‘Mastering a 21st Century Interview

An interview in today’s world can present a few more elements to think about in your
preparation process. Technology has had a significant impact on the recruiting and
interviewing process. Today's employers are most likely going to do a little further
digging than a basic background check to get to know you. In fact, 91 percent of
employers check out job candidates on social media before an interview.

'Prepare well to present well' still applies for interviews and perhaps even more so in
today's very competitive world. Your appearance, behaviour and communication all
need to be in top form to showcase your best self.

Even though a lot of the same interview tips hold true today as they did for the past
several decades, you need to be aware of what is going to give you the edge in the
21st Century.

Plumbers, electricians and builders are in huge demand in South

Africa

The demand for skilled artisans such as carpenters, toolmakers, fitters, joiners or
mechanics grown in South Africa, despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, there is a scarcity of individuals trained and qualified to meet that
demand. It is quite a cycle-resilient market, especially for those artisan-based
businesses that serve homeowners or other small businesses. In other words,
there will always be something broken in need of fixing or features that need an
upgrade. There has also been a definite upward trend in the home improvement
sector since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Learning a trade is one of the easiest entry points to self-employment and can
provide a stable income and decent livelihood with the right support. It’s important
to recognise that artisan-based businesses have different development needs to
other businesses, a crucial one being access to market. Trade and vocational
professions are also set to receive increased focus over the next five years, as part
of a new programme by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

vocational schools such as TVET instead of other tertiary institutions.
 send posters to schools and public areas where learners would usually be
present , so that learners will be able to see the information on a regular
basis without having to search for it.  This would keep vocational and trade
options at the forefront of learners’ minds when they are applying for tertiary
studies / looking for job opportunities. 
 approach various schools to offer learnerships and bursaries for TVET
colleges  They would then be able to offer these bursaries to learners but
only if they attend these colleges. This would mean that learners without
funds, who may not have considered studying would now apply to study a
trade.

when a boss / manager / Human Resources person / higher authority sits down
to highlight the problem and therefore want to change because they do value
their workplace and now have a better understanding of how their actions can
cause harm to their company however, they could also feel personally
attacked and purposefully bring the company’s name into disrepute out of
spite.
 Make the employee feel valued as someone took the time to invest in their
personal growth and position in the company however they may also feel
targeted or singled out  leading to resentment towards their job / company.
 Create a sense of fear of repercussions, which could cause employees to
quickly change their behaviour to a more professional / ethical approach 
working under a constant state of fear may cause employees to panic / feel
overly policed leading to silly mistakes as they were too scared to
concentrate properly
 Help motivate employees to work harder as they are able to find incentives /
encouragement to reach their targets, however, it could further demotivate
employees who may feel that they are trying their best and it simply isn’t
good enough / not recognised. 
