Chapter I
Introduction
Filipinos are said to be practical because they always think of ways how to
have better future for themselves, including the lives of their loved ones. Aside from
that, they also think for ways to survive and thrive for every challenge they might
come across. One of these ways is to build their own business, regardless to the size;
they want something for them to generate income to sustain their daily necessities.
An example to this business is the carinderia. Carinderia or karinderya is a Filipino
term for eatery or small-scale restaurant. It serves several homemade dishes in
affordable price for everyone’s capability. This type of business is very demand in
the Philippines. It is important for the people who cannot afford expensive meals,
especially those students who are saving for their allowance for future expenses. On
some other cases, carinderia vendors might meet several problems in negotiating
with the consumes. Along the process of selling, it might happen that carinderias
will cross paths with some obstructions. (Arellano University 2020). Building
carinderias will also help fellow Filipinos to afford foods that are cheap but worth it
Although sari-sari stores and carinderias (small eateries) were supposedly
exempted from total lockdowns, the micro retail sector emerged to be among the
most affected in the situation, requiring a rehabilitation plan that should include a
range of intervention measures to help them get back on their feet, according to a
survey. The Philippine Association of Stores and Carinderia Owners (PASCO) said
that results of their Rapid Assessment of Effects of the Community Quarantine on
Selected Sari-Sari Store and Carinderia Owners showed the need for a rehabilitation
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2
plan that should include a range of intervention at different stages and types of
businesses. The first survey was conducted during the Enhanced Community
Quarantine (ECQ) on a total of 442 selected members (385 sari-sari stores and 84
carinderias) across the country. Survey results showed that during the ECQ period
(March-April), 75 percent out of 84 carinderias temporarily stopped operations and
25 percent out of 358 sari-sari stores temporarily closed. (Manila Bulletin 2020). A
lot of carinderia owners shut down because of the pandemic that happened last
2020-2022 some made remedies some lost hope already.
This pandemic made a lot of carinderia shut down some became
bankrupt some still fighting for its best. This pandemic gave a lot of challenges to
the owners of carinderias such as financial challenges, management to their
carinderia, sales and many more. A lot of challenges were given to the business
owners, challenges like lack of costumers, Infrastructure Some carinderia owners
may face challenges related to infrastructure, such as unreliable power or water
supply, which can affect their ability to operate their business, Regulatory
compliance carinderia owners must comply with a range of regulations and
requirements related to food safety, health, and other issues.
Compliance can be challenging, particularly for those who lack knowledge or
resources to keep up with changing requirements, Marketing and advertising
carinderia owners may have limited resources to promote their business, which can
make it difficult to reach new customers and expand their customer base,
Competition carinderias often operate in crowded markets with numerous
competitors, making it difficult to stand out and attract customers, Access to
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 3
financial resources many carinderia owners operate on a limited budget and may
struggle to secure loans or other forms of financial support to invest in their
business, Food safety and sanitation carinderia owners must ensure that their food is
safe to eat and prepared in a clean and hygienic environment. This can be
challenging, as they may lack the resources or knowledge to properly store, handle,
and cook food.
A lot of struggles or challenges of carinderia owners this study will help not
just only us but also for the people who want to start a business to site the
challenges of a carinderia owners and also with their opportunities during their
journey. One of our reason why we conduct a research we want to know the
Economic impact: Carinderias, which are small food stalls or eateries that offer
affordable meals, are an important part of the informal economy in many countries.
Understanding the challenges and opportunities faced by carinderia vendors
can help policymakers and stakeholders develop strategies to support their
livelihoods and improve the economic impact of their businesses, Food security
carinderias often serve as a vital source of food for low-income households,
particularly in urban areas where access to affordable food is limited.
Researching the challenges and opportunities of carinderia vendors can help
identify ways to improve the quality and availability of food served by these
vendors, which can contribute to improving food security for vulnerable
populations, Public health carinderias play an important role in shaping dietary
habits and food choices in many communities. Researching the challenges and
opportunities of carinderia vendors can help identify ways to promote healthy eating
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 4
habits and improve the safety and quality of food served by these vendors, which
can have significant public health benefits, Social and cultural significance
carinderias are often deeply embedded in the social and cultural fabric of
communities, particularly in urban areas where they serve as important gathering
places for locals.
Researching the challenges and opportunities of carinderia vendors can help
preserve and promote the cultural significance of these businesses, and ensure that
they continue to play a vital role in community life. And to know the opportunities
of carinderia owners how they survive depending to their carinderia and how it
became the source of living.
Significance of the study
Conducting this research will help the community for those who are thinking
of starting their own carinderia this research will help them to know the struggles
and challenges of carinderia owners from past to present. This will help them by
learning those from it and making their strategies more better. Schools can be
helped as well by knowing the struggles or challenges of carinderia owners canteens
in the other hand can improve because some issues of carinderas and canteen have
commons. Students in the other hand can be helped by learning from this research
they can be helped most especially who are learning Business Management and
wants to create a small business like carinderia they can be helped through this
research because knowing the struggles, challenges and opportunities of the owners
learning from it will make the students more strategic by making this business.

of new normal, he was affected emotionally by experiencing mood swings
occasionally. Informant J also supported informant N by saying that he gets easily
irritated while answering his modules. Furthermore, Informant A experienced
anxiety every time he is not sure of his answer to a certain question, because he is
afraid of failing.
These support the study of Falt (2020), “While the headlines have all
focused on the COVID pandemic in schools, there is a connected health crisis that
people must deal with- Emotional Health. Learners of all age groups had them in
person school connection cut off, losing physical access to their peers. Senior
students across the country have had their graduations cancelled. And for too many
students across the country, poor internet connectivity meant that they simply could
not interact or participate at the level they wanted. All of these situations represent
real losses for students and put a burden on their mental and emotional health and
can hold them back from success. If a student has a hard time adjusting to “the new
normal,” or is scared of the uncertainty in their future, they could begin to
experience a high anxiety that will affect many aspects of their lives: their social
connections, their physical health, their emotional health, and indeed, their
performance in school.”
c.) Physically
Moving on to the physical health of the informants, they stated that their
body have suffered in this new normal. Informant K stated that, “I became inactive
in sports and outdoor activities due to complicated schedule.” Informant C and H
also added that they are not properly eating anymore which cause them to weigh
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 9
loss. On the other hand, informant P was able to gain weight in this new normal.
These actions have also led informants A and T to be physically unhealthy by being
easily exhausted and prone to body pain which caused them to be tardy.
These support the study of Health (2020), “Online classes has affected every
aspect of human life including learners. Whether it’s the mental health, physical
health or a combination of both – the learners have had their own share of health
problems during this pandemic phase. Increasing eyesight problems with frequent
headaches are attributed to prolonged screen time. In addition, increasing anxiety
and depression due to home confinement along with sleep disorders are also on the
rise. With due to a lack of outdoor physical activities or due to binge eating and easy
availability of junk food at home, obesity in children on the rise as well.”
On Coping Mechanisms
In coping up actions to address these problems, majority of the informants
have considered time management as their primary action. Informant A and B stated
that in order to cope up with their problems, it is all about how they manage their
time and priorities. Informant Q also added that he/she can overcome his/her
struggles, he/she just have to manage his/her time well. Furthermore, Informant R
managed his/her time by waking up early to do his/her modules and to limit the use
of social media. Informant S also managed his/her time by creating a schedule as
soon as he/she receive the given tasks that need to be answered. He/she also stated
that “I pressure myself to gain the pleasure of relaxation.”
On the other hand, with the help of his/her section, Informant C addressed
his/her problems on lack of cash to avail internet connection through the funds
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 10
raised by his/her section to support students who needs financial assistance in this
new normal. To cope up with the distractions, Informant U concentrates by
motivating himself/herself on his/her goals and dreams and by thinking his/her
inspirations which is his/her family.
Upon sharing the effects of the new normal on the psychological and
physical health of the students, they unanimously agreed that relaxation is the best
way to address them. However, the informants have different way of relaxing
themselves. Informant M stated that “I always make sure to take a break and rest,
basically self-care. Doing the things that I like to do, just like hobbies and stuffs.
Taking my mind off the stressors.” Informant D also relaxes herself by exercising,
listening to music, ‘fangirling’, and watching inspirational video on YouTube. On
the other hand, Informant E relaxes himself/herself by avoiding to use his/her
gadget to rest his/her eyes from radiation. Lastly, informant B and N also relaxes
themselves by praying and meditating.
These support the study of Chin (2020), “The students may be adjusting
from the traditional school set up they were used to. So as parents and guardians, the
devotion in giving them the support and guidance will be of big help. Proper time
management and discipline will be the most engaging tools for the students to pass
through this.”
These also support the study of Walden University (2021), “Pursuing an
online education is an appealing endeavor for learners. However, whether you’ve
chosen to continue your education on campus or online, learning by your own can
naturally be stressful. These simple effective techniques can help you not only in
your learning but in life, they are as follows: a) stay social; b) get enough sleep; c)
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 11
exercise; d) eat well; e) get organized; f) manage your time wisely; g) get help if
you need it; h) take breaks; and i) check in with yourself. Take a moment to
regularly check in with yourself to gauge how you’re feeling, physically and
mentally, then incorporate the techniques that work best for you.”
On Best Practices of Learning in the New Normal
With all the experiences of the informants, they have developed
commendable practices that helped them in their study on the new normal. On
answering their Learning Activity Sheet (LAS), informant C stated that “In regards
to the lessons that I cannot understand, I ask my teachers and classmate for their
knowledge and guidance on the lessons to understand them.” Informant H and L
also stated that they watch tutorials from YouTube to also help them understand the
lessons. In addition, informant X practices answering the modules slowly, one by
one, to fully understand the lessons. Informant K advices, “Do not rush it, read the
modules carefully.”
Furthermore, in regards to the Weekly Home Learning Task (WHLT), the
informants have decided to create their own schedule. Upon receiving the WHLT,
the informants create their own schedule according to their comfortability. In
addition, informant J sets a timer for each subject for him to have time for breaks to
prevent himself from exhaustion. Informant J also stated that “I arrange them by
prioritizing the most difficult subject first.” On the other hand, informant E
practices answering the easiest subject first like those subjects which have multiple
choice tasks and those subject which have the least number of tasks.
These support the study of Kaufman (2020), “Here are some of the learning
practices that can help students focus with their learning: a) Develop new routines
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 12
and strategies. Possible strategies include: Schedule work times and break times. Set
a timer and keep working until it goes off. Try different apps to help with focus. Set
a goal; b) Keep the easy part easy. Students who learn and think differently have an
added layer of difficulty. These challenges can cause more frustration and stress that
can interrupt the learning process. It can help reduce these barriers to learning by
using best practices for designing online assignments. Try these ideas for how to
keep the easy part easy: Teach students how to access class information. Simplify
directions. Be consistent in how class materials are organized and presented.; and c)
Keep up positive relationships with students and families. Maintaining positive
relationships with students and families is essential, especially during distance
learning.”

Chapter III
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, RECOMMENDATION
This portion presents the summary of the findings, the conclusion drawn
from the results of the study and the recommendations forwarded to the best
practices of students in the new normal.
Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has become a global health issue and has had a
major impact on education. The teaching and learning environment is embracing
some changes due to this COVID-19 pandemic. The Department of Education
(DepEd) implemented a modular learning approach to make sure that learning
remains unhampered - a learning delivery mode wherein students will be provided
with self-learning materials. With that, all students were affected to this changes in
the way of learning. Each of them have their own experiences, struggles, and
practices in the new learning setup. This study intended to cite their learning
experience, coping mechanisms about the effects of the pandemic, and
commendable practices of students in the new normal.
The study focused on gathering information about the students’ best
practices by determining their learning experiences, coping mechanism about the
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 14
effects brought by the pandemic, and the commendable practices of learning of the
students in the new normal. The best practices of students in the new normal was
determined to raise awareness, inspire, and help students in their academic
performance in the new learning system. The informants are students of Ilocos Sur
National High School who are currently in Grade-11 were their strand were
disregarded.
On their learning experience in the new normal, they unanimously answered
that this new learning system made their study harder because there are a lot of
changes and adaptation. With this changes, they have faced different experiences.
These include self-study, experiencing hindrances from poor internet connection,
and lack of sleep. This results, the informants took this new normal negatively in a
way that they loss motivation and enthusiasm which made them lazier in doing their
school works. Despite the informants considering this new learning system harder,
some also took this positively. Some of the informants were able to become more
responsible by learning how to manage their time and how to self-study. In addition,
some developed their social skills by gaining friends virtu
On the problems they experience in their studies, the informants have
struggled adapting with the new normal because of slow coping skills. They also
struggled due to the financial problems that limits their access to the internet, they
also struggled due to the lack of guidance from the teachers, and distractions such as
social media, texting, and noises in my surroundings.
On the effect of the new normal in the psychological and physical health of
informants, they were affected similarly as most of them also shared the same
struggles in their studies. Most of the informants were affected by the new normal
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 15
by being stress and exhausted mentally. Stress developed in the minds of the
informants by thinking too much that this new learning did not help them grow or
improve themselves. Some also think that they are answering the modules just to
pass, not to learn. Moving on, they experienced mental exhaustion due to the fact
that they were not able to understand their lessons and due to overthinking. With
that, they were not able to easily focus on their modules. Emotionally, the
informants have suffered emotional outburst. The informants suffered panic attacks,
mood swings, low temperament, and anxiety. Lastly, on the effect of the new
normal to the physical health of the informants they stated that their body have
suffered. They became inactive in sports and outdoor activities. In addition, the
informants were not able to eat properly which caused their weight to be out of
control. Some of them experienced weight loss, while others gained weight.
In result to this experiences, the informants developed cope up mechanisms
on the effects brought by the pandemic. They were able to cope up with their
problems through time management. They practiced time management through
creating schedule like waking up early in the morning to answer the modules. In
addition, they have also focused on their priorities which is answering their modules
by limiting their use of social media and not being bothered by the distraction. The
financial struggles were also addressed through the help of school activities such as
fund raising to give financial assistance to the struggling students.
In addition, upon sharing the effects of the new normal on the psychological
and physical health of the students, they unanimously agreed that relaxation is the
best way to address them. However, the informants have different way of relaxing
themselves. These include the informants doing their hobbies, self-care, exercising,
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 16
listening to music, and watching inspirational videos on YouTube. Some have also
relaxed by avoiding the use of gadgets and by praying and meditating.
With all the experiences of the informants, they have developed
commendable practices that helped them in their study on the new normal. On
answering their Learning Activity Sheet (LAS), the infromants ask their teachers
and classmates to easily understand the lessons. They also watch tutorials/vdeos
about the lessons on YouTube to help them understand it. In addition, they also
practice reading and answering the modules slowly, one by one.
Furthermore, in regards to the Weekly Home Learning Task (WHLT), the
informants have decided to create their own schedule. Upon receiving the WHLT,
the informants create their own schedule according to their comfortability. They set
timer for breaks. They also practice answering the most difficult to easiest subjects
while others are from the easiest to hardest.
Conclusion
The researchers therefore concluded that this study serves as an eye-opener
on the best practices of the students in the new normal. Furthermore, it will raise
awareness, inspire, and help students in their academic performance in the new
learning system as the learning experiences of the informants in the new normal,
coping mechanism about the effects brought by the pandemic, and the commendable
practices of learning of the students in the new normal.were answered.
The results of the study revealed that:
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 17
The new learning system made the informant’s learning experiences harder.
They were able to experience problems particularly in studying and their
psychological and physical health have suffered.
Though the informants’ learning experience became harder, there are still
some informants who approached this positively.
Practicing time management and focusing on their priorities were the coping
mechanisms to address the problems of the informants brought by the
pandemic. They were also able to cope up with it through the help of other
people such us fund raising activities by the school to give financial
assistance to the struggling students. In addition, relaxation such as doing
hobbies, self-care, entertaining themselves, and praying and meditation were
practiced by the informants to cope up with the effects of the new normal in
their psychological and physical health.
The best practices of the informants on answering the LAS are asking their
teachers and classmates, and watching tutorials/videos for better
understanding of the lessons.
The best practices of the informants on answering the WHLT are creating
their own schedule according to their comfortability, setting timer for breaks
to prevent exhaustion, and answering the most difficult to easiest subjects
while others are from the easiest to hardest according also to their
comfortability.
These findings offer new set of ideas in raising awareness of students in the
new normal by determining their learning experiences. Furthermore, it will also
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 18
inspire and help the students by determining the coping mechanism about the effects
brought by the pandemic, and the commendable practices of learning of the
informants in the new normal. This study shows them the best practices of the
informants in the new normal that can be adapt by the students.
It is therefore, concluded that this study will serve as a guideline in
developing the best practices the students can do in this new normal.
Recommendations
In regards to the findings of this study, the researchers recommend the
following for the students:
1. Always try their best to think positively no matter how hard their experience;
2. Be more responsible through proper time management and knowing their
priorities;
3. They should always find time to relax themselves;
4. If they cannot understand the lessons, try their best to ask their teachers and
classmates or watch tutorials/ videos on YouTube for them to understand it;
5. Even though a WHLT is being provide, do not hesitate to create your own
schedule based on your comfortability. Arrange your LAS on either from the
easiest to hardest or from the hardest to easiest ; and
6. Set time for breaks to prevent exhaustion.
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 19
On the other hand, the researchers also suggest that studies such as
effectivity of the new learning system and other studies related to the new normal
will be conducted.
