Tribo Assignment 4

This document discusses calculating constants for the Walther-ASTM equation to determine the effect of temperature on the viscosity of ISO VG 100 oil. [1] It provides the parameters of temperature range from 273K to 523K and kinematic viscosity values of 99.4 cSt at 40°C and 11.12 cSt at 100°C. [2] Using the Walther-ASTM equation and these viscosity values, it calculates the constants A and B as 9.056 and 3.508, respectively. [3] It then generates a table and graph of viscosity versus temperature between 273K to 523K based on the Walther-ASTM equation to show how viscosity decreases

1. For ISO VG 100 oil, calculate the constants A&B using Walther-ASTM
equation to determine the effect of temperature on viscosity of the oil as per the
parameters given below

Given parameters: -

a. Temperature range (273 – 523 K)

b. Kinematic viscosity: 99.4 cSt at 40 C and 11.12 cSt at 100 C.

Required

1. Show the relationship between viscosity (vertical) and temperature (horizontal) of ISO VG
100 oil using a graph and discuss the results as the temperature varies?
2. Using the Walter ASTM Equation find the constant values of A & B
3. Determine the relationship between viscosity and temperature and plot the graph using (𝑣)
Vs T graph between temperature range of 273-523K

Walther ASTM equation

The values of A & B are constant for each standard lubricant oil like, 𝐼𝑆𝑂 𝑉𝐺 100, 𝐼𝑆𝑂 𝑉𝐺 150
and 𝐼𝑆𝑂 𝑉𝐺 220 etc. So, using the values kinematic viscosity (𝑣) at 40℃ and at 100℃ we can
solve the above problem.

Walther ASTM equation: -𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝒗 + 𝟎. 𝟕) = 𝑨 − 𝑩 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝑻, the temperature is in kelvin.

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝒗 + 𝟎. 𝟕) = 𝑨 − 𝑩 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟒𝟎°𝑪 + 𝟐𝟕𝟑𝑲)

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝒗 + 𝟎. 𝟕) = 𝑨 − 𝑩 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟑𝟏𝟑𝑲), at 𝟒𝟎°𝑪 the values of 𝒗 = 𝟗𝟗. 𝟒𝒄𝑺𝒕

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟗𝟗. 𝟒𝒄𝑺𝒕 + 𝟎. 𝟕) = 𝑨 − 𝑩 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟑𝟏𝟑𝑲)

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟏𝟎𝟎. 𝟏) = 𝑨 − 𝑩 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟑𝟏𝟑𝑲)

𝐥𝐨𝐠 (𝟐. 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟒𝟑𝟒𝟏) = 𝑨 − 𝑩(𝟐. 𝟒𝟗𝟔)

𝟎. 𝟑𝟎𝟏𝟏𝟐𝟒 = 𝑨 − 𝑩(𝟐. 𝟒𝟗𝟔)……………………………….…. (1)

Then kinematic viscosity @ 100℃ is 𝒗 = 𝟏𝟏. 𝟏𝟐𝒄𝑺𝒕

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝒗 + 𝟎. 𝟕) = 𝑨 − 𝑩 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟏𝟎𝟎°𝑪 + 𝟐𝟕𝟑𝑲)

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟏𝟏. 𝟏𝟐 + 𝟎. 𝟕) = 𝑨 − 𝑩 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟑𝟕𝟑𝑲)

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟏𝟏. 𝟖𝟐) = 𝑨 − 𝑩 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟑𝟕𝟑𝑲)

𝐥𝐨𝐠 (𝟏. 𝟎𝟕𝟑) = 𝑨 − 𝑩(𝟐. 𝟓𝟕𝟐)

𝟎. 𝟎𝟑𝟒𝟓 = 𝑨 − 𝑩(𝟐. 𝟓𝟕𝟐)…………………………………………………… (2)

Using equation 1 and 2 we can solve for constant values A and B are:

𝑨 = 𝟗. 𝟎𝟓𝟔
𝑩 = 𝟑. 𝟓𝟎𝟖

Therefore, the ISO VG 100 the Walther ASTM equation becomes

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝒗 + 𝟎. 𝟕) = 𝟗. 𝟎𝟓𝟔 − 𝟑. 𝟓𝟎𝟖 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝑻

By extrapolation we can find the kinematic viscosity at different temperatures. The

following table lists the value of v at temperatures between the range of 273k to 523k

As shown from the graph oil viscosity decreases as the temperature increase means as temperature
weakens inter molecular bond in a lubricant.
