients.
2. Utilize the nursing process in the supervision of health care.
3. Demonstrate sound decision-making and collaborative functions.
4. Demonstrate qualities of an effective leader.
5. Establish valuable interpersonal relationship with co-workers and superiors.
6. Respect socio-cultural religious values of clients.
7. Recognize the importance of research in patient care management.
8. Understand the organizational structure and workflow of the hospital assigned.
9. Adhere to policies and protocols of the institution assigned.
10. Utilize effective time management in carrying out activities in the ward.
Duties and Responsibilities of Student Head Nurse:
1. Prepare and implement the daily management plan.
2. Make an advance patient loading.
3. Conduct pre and post conferences with the student staff nurses.
Pre-conference:
- Prayer
- Giving of patient assignment
- Checking of attendance, uniform and paraphernalia
- Discussion of the activities of the day (target time for checking of sample charting, oral drug
study, latest vital signs taking, closing of patient’s chart etc.,)
Post conference:
- Duty evaluation
- Collection of daily requirements
- Reminders for the next duty
- Closing prayer
4. Discuss patient assignment with the student staff nurses at the beginning of each shift.
5. Conduct nursing rounds as an effective controlling technique.
- Mention and introduce:
= patient’s name
= age
= chief complaints
= IVF (Bottle no., name of IVF, flow rate)
= special endorsement/s
= Student staff nurse assigned
(Assess the patient’s condition)
6. Supervise admission, discharge, and care rendered by student staff nurses.
7. Assist the student staff nurses in assessing individual patient needs and formulation of a plan of
care.
8. Assist the student staff nurses in documenting the effectiveness of the individualized care.
9. Check and countersign documentation or recording.
10. Demonstrate effective communication skills in eliciting data from the student staff nurses and
the client.
11. Confer with other members of the health team regarding patient care.
12. Make accurate referrals and coordinate with other departments on matters related to patient
care.
13. Supervise student staff nurses in carrying out doctor’s orders.
14. Sees that student staff nurses review physician’s orders and nursing care plans.
15. Revise the nursing care plan and FDAR charting of the student staff nurses as necessary.
16. Able to enumerate important details in the daily care of the client.
17. Involve the patient and family in evaluating the effectiveness of care given.
18. Perform actual endorsement to the next shift staff nurses.
19. Formulate teaching plan for structured health teachings:
Clinical conference
NCP conference
Nursing rounds
Patient conference and bedside health teaching
Watcher’s class
20. Participate actively in teaching-learning activities conducted in the clinical setting.
21. Impose deadlines set for the completion and submission of staff nursing requirements.
22. Enforce sanctions based on educational policies as outcome of misdemeanors/behaviors.
23. Demonstrate refinement in speech, manners, and keeps himself/herself neat and well-groomed
at all times.
24. Work harmoniously with the other members of the health team.
25. Observe punctuality in reporting to duty and promptness in submitting requirements.
