CE 359 Soil Mechanics Homework 2

This document contains instructions for a soil mechanics homework assignment. It includes two questions - the first asks students to calculate and plot heads at different points in a layered soil sample, and the second defines key soil mechanics terms and asks students to calculate total, porewater, and effective stresses at various depths. Students are to submit their answers by March 14th.

QUESTION 1
(a) Figure 1shows the layers of two different soils in a tube with different coefficients of
permeability. Water is supplied to maintain a constant head across the sample. If k1 = 4k2 ,
L1 = 4cm and L2 = 6cm
(i) Determine the elevation head, pressure head, total head and head loss at points A,B,C,D,E
(ii) Plot the variation of elevation, pressure and total head for points A-E with horizontal
distance

QUESTION 2
(a) Define the terms (i) total stress (ii) effective stress and (iii) porewater pressure?
(b) State two importance of effective stress in soil mechanics.
(c) Calculate the total stress, pore water pressure and effective stress at points A-E, as shown
in the Figure 2 below.
(d) If the water level in Figure 2 is at the ground level, what will be the effective stress at
points C – E.

GL A

γsat = 19 KN/m3 ; γdry = 17.5 KN/m3 5m

B
