PART III
READING
Read the articles and answer the questions.
ARTICLE I
1) Hi, I’m Peter. My friend Mehmet from Diyarbakır is going to France. He is really lucky, because France is a
beautiful country with many historical places. You can meet many interesting people when you travel in France.
But Mehmet has never been to another country before. He hasn’t even flown on an airplane, either. So he asked
me for advice. I hate airports, but I wanted to help Mehmet, so I gave him some advice.
2) Inside the airport, there is an area where you have to wait before you get on the plane. The security guards
watch this place so that it is safe. Before you can enter this area, you must take off your shoes and your belt.
You must also take your keys and your money out of your pockets. If you have a computer, you must take it out
of your bag. The police put your belt, shoes, bags, and computer into a machine. The machine looks for
dangerous things in your possessions. If the guards find something that they don’t like, then they ask you a lot
of questions. It’s really boring. After your things go through the machine, you can put your shoes and belt on
again. Then you take your other things and wait for the plane. You should bring a book or your phone to listen
to music, because it is boring and noisy inside the airport.
3) Mehmet also has a knife that he likes. It is his prized possession. I told that he should not take the knife. The
security guards will take it and throw it in the garbage. They might ask Mehmet if he is a terrorist, and they
might even tell Mehmet that he can’t get on the plane because he is dangerous!
4) Also, you can’t even buy a bottle of water outside the airport and then take the bottle into the airport. The
security guards will take the bottle of water and throw it in the garbage. The police are afraid that it’s not water
inside the bottle. It might be something dangerous that you could use to make a bomb. When you are inside the
airport, you can buy bottles of water, but they are very expensive. I think that the owners of the shops inside the
airport make a lot of money. You get really thirsty while you are waiting in the airport, but you have to buy the
9
expensive water in the airport. You have no choice. So I told Mehmet to bring a lot of money to buy things in
the airport.
5) Also, you can’t even take a lot of shampoo or toothpaste or soap onto the plane in your bags. The security
guards might think that there is something dangerous in the shampoo. So when you arrive in the foreign
country, you have to buy a lot of things. It’s very inconvenient. And things in France are a lot more expensive
than things in Turkey.
6) One of the most expensive things is cigarettes. Mehmet smokes a lot, and he wanted to take cigarettes to
France. I told him that he could only take 250 cigarettes to France. If he tries to take more and the police find
the cigarettes, then he will have to pay money for the cigarettes. If Mehmet tries to hide the cigarettes, and the
police find them, they will be very angry. The police can make problems for him.
7) I also told Mehmet to learn French. Although a lot of people speak English in France, most French people
don’t like to speak English. French people think the French language is very beautiful and they want other
people to learn and speak it.

D. They don’t want you to bring food into the airport, because they want the shops in the airport to make a lot

4. Why can’t you bring water into the place where you wait for the airplane?
A. The police are afraid that it isn’t water in the bottle, but something dangerous instead.
B. The police want the shops in the airport to make a lot of money.
C. The police get thirsty and take the water.
D. The water in Turkey is not good, and French people don’t want to become ill from Turkish water.

ARTICLE II
Alex Rawlings has been named the UK’s most multilingual student in a competition run by a dictionary
publisher. The student of German and Russian from London, who is only 20 years old, can speak 11 languages
fluently. In a video for the BBC News website, he demonstrated his skills by speaking in all of them, changing
quickly from one to another.
Rawlings said that winning the competition was “a bit of a shock”. He explained, “I saw the competition
advertised and I heard something about a free iPad. I never imagined that it would generate this amount of
media attention.”
As a child, Rawlings’ mother, who is half Greek, used to speak to him in English, Greek, and French, and he
often visited his family in Greece. He said that he has always been interested in languages. “My dad worked in
Japan for four years and I was always frustrated that I couldn’t speak to the kids because of the language
barrier.” After visiting the Netherlands at the age of 14 he decided to learn Dutch with CDs and books. “When I
went back I could talk to people. It was great.”
He taught himself many of the languages with “Teach Yourself” books, but also by watching films, listening to
music, and travelling to the countries themselves.
Of all the languages he speaks, Rawlings says that Russian, which he has been learning for a year and a half, is
the hardest. He said, “There seem to be more exceptions than rules!” He added, “I especially like Greek
because I think it’s beautiful and, because of my mother, I have a strong personal link to the country and to the
language.”
“Everyone should learn languages, especially if they travel abroad. If you make the effort to learn even the most
basic phrases wherever you go, it quickly shows the person you’re speaking to that you respect their culture.
Going around speaking English loudly and getting frustrated at people is insensitive and rude.”
The next language Rawlings hopes to learn is Arabic, but “only after I’ve finished my degree and got some
more time on my hands. For now I need to concentrate on my German and Russian, so I can prepare for my
finals.”
