Mobile Computer Lab Program

The EDA Mobile Computer Lab program was established in 2013 to teach basic computer skills and coding to primary school students aged 11-15 in Tanzania. The program's vision is to ensure every public primary school has sufficient ICT equipment and training, in order to prepare students and create equal opportunities. EDA volunteers with training in computer education move between schools with laptops to conduct lessons three times per week. The goal is to help schools establish permanent computer labs that teachers can manage, with EDA providing ongoing support.

STRATEGIC PROGRAM DOCUMENT

Mobile computer lab;

A program under EDA, established in the year 2013 with its main focus on teaching public
primary school pupils on basic practical computer knowledge, coding & robotics (ICT), and how
they can use this technology to learn more about other lessons like Mathematics, English, nature
and so forth. We teach pupils from class five to seven who belong in the age group of 11-15.

Vision

Ensure every school in the public primary education system in Tanzania has sufficient ICT
equipment’s and teaching capacity.

Mission

Prepare a generation of pupils through ICT training with the purpose of creating equal
opportunity and bridging the existing gap.

Mode of Operation

EDA does this program on voluntary basis from its founders and volunteers who are well
educated on the issues of ICT. All members have gone through a Training of Trainers course
(ToT), which qualifies them to be in a better position of teaching pupils and their teachers on
basic computer lessons. Our mobile computer lab can work concurrently with many schools.
Apparently we work with various schools in Dar es Salaam Region, where we move from one
school to another with our own computers to train pupils about technology (ICT).

This is how we work;

 We conduct training sessions (ToT) for computer teachers in a selected school on the
usage of computer and favorable ways of reaching out to the pupils on computer skills.
Teacher’s ToT session usually covers a period of 3 months.
 We use volunteer to teach pupils on computer skills (theory & practical) using the
government syllabus over a period of one year in a selected school covering class 5 to 7
using our own available computers/laptops.
 Our lessons take place thrice a week in a school depending on the school’s timetable
 Upon mutual agreement with stakeholders, we help the school to establish a permanent
computer laboratory for its pupils, which will be managed by the school itself under our
supervision.
 Upon successful program implementation, we move to the next identified school(s).
Why Mobile Computer Lab?

EDA did a survey on computer lessons and their availability in public primary schools in Dar es
Salaam. These were the results;

 Public primary schools do not have special rooms/labs for computer lessons
 There are no computers in public primary schools
 Teachers do not have teaching skills on computer lessons
 For the schools where computer lessons are taught, it’s more of theories and not practical
lessons
 Public school systems does not prioritize ICT education at the same level as their counter
parts in private schools
 Lack of advocacy & accountability around ICT education in public schools.

Sustainability of the program:

Upon mutual agreement with stakeholders, we help the school to establish a permanent computer
laboratory for its pupils, which will be managed by the trained ICT school teachers with frequent
monitoring and evaluation from EDA organization.

Our Approach

1. Work closely with the school management team to look for other donors who will be able to
establish modern and permanent computer labs at their schools for the purposes of program
continuation and sustainability at the school level.
2. Conduct a TOT sessions to school teachers where they get opportunities to learn on how
they can effectively use a computer to put in their class / office records, usage of social
media platforms to engage and connect with their fellow teachers around the Globe for
learning and personal growth purposes.
3. Forming of the computer clubs in schools where pupils get a chance to learn on coding and
robotics as a way of creating an interest for them to like science subjects
4. Involve different stakeholders in the program implementation process such as students,
parents, teachers and the local government officials so as to share ideas and commit
themselves towards securing the equipment’s but also contributing to the operational costs
(whenever needed) such as electricity in the lab, computer repair and so forth
5. Handle the program to the school management after a period of one Year, but EDA will still
be responsible in overseeing its operations and ensuring it benefits the students first.
