B1 - The Art Establishment

The document discusses two art-related events: 1) Banksy's artwork "Girl with Balloon" partially self-shredding at auction, creating the new work "Love is in the Bin". This stunt criticized the art market. 2) The auction of Andres Bonifacio's flag for 9.3 million pesos, which could allow private collectors to manipulate the artifact's narrative importance and recognition of national artists. Private ownership of historical artifacts can affect how national history is depicted when pieces are scattered.

The Art Establishment

The art work entitled “Girl with Balloon” by Banksy which is frame in an auction
event. It is sold for an amount of £860,000. But during the event, the frame suddenly started
shreding the piece of art. This shock the congregation. But during the process of shredding,
the process did not went as planned as half way in to the shredding process, the shredder
malfunction. So instead of shredded paper on the floor, the frames have a half to one-thrird
(1/3) of it inside the frame with the rest of the shreded portion dangling beneath it.
Unbeknownst to everyone, it is a somesort of prant that banksky usually employ in his art. In
the directors cut of the actual video, it is shown that the fram has been attached with a
makeshift shredder purposefully so that upon a click of a button, the art will go into the
shredder and shred the canvas and fall into a bin. It been a critiquw to the art market since the
way Banksy does these acts as a sort of joke or prant especially in events like an auction. In
the process of doing so, was able to produce another work of art being called Shred the Love.
In the process of destroying his work but was able to produce another one could increase
its value. This is because in the art industry, an object that is at first not considered a work
of art is destroyed and became another form that gives of another meaning could attract the
attention of many. In the case of Banksy work, I think the value of his panting would be
even more become popular since it begot a new form and meaning. Art that is destroyed is
still art. But I think this will not always be the case since some are destructions could lead
to vandalism and deminish the actual quality of the work. Art is still art even if it
destroyed. In the case of Banksy’s stunt, I think it affirms to the status quo since in
destroying his art, the process of his destruction leads to another form of art. It is like the
concept of change in medium can also change how art is portrayed.

I think private institutions such as private collectors greatly impact the narration of
how our historical narrative is depicted. In the process of selling historical artifact for
those enthisiats and private collectors affects how nation-building is depicted as the
artifact are scattered far and wide and, in the process, can be lost. Some, since privately
owned can be change in ownership since they are bought with a price. Another effect I
think of is that since they are scattered, may be lost, or owned by private owners, the
artifact’s value can be deminished or the the one owning the artifact can change the
narative or the importance of the object. This can be the case for the selling or auctioning
of the flag of Andres Bonifacio. By auctioning this historical artifact, they can present a
different narrative to counter or oppose the already known narrative. In other words, they
can manipulate the narrative to fit another agenda. This issue in terms of national artist is
that, those who where able to acquire this relic as part of their collection can be recognized
as national artist and the award-giving bodies will be recognizing them as the actual
owners of thos artifacts where in fact they are not. The recognition due is not given
rightfully.
