B. READING AND WRITING FOCUS
Descriptive Text
A text used to describe something such as a place, person, animal and other things is called
as a descriptive text. Besides describing, this text endeavors to explain it in detail in order that
the reader is able to feel and imagine what the writer talks about. In the term of language
features, generally descriptive text uses adjective (such as beautiful, small, tall, cute, etc),
adverb (brightly, well, at night, in Aceh, etc), action verb (sit, walk, sleep, etc), and present tense.
To write a descriptive text, two generic structures should be used, namely:
(i) Identification: introduce a certain object that will be described.
(ii) Description: describe and explain the object in detail
Example of Descriptive Text
Read and answer the question!
MY FAVORITE PLACE
My favorite place to relax is a small Café down the street from where I live. This Café is
on a small side street and as soon as you see it, you feel like going in. There are three windows
on either side of the door, and each window has a small window box with brightly colored
flowers. There is a small wooden door that opens into the Café, and as soon as you go in, you
can see a dozen small tables all around the room. I always like to sit at a small table in the corner
near the front windows. Form here, I can look at artwork on the walls and at the pretty green
plants hanging from the ceiling. With a strong cup of coffee and a good book, I feel very happy
and relaxed in my favorite place.

MY LITTLE BROTHER
I have a little brother. His name is Maulana
Habiburrahman. His nickname is Habib. He is 14 years old now. This
youngest child is a junior high school student at SMP-IT Nurul Fikri
in Banda Aceh. Although we are siblings, our characteristics and
personalities are so different. My brother has well-built body with
average height. He has straight black hair, an oval face, and
brown eyes. His skin is tanned because he likes to play football with
his classmates in the afternoon. Oh, yeah. My brother also has a lot of
friends. Sometimes I am confused why everyone knows him but it is
undeniable that he is so friendly and has gummy smile. Besides,
Habib is also generous and helpful to everyone. He always helps me when I need his help. From
all characters I mentioned earlier, the most unique one is that he is a funny boy. Even though
his nose is flat, he always declares that he is the most handsome man in his class. He often says
that he wants to be a youtuber and desire to beat Atta Halilintar, a young youtuber in Indonesia.
How confident he is. Of course, we laugh at him all the time but he always ignored it. Hopefully,
his dream will come true.
