Lesson Plan in Mathematics 10

This lesson plan aims to teach students about tangent and secant lines of a circle. The lesson will begin with motivating activities to introduce the concepts. Students will then learn definitions of tangent lines, points of tangency, secant lines, and common tangents. Through group activities and discussion, students will practice drawing tangent and secant lines and learn postulates and theorems about their properties. To assess understanding, students will answer true/false questions and complete an assignment identifying tangent and secant lines in a figure and answering related questions.

LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10

I. OBJECTIVE
 At the end of a 60 minute period, the students will be able to:
1. define a tangent line, point of tangency, common tangent and secant line
to a circle.
2. comprehend the postulates and theorems on a tangent line and secant
line to a circle.
3. perform the activities and tasks given efficiently.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

TOPIC: “TANGENTS AND SECANTS OF A CIRCLE”
REFERENCE/S: MATHEMATICS: LEARNER’S MODULE, pages 182-186.
MATERIALS: Visual aids, activity sheets
SKILLS: Draw a tangent and secant lines to a circle to form an angle
VALUES: participation and cooperation, develop the essence of valuing the
topic being discussed for future references
III. PROCEDURE
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY

the circle formed.

 PRESENTATION
=TANGENT AND SECANT LINES OF A CIRCLE=
- Define and describe the following:
1. Tangent to a circle – a line which
passes through the circle at exactly 1
point.
2. Point of tangency – the point where the
line and the circle intersects
3. Secant to a circle – a line which passes
through the circle at exactly 2 points
4. Common tangent – a tangent line
which intersects two circle at the same
time. There are two types of common
tangents: (a) common interior tangent
and (b) common exterior tangent.
= ACTIVITY=
Direction: The class will be divided into 2
groups. Each group will have an envelope which
contains all the needed materials. Follow the
given instructions.

FOR GROUP 1
- Based on the definition of a tangent line of
a circle and the common tangent line of
two circles, how can you draw it according
to your own understanding?

FOR GROUP 2
- Based on the definition of a secant line of
a circle, how can you draw it according to
your own understanding?

 DISCUSSION PROPER
=POSTULATE ON TANGENT LINE=
- At a given point on a circle, one and only
one line can be drawn that is tangent to a
circle.
= THEOREMS ON TANGENT LINE=
1. If a line is tangent to a circle, then it is
perpendicular to the radius drawn to the
point of tangency.
2. If a line is perpendicular to the radius of a
circle at its endpoint that is on the circle,
then the line is tangent to the circle.
3. If two segments from the same exterior
point are tangent to a circle, then the two
segments are congruent.

 ABSTRACTION
1. Differentiate tangent lines from secant 1. A tangent line of a circle is a line

a circle at exactly 1 point. While
the secant of a circle is a line
that passes through the circle at
exactly 2 points.
2. If two segments from the same
2. Can you state at least one theorem on exterior point are tangent to a
tangent line that we have discussed? circle, then the two segments
are congruent.
( Answer depends on the student.)

 ANALYSIS
1. What do you think is/ are the 1. Yes, because it is an important
implication/s of learning the tangent and topic. It is also possible that this
secant lines of a circle? topic will be beneficial for future
purposes.
 APPLICATION
DIRECTION: Use the given figure, to answer the
questions that follow.

1. Which lines are tangent to the circle?

Why?
2. Which lines are secant to the circle? Why?
3. At what point does each secant intersect
the circle? How about the tangents?

IV. EVALUATION
DIRECTION: Tell whether the following is true or false.
1. A secant line to a circle is a line that passes through the circle at any
angle and at any given points on its arc.
2. If the point of tangency intersects at any given radius of a circle, then the
tangent line is perpendicular to the same radius.
3. If the endpoint of the two tangent lines intersects at the exterior of the
circle, then the measure of the lines are equal.
4. Common interior tangent line intersect on the center of the circle.
5. The point of tangency can be located anywhere inside the circle.

V. ASSIGNMENT
DIRECTION: Answer Activity 4 on page 188 from the learner’s module. Write
your answers on a ¼ piece of pad paper.
