INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS
Answer ALL questions

The marks for each question are indicated in square brackets [ ].

• You must handwrite your answers on paper. Once complete, your handwritten
work must be clearly scanned or photographed and then inserted into a word-
processed document for submission.

• Work must be submitted in a single word-processed file.

• You MUST show ALL of your working.

• An approved calculator may be used in the test.

• All work must be completed independently and without accessing unauthorised

materials. The penalty for Examination Misconduct is a mark of zero.

• Work must be submitted by the deadline provided. Your Study Centre can
provide guidance on submission of work but cannot comment on the contents of
the assessment.

Line 𝑙 goes through point M and is perpendicular to PQ.

(b) Find the equation of line 𝑙.

Give your answer in the form 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 + 𝑐 = 0 where 𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑐 are integers. [3]

Line 𝑙 crosses the 𝑥 − axis at point X and the 𝑦 − axis at point Y.

(c) Find the area of triangle YOX where O is the origin. [3]

Question 6

The variables 𝑃 and 𝑡 are connected by the formula 𝑃 = 𝑒 2𝑡 + 7𝑒 𝑡 .

(a) Find the value of 𝑃 when 𝑡 = ln 3. [2]

(b) Explain why 𝑃 can never be zero. [2]

= 12 [3]
12𝑚 ÷ 4𝑚 2

(b) Solve log 4 𝑥 + log 4 (𝑥 + 5) − log 4 (𝑥 2 − 25) = 2 (𝑥 > 5) [4]

Question 8

The 4th term of a geometric series is 6912 and the 7th term is 2916.

(a) Find the common ratio and the first term. Give the first term in full with no [5]
rounding off.

Question 9

(a) Use substitution to solve the equations 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 4

𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 12𝑥 − 16𝑦 + 66 = 0 [6]

(b) The equation 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 12𝑥 − 16𝑦 + 66 = 0 represents a circle.

Find its radius and the coordinates of its centre. [4]

All working must be shown.

Question 10

(a) Solve 40 tan 2𝜃 = 13 (0° < 𝜃 < 360°) [5]

(b) A

𝜙° NOT TO SCALE

4 cm
𝑥 cm

B
√22 cm C

Figure 1

Figure 1 shows the acute-angled triangle ABC with AB = 4 cm, AC = 𝑥 cm ,

BC = √22 cm and angle A = 𝜙°.

√39
You are given sin 𝜙 = .
8

𝑎
Without working out the size of 𝜙, find cos 𝜙 in the form where 𝑎 and 𝑏 are [5]
𝑏
integers, and hence find the value of 𝑥.

You must show your working. Just giving the answer, even the correct one,
will score no marks if sufficient working is not seen.
