The Strathmore Debate Society is pleased to invite Agaba Ian and his teammate Sigire
Adonia from Bishop Stuart University to the 9th edition of the Mashujaa Open Debate
Series from 29th to 30th April 2023 at Strathmore University in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mashujaa Open aims to equip students from across Africa with important advocacy and
critical thinking skills. Since the first leg of Mashujaa held in April 2021, we have seen
growth and development of speakers and adjudicators from different institutions and we wish
to continue laying foundations for a vibrant debate culture among university students.

Teams will get exposure to different perspectives and viewpoints, improved teamwork and
collaboration skills, greater awareness of current events, which can help them understand the
world around them and increased self-confidence and self-awareness as they learn to express
their ideas clearly, persuasively and confidently.

The tournament will use the British Parliamentary format. There will be five preliminary
debate rounds, all of which will be impromptu. We will break eight teams to the semi-finals
and there will be four finalists. Speakers can register as Open or Novice speakers.

Important to note is that only your university and Makerere University-Kampala shall send in
participants accompanied by their patrons.

Registration

The registration fee for each participant who is a debater, judge or observer is $500. The
registration fee covers accommodation, meals, local transportation, cost of venues, tabulation
software and trophies/medals /certificates.
