Pedro Nunes was a 16th century Portuguese mathematician, astronomer, physician, and philosopher born in 1502 in Alcácer do Sal, Portugal. He studied medicine, arts, and mathematics and had occupations as a mathematician, geographer, astronomer, cosmographer, physician, philosopher, and cartographer. He published influential works on spherical geometry and astronomy and made important contributions to navigation and cartography that supported Portuguese maritime exploration and discoveries. He died in 1578 in Coimbra, Portugal at age 76.
