Lesson 4 Data Collection in Qualitative Research

This document provides information on data collection methods in qualitative research. It discusses structured, semi-structured, and unstructured interviews, focus group discussions, and observation techniques including written descriptions, video recording, photographs, and documentation. The purpose is to help readers choose appropriate qualitative research designs, sampling methods, and data collection procedures.

REVIEW: SAMPLING IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

In Panay Bukidnon, there was a practice of

secluding young girls. These girls were not
allowed to be seen by other people, do household
chores, or even play outside. They were called the
Binukots. They would simply stay in their room
and sing chants, epics, and other folk tales
passed on to them through oral tradition.
An anthropologist is interested in documenting
these chants, epcics, and songs. However, there
is only one living Binukot .

REVIEW: SAMPLING IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

Most people can hold their breath underwater for a

few seconds, some for a few minutes. But a group of
people called the Badjao can stay underwater for as
long as 13 minutes at depths of around 200 feet.
With this, a group of geneticists studied two Badjao
children to investigate what enables them to hold
their breath that long.

B. Homogenous sampling
C. Typical case sampling

A researcher wanted to understand the

experience of adjustment among people who
converted from one religion to another. For
this research he recruited six Catholics who
converted to other religions: two converted to
Iglesia ni Cristo, two converted to Islam, and
two converted to Hinduism. What sampling
technique did he employ?
A. Critical case sampling
B. Extreme or deviant case sampling
C. Maximum variation sampling
REVIEW: SAMPLING IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

A social worker wants to do a case study on teenage

pregnancy. She is interested in studying the case of
the youngest teenage mothers. The Civil Registry
Statistics of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)
has revealed two registered live births from girls as
young as 10 years old from the National Capital
Region (NCR) and Region 4-A (Calabarzon), both of
which have a relatively high population.

A. Extreme or deviant case sampling

B. Maximum variation sampling
C. Typical case sampling
REVIEW: SAMPLING IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

Facebook wanted to make it easier for people to

do live online selling. Because of this, a market
researcher was hired to conduct a focus group
discussion. She recruited ten FB live online
sellers to get their opinions on how FB could
improve its system for their business. All of
participants were women (ages 20-40 years
old). They had been selling clothes and
accessories online for at least a year. What
sampling technique did the researcher use?

A. Homogenous sampling B. Typical Sampling C. Critical sampling

METHODS
OF
DATA COLLECTION
IN
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
Remember that in qualitative research data collection
1. Involves direct interaction with individuals
on one-on-one or in a group setting.
2. Is time-consuming
3. Is collected from smaller sample sizes
4. Include richness of data and deeper insight
into the phenomena under study
Structured interview

Semi-structured interview
1. INTERVIEWS
Unstructured interview
A. This happens when the
researcher prepared and
Structured interview
organized questions that
the respondents will answer.
The researcher does not Semi-structured interview
ask beyond what is written
in the interview sheet but Unstructured interview
could only make
clarification.
STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS
B. This occurs when the researcher
prepares an outline of the topics Structured interview
that he needs to ask from the
interviewee in a spontaneous and
conversation-like manner. In this Semi-structured interview
kind of interview, the researcher
should be knowledgeable about
Unstructured interview
the topic and skilled in asking
probing questions.
UNSTRUCTURED INTERVIEWS
C. This is when the
Structured interview
researcher prepares a
specific set of questions
but could ask follow-up Semi-structured interview
questions to the
respondents for them to Unstructured interview
elaborate their answers.
SEMI-STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS

participants to agree or

2. Focus Group Discussion
- It should consist of 6-10 people.

- Several focus groups should be run in any

research project.

- Members of each group should have

something in common.
3. OBSERVATIONS
Not all qualitative data can be
collected through interaction
with participants. Sometimes
participants do not do what
they say in interviews. In this
case, observing them is more
reliable.
1. Naturalistic
observation. The
researcher observes
the subjects as an
outside observer.

1. Participative
observation. The
researcher is required
to be involved in the
