Deviant Behavior and Criminal Behavior

Criminologists differentiate deviant behavior and criminal behavior in the following ways: 1) Deviant behavior violates social norms and standards, while criminal behavior violates formal criminal law. 2) Deviant behavior may or may not be criminal, whereas criminal behavior is always a punishable offense. 3) Examples of deviant behavior include underage marriage, prostitution, and public nudity, while examples of criminal behavior include murder and robbery. Deviant behavior is not necessarily punishable by law, whereas criminal behavior is defined and punishable under criminal law. The definitions of what constitutes deviant behavior can also differ between societies more than what is considered a crime.
