Summary
Hiiii ! This is a long fic charting Sirius’ life basically, it will end in the goblet of fire time
period and then after that it goes back to the war where something super fun happens, (reg
doesn’t turn spy or anything never …) as the fic goes on I will probably add to the tags but
this is only chapter one so bare with me.
TW ! As I said in the tags, they all suffer with mh issues bc I wanna bring attention to the
fact they existed in the 70s. In this first chapter Sirius and reg (before he’s trans tho so
antila) are suffering with ed like thoughts and it goes into detail about portion sizes as well
Sirius’ mother being a sexist bitch /:/ Please don’t read if this will upset you I just hc them
both like this.
This fic will be super fluffy but also explore dark themes and mindsets so please don’t read
it if that is likely to upset you.
You are loved and beautiful and I am so proud of you for being here. If anyone needs to
reach out, you can always leave a comment <3
Now that that’s out of the way enjoy ! I’m really excited about this fic
Notes
Sirius black was awake, he was wide awake, blood buzzing with excitement, as if he could feel the
magic fizzing beneath his skin. Because tomorrow, Sirius black was going to Hogwarts.
He had received his Hogwarts letter a little over a month ago and was beyond ecstatic, he had
believe he’d be going to Durmstrang. Sirius shuddered at the thought, he had heard tales of
Hogwarts when he was little, his earliest memory was when he was at the tiny age of 4, when
andromeda had visited after her second year with bright eyes and terrific tales of the fun her and
Bella were having at Hogwarts.
Andromeda was his favourite cousin, when they had been younger, Sirius would spend most of his
time with andromeda, she would laugh with him and roll her eyes when their parents began talking
about politics and was always kind to him and antila. On the other hand, cissy and Bella were
slightly more distant, nodding in agreement with their parents ludicrous ideas.
Sirius hadn’t seen his cousin in two years now, his heart ached a little every time he thought about
it.
On that fateful day Sirius had been playing chess with Antila when his aunt druella and uncle
Cygnus had practically banged the door to their manor open, shouting at the top of their voices.
Sirius’ mother had rushed down the stairs at once, exclaiming the audacity she had to shout in her
house and asking what her intentions were.
Sirius had listened intently along with Antila behind the door of the library and caught the words,
“that filthy mudblood has turned my daughter into a depraved traitor !” before his aunt and uncle
had been whisked away into their fathers soundproof study and he and Antila had been unable to
hear the continued argument.
As soon as his relatives had left the house Sirius had sent a desperate message by owl to andi and
she had owled him back within the next hour. Andromeda had done the worst thing she could do in
their families eyes. She had married a muggle born, Ted Tonks and had been disowned from the
family because of her ‘traitorous’ actions.
Sirius had written back, expressing his support and happiness for her but also his sadness that he
was unlikely to see her, she expressed her gratitude to his support and promised to stay in touch
regularly.
It was during the evening when Sirius had announced the news to his parents, he had just finished
supper and was expected to go straight to bed, he didn’t follow the rules as much as antila did.
With his letter clutched tight in his fist, Sirius had entered the living room, it would be a warm cosy
place, with lush green accents and dark furniture, but the chill of his mother and fathers presence
had settled over it like a blanket of frost, as a result it was rather chilling instead of cosy.
His mother sat on the couch, long finger nails tapping on a glass of red wine, his father sat on his
chair, a glass of fire whisky clutched in his fist as he read the daily profit. His mother glanced up
upon noticing his entry to the room, she eyed him disdainfully,
“Sirius ? What is the meaning of this ? you’re supposed to be in bed. Antila has already went up”
she said, his father didn’t spare him a glance.
“Yes mother” Sirius replied politely, gritting his teeth, “I just had something to show you and
father” he said, his knuckles were turning white from how hard he had the letter clutched in his fist.
“My Hogwarts letter arrived today” he blurted out, his father looked up from the paper, eyeing him
suspiciously as if he thought he was joking.
Sirius jutted his chin out in a slightly defiant manner and stepped forward hesitantly, handing his
mother the letter, willing his hands not to shake. Walburga placed her wine on the glass table and
reached out a hand to take Sirius’ letter from him. Her icy eyes scanned the paper, lips pressed into
a thin line. After a moment she passed it back to him, expression melting the slightest bit, features
becoming a little less sharp.
“Very well. Thank you Sirius” she said, Sirius nodded, his father stood from his chair, placing his
copy of the daily profit on his seat, Sirius stood tall, allowing his posture to straighten up, his body
to remain still, his father walked towards him, placing a rough hand on his shoulder and having the
tiniest of smiles twist his features,
“well done Sirius, Hogwarts is a fine school, I trust you will grow into a fine young wizard” he
said, squeezing his shoulder lightly, Sirius felt a small flutter of pride flow through him, he allowed
himself to smile just the tiniest bit.
“Yes father” he replied. Maybe, he would finally make his parents proud. He raised his head and
faced his mother again, trying to decide what to do with the flutter of pride in his chest.
“Where will we be ordering my school things from mother ?” He asked, trying to keep his posture
as straight as possible and willing his voice not to shake,
She turned her face to him, features sharp, “i will be ordering your necessary school items from
knockturn alley and our personal seamstress will fit you for your robes. If you can behave yourself
before your departure I will allow Maria to accompany you.” she responded coldly,
Sirius nodded, allowing himself to smile just the tiniest bit, “goodnight Mother, Father” his mother
smiled, actually smiled ! It was small and sharp and it did nothing to soften her features, but it was
proud, undeniably it was proud. “Good night Sirius” his Mother replied, his father inclined his
head to him, wearing the same hard, yet proud smile his mother was.
He raised his head as he left, feeling better then he had in a long time, hopeful even, prideful.
Maybe .. he would finally make his parents proud of him.
That night Sirius had snuck into his little sisters room, heart hammering in anticipation as he
quietly opened her door, “anti” he whispered, a special nickname he had made for her, “Sirius ?”
She asked, Sirius grinned, clambering into bed beside her, his Hogwarts letter clutched in his hand.
“I’m going to Hogwarts Antila !” He exclaimed excitedly, showing her the letter and trying
desperately not to be too loud,
“Wow” she breathed, as Sirius handed her the letter, she gazed at it with bright eyes and clutched it
tight as if it was something precious. When she handed it back to him she was biting her lip, brows
furrowed and eyes slightly glassy.
“What’s wrong ?” Sirius asked, frowning at her sudden, sad expression, she smiled tightly and
shook her head, Sirius simply raised his eyebrows and she sighed heavily, fingers twirling around
strands of her hair,
“It’s just going to be .. different, without having you around” she said quietly, her voice etched in
sadness.
Sirius wasn’t sure how to respond to that, he felt a painful ache in his chest as he thought for the
first time that he wouldn’t be seeing Antila for those first few months. “I’ll write to you every day !
Mothers letting me take Maria !”he smiled, a little forced. Maria, the black family’s pet owl was
allowed to accompany him to Hogwarts.
“Thanks Siri. But .. what if mother gets angry .. ?” she asked, hugging her pillow close to her chest,
Sirius sighed, rapping her up in a warm hug which she relaxed into after a minute.
“I’ll be back before you know it. Just .. try to be good, your an angel compared to me so don’t
worry” he said, she laughed and seemed to feel better after that. They stayed up for a while after
that, whispering excitedly as Sirius told her everything he had learned about Hogwarts from the
few books stored in the family library.
He had read Hogwarts a history too many times to count and was fascinated to hear about secret
passages and towering turrets and endless secrets the school held. After an hour they were giggling
and shushing each other before Sirius quietly crept back to his room, confident he had reassured his
little sister.
There was unresolved tension between them for the following month, something nagging and
creeping yet painful.
He made sure to spend time antila, helping her with her homeschool lessons and playing chess with
her, reading her books about Hogwarts or magical beasts and subjects that she found interesting.
He snuck into her bedroom at nighttime, often bringing her a sandwich or a citrus orange (her
favourite fruit) when he realised she hadn’t eaten much at dinner. She seemed much more
comfortable eating around him.
Regardless, antila seemed withdrawn and sad and Sirius knew that it was because as the weeks
slipped past them, his departure to Hogwarts drew ever closer. Part of Sirius wanted to stay, wanted
to make sure that antila would be alright, he couldn’t be sure shed be fine when he was finally
gone. Who would be left to protect her ?
But a bigger part of him, perhaps the most selfish part, wanted so badly to get to Hogwarts, he was
fascinated by the stories he had heard about the castle and the prospect off making friends with
boys his own age excited him.
So he did his best to keep his sister happy, ignoring the kick of guilt that came with his inevitable
excitement. Even with his departure looming closer day after day, taking a tiny piece out of him
and his sister a it drew ever closer.
The morning of his leave at breakfast Sirius behaved with the “decorum” that was expected off
him, he didn’t like meals, hated them in fact. He ate quite little at meal times, always feeling
uncomfortable with his parents’ watchful eyes on him at all times. He never usually had anything
more then one slice of toast at breakfast, a few mouthfuls of his bread and stew at lunch and a
couple bites of his potatoes and steak at dinner.
He ate enough in between meal times though, always sneaking back into the kitchen to grab
something that would fill his stomach, usually a piece of fruit or a hurriedly made sandwich which
he could eat in the peace and quiet off his own room without eyes judging him.
As the woman in the house hold Antila was expected to act with politeness and courtesy at all
times, sitting up straight, glaring at the people their mother deemed inappropriate, clasping her
hands together, keeping any and all opinions she had to herself. She was only supposed to speak
when spoken to, let their mother and father lead her in life and prioritise her charm into every
action she made to be the perfect daughter their parents wanted.
Sirius felt a hot, blistering rage in the pit of his stomach as he watched his sister change everything
about herself just to please their parents. She was reprimanded on how much she ate at dinner, she
used to love meal times and Sirius tried to make it fun for her, subtly play fighting during supper
and swiping whipped cream on her nose when they were served dessert which always made her
giggle.
Now, she only ever served herself tiny portions, eating with her mouth closed, daintily slicing her
food and dabbing at her mouth afterwards, excusing herself after only a few measly bites.
She was expected to keep her mouth shut when adults were talking, even being told a few years
ago by their parents that when Sirius told her to do something she was expected to obey him. It
made him feel sick. He had privately told her later that day that he didn’t think he was any better
then her and she didn’t need to “obey” anything he said unless it was something important.
That was another thing, the way she laughed. Her parents, particularly their mother had scolded her
for it, Antila’s laugh used to be loud and bright and unashamed, now she laughed quietly, a
breathless sort of thing that was always forced and had no real happiness behind it.
Their mother also criticised the way she chose to dress, Antila used to tie her hair up, wear the sort
of robes their father was accustomed to, or else wear suits when their mother threw her extravagant
parties. Sirius didn’t mind as long as she felt comfortable.
Sirius had quickly done something to redirect her anger towards him before the wand came out,
smashed some old family heirloom, threw his plate of food across the table in an unexplained rage
while his relatives were there. His legs had been sore for days.
Eventually, Antila had obeyed their parents, she brushed her long black hair out into semi curly
waves, the same hair that Sirius, their mother, andromeda and Bellatrix had inherited, marrying
your relatives didn’t exactly leave room for original looks.
She wore the same dress up robes in the style their mother did, she wore high heels, forced her
laugh into something light and breathy, spoke quietly and courteously, never voiced her opinion,
sat up straight, shut her mouth when men were talking, obeyed their parents without batting an eye,
portioned herself tiny meals at dinner and never displayed an ounce of emotion whenever their
parents were present.
Sirius couldn’t stand to watch it. It made him feel sick to his stomach.
As he entered the dining hall for breakfast next day, a large rectangular table set with all sorts of
breakfast items, toast, scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, fruit and yoghurt, tea and black coffee a
water flask and some different types of oatmeal which his father was rather accustomed to, along
with the rest of the food lay out, he acted polite and kept his posture straight, not wanting to anger
his parents, a tiny part of him even hoping to please them.
He had also made sure to take pride in his appearance, wearing his special tailored wizard robes his
mother had purchased from knockturn alley for his tenth birthday, taking time to style his hair in
the way his mother approved off, his dark corkscrew curls farming his face.
He had taken the time the night previous to pack his stuff too, all his wizards robes, some more
casual clothes for the weekends at Hogwarts, his wand, all his spell books and cauldrons for
potions and he had put Maria safely in her cage that morning.
The room had a rather gloomy feel to it, lined with family portraits and dark green, patterned
wallpaper, the table itself was black, as was the kitchen behind it where kreacher was currently
busying himself making Walburga her yoghurt and pomegranate. An “easy, light breakfast” as she
called it. Walburga had dressed up, wearing a set of dark green dress robes, some ugly rings and
she had pinned her hair up, accentuating her already sharp features.
“Hey anti” he smiled at his sister, taking a seat beside her. She smiled back at him and he glanced
down at her plate, she only had a few pieces of fruit and some plain yogurt beside it. Sirius knew
she loved bacon and eggs, she enjoyed it in a sandwich. If she ever ate it.
“Hey anti, want some bacon ?” He asked cheerily, taking the plate of bacon and putting a few
slices on his own plate along with some sausages and a few pieces of toast, he’d sneak it up to his
room later, before he left.
Antila was eyeing his plate with a hungry look and he felt a painful ache in his gut as he realised
just how badly she wanted it.
She opened her mouth to speak but Walburga got there before any sound had even left her lips,
“Sirius !” She reprimanded, voice pitched and cold as ice, her cup off coffee shook in her hand,
“Antila can choose what she eats without your despicable influence. A proper lady doesn’t eat so
much at mealtimes” she scolded, Sirius felt his hands ball into fists, his teeth gritting behind the
thin line that was his lips as he turned to his sister, her eyes were shining and it was so clear she
was forcing her expression not to be sad.
Sirius opened his mouth, ready to scream obscenities at his mother, consequences be damned, but
Antila softly placed a hand on his arm shaking her head, small and silent, communicating to him
without words not to anger their mother.
Sirius bit his tongue but reasoned with himself that he would sneak some food up to his sister later,
before he left. He pored them both a glass of water, careful not to spill it and antila shot him a
grateful smile.
He took a sip and objected to change the subject since his mother was still glaring at him, “Mother”
he asked, hating himself as he straightened his posture, “what time do we leave ?”
“By the next hour” she responded, icily, “i trust you have everything packed” she said, eyeing him
disdainfully,
Sirius raised his chin in a slightly defiant manner, voice cold and hard like his fathers as he
responded, “yes, my trunk is packed and Maria’s in her cage”
“Mother may we be excused ?” Antila asked, keeping her posture straight like he did, Sirius knew
her too well not to notice the fear in her eyes though.
“Very well” their mother responded, Sirius scraped his chair back as antila did, taking the
opportunity to fill a few napkins with food, “antila” his Mother said before they had a chance to
leave,
“Yes mother” antila responded, Sirius hated the way she jutted her chin out, raised her head, kept
her posture perfect, he could see her hands twisting together anxiously under the table.
“You will not be accompanying Sirius and i to the station, you have school work to complete, am i
understood ?”
Sirius couldn’t trap the words behind his teeth this time, he couldn’t bare the look in his sisters
eyes, the way her lip trembled like she was trying not to cry,
“But mother-“ he tried to protest, she shut him up with a single glare and Sirius hated the way he
fell silent from the one look,
“Am I understood ?” She repeated, voice rising, antila quickly nodded and Sirius followed suit, “i
shall send kreacher to fetch you once it is time to leave” she said to Sirius, he nodded and took
Antila’s hand, quickly dashing through the dark, portrait lined halls and up the gloomy spiralling
staircase to his room.
“I’m sorry anti” he sighed, she shook her head, plastering on a shaky smile, black waves fanning
around her face,
“It’s fine” she said. Sirius let the silence over take them before plastering a grin back into his face
and unwrapping his napkins full of food, taking out a plate from the cupboard he had nicked at
their dinner set last night. “Want a sandwich ?” He asked, taking some pieces of toast and
constructing a bacon and egg sandwich for her.
Antila bit her lip hesitantly, eyeing the plate of food he was making, “mother says I shouldn’t” she
said quietly,
Sirius frowned and began constructing a sausage and bacon sandwich for himself, hoping to put
antila at ease a bit, “well i don’t mind, mother wont know” he smiled, passing the plate to her, she
gave a small smile and took a bite and Sirius, glad that his sister was now eating what she wanted,
dug into his own breakfast happily.
They sat on his bed and ate in companionable silence, once they were finished around twenty
minutes later, Sirius asked if they should play a game of chess, his sisters eyes lit up and they spent
the next half an hour playing, Sirius could have won a few times but he didn’t because antila got so
excited when she won.
“Checkmate !” She cried happily, as her chess piece swung it’s chair at Sirius’ and knocked his
into pieces,
“Yeah yea, don’t get cocky anti” he grinned,
“Can’t handle that I’m better than you ?” She challenged, swishing her dark waves over her
shoulders with a mischievous glint in her eye,
Sirius grinned and was about to respond when kreacher entered the room, he quickly hid the plate
and napkins, “mistress black says it is time to leave young master black” he said in his strange
croaky voice, he left soon after.
Sirius turned to antila, feeling as if his heart was cracking in his chest at he prospect of leaving his
sister, he stood from his bed as she did and enveloped her in a tight hug, heart hammering as he
heard the sharp gasps she was taking in, she was trying not to cry.
“Okay” she whispered, head buried in his chest, Sirius hugged her tighter, he could hear his mother
making her way up the stairs, heeled boots clicking on the staircase, he didn’t want to let go of his
sister.
The door creaked open and Sirius quickly jumped apart from antila and perfected his posture, she
did the same.
“Time to go Sirius” his mother said, Sirius nodded and quickly grabbed his trunk and Maria who
was still safely in her cage, “you are to stay here and study with your father antila” Walburga said
coldly, antila nodded silently, eyes still shimmering, Sirius shot her one last shaky smile which she
returned and Sirius exited his room, not sure if he would be able to bare that tearful look any
longer.
He followed his mother swiftly and silently down the gloomy spiral staircase, Kreacher in front of
him, and quickly exited through their manor door, next second, his mother had a strong grip on his
arm, nails digging through his robes and into his skin.
With a sickening lurch he was then whizzing through time and space, his vision blurring, trunk and
cage heavy at his side and his heart aching for the piece of himself he’d left behind.

Chapter Notes
Sirius came back from the side along apparition gasping and spluttering, his mother hadn’t exactly
given him enough warning. When he opened his eyes he was surrounded by endless crowds of
chattering people, his mother gripped his arm and fixed him with a sharp look as Kreacher took the
cage containing Maria and his trunk.
Sirius was grateful for that, it was bloody heavy. “Follow my lead Sirius” his. Mother said
pristinely, dragging him forward with her nails still digging past the fine cloth of his robes and into
his skin.
They were headed towards the barrier between platform nine and ten, Sirius knew from his
extensive reading of all things relating to Hogwarts that what appeared to be solid metal was
actually the secret passage way that lead to platform nine and three quarters where the Hogwarts
express would now be set to leave.
Sirius kicked up speed, giddy with excitement, heart hammering with nervous energy as he felt the
strange sensation of finally slipping between platform nine and ten and the metal barrier and on to
platform nine and three quarters.
He opened his eyed and couldn’t help the delighted grin that spread across his face as he adjusted
to the surroundings. There were hundreds of children crowding the station, children his age ! And
they were smiling and chattering, hugging crying parents goodbye as they boarded onto the bright
scarlet train billowing smoke out into the station. Sirius had very little hope his mother and he
would share a similar tearful goodbye.
He heard shouting then which seemed unusual and his eyes were drawn to a red haired girl and a
brunette, yelling at each other, the red headed girl was crying and Sirius realised his mother was
eyeing her disdainfully. “Filthy mud bloods” she hissed, voice disgusted, Sirius turned away,
feeling ashamed at his mother’s cruelty.
“Now Sirius” she said sharply, turning to him, Sirius resisted the urge to roll his eyes, preparing
himself for the same boring speech about honour and dignity and upholding his noble title and
blah blah blah, all the same rubbish he had heard a million times before.
“As the heir to our noble house i expect you to act with honour and dignity at all times, you are an
example to Antila and you will present yourself in the manner you are expected to which you father
and i have instilled in you. Your cousin Narcissa, has kindly offered to accompany you on the train
journey to Hogwarts. I’m sure your won’t disappoint us”.
His mother said, all with a sharp pristine tilt to her words, Sirius knew how to recognise the threat
that lay underneath by now. He resisted the urge to protest, he didn’t want to sit with Narcissa !
He’d had quite enough of her company his whole bloody childhood, besides, he wanted to make
friends with kids his own age ! Was that so much to ask ?
But he plastered on a smile which made him cringe internally, far too reminiscent of his fathers,
and perfected his posture while raising his head. “Yes mother, understood” he responded, she gave
a curt nod and turned on the spot, Kreacher at her side and with a CRACK almost as sharp as her
words his mother left the platform.
Sirius took in a breath and set his sights ahead of him, dragging his heavy luggage and his owl cage
along with him and finally boarding the Hogwarts express which made his spirits lift slightly.
“Sirius !” He heard a voice softer than his mothers but still just as irritating call. He sighed and
turned to his cousin who was standing with her hands on her hips and an annoyed expression,
blonde bleach hair falling in a fringe above her chipped ice eyes. “Come along Sirius, you’re
keeping all my friends waiting !” She said angrily.
Sirius shook his head, stifling his own burst of irritation as he smiled at his cousin, “don’t keep
them waiting any longer because I’m not sitting with you” he grinned.
Narcissa blanched, expression settling into s scowl, “but you mother said your to sit with me” she
retorted,
Narcissa tutted, rapping a hand around his arm and tugging him harshly towards her, her voice was
a spiteful whisper as she hissed, “when your mother finds out i am not responsible for your
injury’s” with that, she turned on her heel and stomped off down the corridor.
Sirius stood stunned for a second, feeling a bit like he had just been punched in the gut, he didn’t
know that Narcissa knew about, well .. that. He shook his head, ridding himself of those thoughts,
he wanted to make friends and he was bloody well going to.
Just as soon as he figured out how to haul this bloody trunk into a carriage.
He blew out a breath and ran a hand through his hair and took the trunk handle in one hand while
hooking Maria’s cage onto to two of his fingers, he was just considering what carriage to go in
when he felt a light tap on his shoulder.
He spun around, nearly dropping his luggage and came face to face with a boy around his own age.
He had a mess of dark hair and a fringe that fell just above his similar colour eyes which were
framed in round spectacles. His skin was dark and his smile bright, sincere, features the kindest
Sirius had ever seen, he found himself mirroring the boys smile.
“Need a hand mate ?” He asked, clapping Sirius on the shoulder and taking the handle of his trunk.
“Yeah, thanks” Sirius smiled, brushing his sweaty hair out of his eyes and following the boy down
the corridor. He walked a little further down and stopped outside a carriage,
“The rest are full so we’ll have to go in here” he said, opening the door to the carriage, “after you
good sir” he grinned, accentuating his voice into a posh tone Sirius was sure his mother would
approve off if it wasn’t so sarcastic.
“Why thank you mr ..” Sirius let the word hang in the air as the boy walked in after him, he shoved
his trunk up onto the rack with a strength that Sirius admired him and then turned to him, holding
out a hand,
“Potter, James potter” he smiled, “and you are ?” He grinned as if he and Sirius were in a
particularly important work meeting,
“Black, Sirius black” Sirius smiled, taking his hand to shake it. Sirius expected him to judge him
on his last name but he didn’t, his smile remained genuine as he enthusiastically shook his hand,
“The feeling is mutual mr potter” Sirius laughed, he took a seat on the open spot and James sat
beside the other person in the carriage.
With a funny jolt, Sirius realised she was the girl he had seen on the platform, the girl who had
been arguing with the brunette.
“Hi” James smiled jovially to the girl beside him, she didn’t answer, head resting in her cheek as
she stared out the window, Sirius could see tears tracking down her cheeks and realised with a
horrible lurch she was crying.
“Er .. James” Sirius said, James turned to him and he meaningfully inclined his head towards her,
willing James to realise, his eyed widened when he did and he made a motion of zipping his mouth
shut and throwing away the key, Sirius nodded and they silently decided to leave her be, as James
moved to sit beside him. She didn’t seem to want to talk to anyone.
James cleverly struck up a conversation with Sirius about how excited he was to get to Hogwarts
and Sirius listened with rapt attention as he explained about the cosy common rooms and towering
turrets and moving staircases. Sirius’ heart kicked in his chest as he heard the low, rumbling
sounds of the train chugging out of the station.
He had read about most of what he was saying in the various books in the library but James had a
way of making it seem all the more exciting with his bright, earnest eyes and sincere smile.
Some minutes into their conversation the compartment door slid open and another boy walked in,
Sirius decided to ignore him as he went over to the girl, she had calmed down a bit now and was no
longer crying, he was busy conversing with James.
“You’d better be in Slytherin” Sirius heard the boy say not long after, he had only realised because
of the result that came from his words. James scrunched up his nose in disagreement and said,
“Slytherin ?” As he turned to the boy,
“Who wants to be in Slytherin ? I think id leave, wouldn’t you ?” He asked Sirius, without meaning
to, he slouched lower in his seat and let his face settle into a frown unintentionally,
James grinned, unperturbed by his abrupt change of tone, “blimey, And i thought you seemed
alright !” he said jokingly,
Sirius felt his lips quirk up again and sat up a bit straighter as he gave a nonchalant shrug, “maybe
ill break the tradition. Where are you heading, if you’ve got the choice ?” He asked,
James grinned, slashing an imaginary sword through the air as he responded, “Gryffindor ! Where
dwell the brave at heart. Like my dad” he explained.
This made the boy in the corner snort disdainfully and the girl turned to him with a worrying look
as James rounded on him, eyes blazing,
The boy snorted again and muttered, “no. If you’d rather be brawny then brainy”
Sirius felt anger boiling in his blood, this greasy kid reminded him a lot of his parents and he
wanted to come to Hogwarts to get away from those sorts of ludicrous opinions.
The sarcastic quip had left his mouth before he could stop it and he responded boldly, “where are
you hoping to go ? Seen as your neither ?” He asked, raising a challenging brow in his direction
and smirking.
James roared with laughter and Sirius found himself laughing with him, “come on Severus, lets
find another compartment” The girl said primly, walking out of the carriage with her head held
high, Sirius and james laughed again, imitating her prim voice. The boy- severus, attempted to
follow her out with dignity but James stuck his leg out and tripped him up.
He laughed and called out to him as the compartment door slam shut “see you snivellus !” Sirius
laughed with him, he thought that the greasy little kid had deserved it after how rude he had been.
James and Sirius spent the next few minutes discussing what a prat the oily kid had been until the
compartment door slid open again and one boy walked in, the other stood nervously outside the
carriage.
Sirius felt his stomach do some sort of weird jump as he looked at the boy who had nervously
walked into the carriage.
His skin was warm, not quite as dark as James’, but it was evidence he spent time in the sun, his
face was dotted with freckles and Sirius could see a strange, whitish line on one cheek, his robes
weren’t as nice as his, possibly second hand ones.
Sirius was more drawn to his eyes though, they were unlike any colour he had ever seen, a soft
chocolate brown melting into a wild, wondrous green, colliding together to form a soft, mysterious
hazel.
Sirius tried to understand why he was so entranced by this boy but couldn’t figure it out. Maybe he
was still just getting used to this friends thing.
“Um hi ..” the boy said nervously, he had a slight accent, Welsh, Sirius vaguely recognised, “do
you mind if we sit here ? The rest of the carriages are full” he said, biting his bottom lip,
James grinned, sweeping his arms out in an inviting gesture, “the more the merrier !” He answered,
Sirius followed suit, smiling what he hoped was an encouraging smile and nodding.
The boy smiled, walking a little further into the carriage and turning back as the other boy opened
the door to the carriage, apparently upon seeing Remus was invited in,
“Come on Pete, they’re nice” he assured the boy, Sirius glanced at him to see him anxiously
twisting his fingers and it made his stomach drop, reminding him of Antila. The taller boy took
both their trunks and placed them on the racks which Sirius thought was kind.
He was slightly chubby, with straw like hair and similar robes to him, but his face was round and
freckled and friendly and his watery blue eyes looked afraid.
“Yeah my parents aren’t here so we’re good” Sirius joked, trying to put the boy at ease a bit,
thankfully it worked, he walked into the carriage and sat down opposite James as the other boy
took the seat opposite to Sirius.
“Never caught your name ?” James smiled politely, holding his hand out for the smaller boy to
shake, he took it, smile wobbling a little less.
“James. James potter” James grinned, then he turned to the other boy, extending his hand again,
“and who might you be ?” He smiled,
“Remus” he answered, shaking hands briefly with James, Sirius leant over, extending his hand out
to Peter
Remus turned to him once he let go of Peter, holding his hand out to him, “Remus Lupin” he
smiled softly, Sirius took his hand, it was warm and soft and slightly calloused.
“Sirius black” he smiled back as he shook the boys hand, trying to understand
the warm fuzziness spreading through his body.
They sat for a few minutes, allowing silence to settle over them, Sirius didn’t think it was
uncomfortable though, actually, he felt quite at peace. After a minute Remus got out a book and
started reading, James groaned and clutched a hand to his heart as if he were dying.
“Remus ! You read !? Nope, I’m gonna have to escort you out of this carriage, I can’t be friends
with swots” he said dramatically, but there was a quirk to his lips that the other boys could
recognise as a sign he was joking.
“Shush you” Sirius responded grinning, swatting him lightly on the arm, “don’t listen to him
Remus, he clearly just hasn’t got enough brain cells to read” he said, turning to Remus with a
mischievous glint in his eye.
Remus laughed, “yeah, didn’t you know readings intelligent James ?” He asked, his own lips
quirking up,
“So what your telling me is I’ve made mates with a bunch of bloody book worms !?” James asked,
they all nodded their heads solemnly as if they were delivering James some news of great
disappointment.
“I’m sorry to say you have, and I choose my books over you” Remus smirked, Sirius found himself
glancing at the boy, just for a second, his smile lit up his whole face, features brightening with his
eyes that were so .. mesmerising. He found himself drawn to him, perhaps because he seemed to
posses a similar trait of sassiness to Sirius.
“Yup, take us or leave us mate” Sirius grinned, shrugging as if he couldn’t care in the slightest,
James made a humming sound while stroking his hand over his chin as if he was giving the matter
a great deal of thought,
“Suppose I’ll take you” he grinned eventually, which made the other boys laugh.
Eventually, Peter asked which houses they all were hoping to be in which launched James into an
explanation about Gryffindor and how his family had been in it for centuries.
“My sister was in Gryffindoor. My parents er .. well they were okay about it. Said they would have
preferred she was in Slytherin though” Peter said, he always seemed a little nervous when he spoke
and Sirius felt his heart clench in his chest as he was reminded again, of Antila.
“You’ve got a sister ? Lucky !” James exclaimed, “All the houses are good mate so don’t panic !”
James assured him, giving him a light squeeze on the shoulder, Peter smiled.
“Have either of you got siblings ?” James asked Sirius and Remus, Remus turned his page and
glanced up at James with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes,
“Same” James responded, they both turned to Sirius then and Sirius smiled, thinking of Antila.
“I’ve got a little sister. Antila” he said, this made James laugh and Sirius turned to him with a
questioning smile.
“You bloody blacks. Are you all named after constellations ?” He asked, Sirius didn’t feel offended
because his tone was light and his smile was sincere so he decided to play along,
“No actually” he smirked, “andromeda’s named after a whole galaxy” he said, this earned him a
swat round the head from James which only made him laugh.
A small rattling sound was coming from outside the carriage and a moment later the compartment
door slid open to reveal a plum, elderly woman with kind, rosy features. “Anything from the trolly
dears ?” she asked sweetly,
“Ooo” James and Peter both jumped up and began ordering sweets and Sirius reasoned that he had
had breakfast and was now suffering from a bit of a sweet tooth so decided there was no harm in
getting himself some treats.
He tapped Remus gently on the arm, “hey” he smiled, “trolleys here. Wanna get anything ?” He
asked, Remus plastered on a smile that tightened his features, Sirius didn’t like it, it looked wrong,
he liked his real smile.
“I’m good” he said, he was still holding his book open on his lap but his eyes were no longer
scanning the the page,
“What’s up, not hungry ?” Sirius asked lightly, trying to put him at ease a bit,
Remus shrugged, lips tugging down into a small frown which did something funny to Sirius’
feelings, “I don’t know how much it will be” he shrugged, voice quiet as he turned a page.
Ah. Sirius realised the problem now, he took in his slightly shabby appearance, his battered book
and scratched trunk.
He had never really got to know what the opposite side of wealth looked like, he was used to
luxury, to expensive clothing and unnecessary items that cost a fortune and extravagant parties all
to show of the family’s wealth.
However magnificent it seemed, Sirius knew that kind of lifestyle came with a price, and it was a
heavy one.
So while he wasn’t entirely sure how to approach this situation, he decided the best thing he could
do was be kind.
“Well .. if you haven’t got enough I can get it” he said carefully, quietly, James was busy paying
for his sweets, shoving far too much money into the trolley witches’ hands for the pumpkin pasties
and fizzing whiz bees he had purchased, Peter was still selecting his sweets.
“That’s only four sickles dear, a galleon is far too much” the kind lady was trying to say, but James
insistently shoved the galleon into her hand,
“Proper saint he is” he smirked, which made Remus laugh, seeming to put him at ease a bit,
“Um” Remus responded, biting his lip hesitantly, but eventually gave in, “I’ll just have what your
having” he smiled softly, Sirius grinned, thinking privately to himself that he liked Remus’ real
smile a lot.
He got up and Remus followed just as James and Peter came to sit down, arms full of sweets and
Sirius quickly told them they’d be back in a minute.
“Two chocolate frogs and two pumpkin pasties please” he asked the trolley witch, giving her some
nuts and sickles as a tip which earned him a very grateful smile.
He stayed outside, trying to look like he was choosing something else to order while passing
Remus his sweets, “thank you” he smiled,
Remus bit his lip and then began rummaging in his pocket for something, after a moment he pulled
out a handful of brightly wrapped sweets, they were small and interesting looking, Sirius could
make out the words, mars, galaxy, bounty, snickers, in big bold letters.
“Muggle sweets, Remus smiled, “trust me, they’re good. Help yourself” he said, Sirius smiled,
taking one of them that said mars on it, still trying to remain conspicuous so that James and Peter
didn’t realise. He seemed to be safe, they were currently involved in some sort of sweet catching
game.
He popped it into his mouth and began to chew as Remus watched him with an expectant, slightly
smug smile, as if he knew Sirius would love it.
He wasn’t wrong.
As Sirius chewed, the velvety, chocolaty taste was accompanied by some soft sort of cream and
gooey caramel, “wow !” He exclaimed as he finished chewing,
“Told you !” Remus grinned, holding his hand out to him again, “have another” he encouraged,
Sirius took one from his hand, unsure of why his heartbeat was speeding up as he gazed up at
Remus slightly, he was a bit taller then him, and Sirius could see straight into his eyes.
“It’s just chocolate Sirius. No big deal” Remus grinned, repeating his words from earlier, Sirius
laughed as he went back into the carriage and Remus followed after him.
They settled back and joined in the debate James and Peter were having about which flavour of
bertie botts every flavour beans, was the worst one. Sirius relaxed as he ate, feeling entirely at ease,
more then had in a long long time.
