General Operations

Fire Alarm Control and Indication Panel Fire Alarm Indication Panel
These compact, control panels provide operator interactive control of your fire alarm and
fixed fire extinguishing system.

The Features for both Alarm Control & Indication Panels

and Fire Alarm Indication Panels
 A supervised single Automatic Detection zone fire alarm control.
 Programmable delay of up to 24 seconds is incorporated on engine shutdown function.
 Programmable timing features are incorporated, maintaining electrical output (Max 1 Amp) for 4 - 90
seconds on suppression system discharge.
 Fire Detector
A supervised input for Fire Detection, using any normaly open contact fire detector and 47KOhm EOL
resistor for supervision.
 Cylinder low pressure detector.
The alarm panel is connected to the Low pressure sensor with normaly closed contact. This circuit is
also supervised. If low pressure or a circuit fault occurs, the fault function will operate
 Test and Muting
To test in normal status, hold the test button for 6 seconds and release it before 10 seconds. This will
put the alarm through a test alarm function. The actuation output circuit will not be activated during
this test. This button also functions during an alarm to mute the sound in which case the mute light
will illuminate. The alarm can be re-activated by pressing again once only.
 Event data recording that may be viewed and printed to a PDF file as available.

The Features for the Fire Alarm Control and Indication Panel.
 Battery Power Supply
The POWER supply to the alarm is designed to operate nominally on 12 to 24vDC supply. It also
contains internal batteries to allow it to operate for up to 72 hours, independantly of the normal power
supply. The supply tolerance for operation is 9 to 30VDC for operation. There is internal regulated
charging for the internal batteries that is effective between 12 to 30VDC power input.
Actuation Switch -
 To actuate the system at the fire alarm, flip open the protective switch cover and push the spring
loaded toggle switch. The Alarm Manual Actuate function has a protective cover to prevent accidental
activation and will be fitted with a tamper seal.
 There are two fire alarm notification inputs. These can be connected to Fire Alarm Pressure switches,
Fire Detectors and Manual Call Points in any combination.
 When the alarm receives a fire detection or manual actuation, the sounder and LED light display will
respond. An actuation current will be sent to the actuation circuit ensuring the fire suppression agent
is released.
 To shutdown the engine as part of the fire fighting process, the alarm has “Voltage Free” contacts
provided in normally open or normally closed configuration. This also has a default 6 second delay or
can be re-programed from 0 to 24 seconds. This would normally be connected to the emergency
shutdown of the machine after consultation and agreement with the customer or OEM.
 A simple to connect cable with a serial plug matching the alarm panel is provided in 1, 3 or 6 metre
lengths. This is supplied with a 12 pin Deutsch plug and socket for connection by others. This allows
the various electrical functions to be wired to the Deutsch connector for easy connection and
maintenence.

Alarm Panel Monitor Indicators

 Green Power ON light iluminated – system okay and ready.
 Green Power ON light Flashing – system operating okay but on backup Battery. (Fire Alarm
Control and Indicating panel only)
 FIRE Red light – Fire Alarm.
 Discharge Light iluminated. Iluminates after fire alarm when system detects agent cylinder
pressure drop to confirm agent is being discharged.
 Isolated LED iluminated and all other indications off – Alarm is isolated.
 The Mute LED iluminates when the test button is used to mute the audible beep.
 FAULT indication function.

The Fire Alarm Panel uses flashing “Fault” LED and sounder beep codes to identify the type of alarm
fault. If more than one fault is present, flashing indication and beeping will occur sequentially.

No Fault Types Beeps + LED Fault

1 Fire Alarm input 2 1 Beep + 1 Flash (repeats)
2 Fire Alarm input 1 2 Beeps + 2 Flashes (repeats)
3 Cylinder Low Pressure Fault 3 Beeps + 3 Flashes (repeats)
4 Actuation Output Circuit 4 Beeps + 4 Flashes (repeats)
5 Backup Battery Disconnected 5 Beeps + 5 Flashes (repeats)
Low Voltage Power supply No fault codes shown, the battery
input light will illuminate red

Alarm table fault codes

Fault indication is not latching. This means that the fault indication will disappear when the fault is
repaired without resetting the alarm. The Fault Beep sound can be muted by pressing the “Mute”
button.

Fault code 5 will be encountered when a new panel is installed and the back up battery cable was not
connected to the socket or in the event the internal backup battery has run down after a prolonged vehicle
shutdown. To remove fault code 5 follow this procedure:
1. Disconnect the D-sub connector, loosen completely the 4 phillips head screws on the main case, carefully lift
the top cover off the bottom case.
2. Connect the internal battery cable to its power socket. Lift all the screws up, carefully align the D-sub female
connector with the hole in the lower case and gently press fit the lid to the case before securing the four
screws. Many faults will be present when the alarm is powered up internally, this is normal.
3. Reconnect the D-sub connector for the main power supply. If the system is fully charged and ready for
service the alarm will go “green light active” and all fault codes will no longer be present.

 Automatic Shut Down -

The panel incorporates normally open and normally closed voltage free contacts rated at 3 amps. These
can be utilised to notify emergency shutdown functions as required. The default factory setting is 6
seconds, however this can be programmed within a delay range of 0 – 24 seconds using the
AlarmWare.

 Risk Assessment
The design of fire systems and ongoing maintenance in compliance to AS5062, requires that a “Risk
Assessment” be undertaken in consultation with the Owner Operator of the plant. AS 5062 gives a
guide as to how this should be undertaken. Should you require assistance please consult with your
Distributor.

Alarm Isolation

Alarm Isolation may be carried out 2 ways.

1) Manually. At any time from normal condition, press and hold the test button for six (6) seconds, the
alarm will beep two (2) times; quickly press the test button three (3) times. The alarm will make a double
length beep and the Fault LED illuminates continuously all other LED’s are off. The alarm is now isolated.
When the alarm is isolated all functions are isolated including actuation fault and test functions. To return the
alarm to normal function repeat the procedure described above, the alarm will automatically reset to “green
light”.
2) Automatically after power shutdown. This can only be set from the IFES AlarmWare program. When the
alarm is set in automatic isolate mode, the alarm will isolate after the programmed delay, set in minutes. The
alarm will only return to normal when the power is reconnected. It cannot be manually reset (as above) from
an automatic shutdown. This setting is recommended for customers who want the alarm turned off when the
machine is turned off.

Overriding and Resetting Alarm Panel

OVERRIDING.
In some cases, customers require emergency shutdown override because the risk assessment has determined
that not being able to move a shutdown vehicle may be more dangerous than starting it. This is often the case
in underground mining environments. After a fire alarm, the shutdown contacts will latch. However, if the test
button is held down, the shutdown condition will temporarily unlatch for as long as the test button is held
down. This allows a temporary emergency restart but may require assistance of a person to perform this
function. When the button is released, the shutdown will re-activate and latch.

RESETTING.
There are two methods, in accordance with AS 5062, that the engine shutdown may be re-set.
Method 1 – Internal using a tool. Remove the face of the alarm by loosening the four plastic Phillips style
screws, and then press the internal re-set button. Inside there is a black reset button. One press of this will
reset the alarm.
Method 2 – External using a code. This is the same process to isolate the alarm. After a fire condition the alarm
will isolate initially, and it will then reset when the following sequence is applied twice. Press and hold the test
button for about 6 seconds. After you hear two (2) beeps, apply three (3) quick presses of the button. This
method will be preferred when the customer has a site policy of no internal access to the alarm panel.

With both methods, the alarm will return to normal mode assuming no fire alarm inputs are still present and all
active faults have been rectified.

Commissioning and Maintenance

Manual Alarm Self-Test

Manual Testing of the alarm should be carried out at all periodic inspections. This is done by pressing and
holding the “Test” button for more than 6 seconds and releasing before 10 seconds. The alarm will enter self-
test mode. During the self-test cycle, all functions will operate normally on the basis that the system has
detected fire or a manual actuation has occurred. During a test, the alarm will not send an actuation signal to
discharge the actuation system as this process is just an alarm test. The engine shutdown function will operate,
however it will not latch such that the internal reset must be accessed by the use of a tool. A simple press of
the test button will reset the alarm back to normal after a manual test.

Internal Battery Pack

The Nickel–metal hydride battery pack shall be replaced annually during the annual periodic test and
inspection. Simply unplug the old unit and replace and plug in the new unit. Dates of replacement must be
recorded in service records. See diagram below.
