Lecture PPT - IP Address and Its Types v2.2

This document discusses different types of IP addresses. It covers: 1) IP addresses are assigned to network devices for identification and logical division of networks. 2) Types include unicast, broadcast, multicast by operation; IPv4 and IPv6 by version; static and dynamic by assignment method; and classes A, B, C, D, E. 3) IPv4 uses 32-bit numbers in dotted decimal notation while IPv6 uses 128-bit numbers to address the rapid exhaustion of IPv4 addresses.

Lecture 3

IP Address & its types

Cisco CCNA R&S 200-301 - Network Walks Academy Arman Hasen (CCIE)
What is IP Address?

✓ It is a number assigned to each networking devices / hosts for identification

✓ It is used for logical division of networks

✓ It is used for identification of device location

Types of IP Addresses

A. Types of IP Addresses by Operation Method: Unicast, Broadcast, Multicast

B. Types of IP Addresses by IP Versions: IPv4, IPv6

C. Types of IP Addresses by Assignment Method: Static, Dynamic

D. Types of IP Addresses by Classes: A, B, C, D, E

E. Types of IP Addresses by Visibility: Public, Private

A. Types of IP Addresses by Operation Method

1. Unicast IP Addresses: Send data to a single receiver

2. Broadcast IP Addresses: Send data to all other device on the local network

3. Multicast Addressing: Sends data to a group of specific addresses

B. Types of IP Addresses by IP Versions

IPv4: The original version of IP is IPv4 which was first deployed in 1983.
It is 32-bit number which is usually represented in dotted-decimal format.
e.g. 192.168.0.1

IPv6: IPv6 was devised by IETF in 1995 due to rapid exhaustion of IPv4 address space. IPv4
It is a 128-bit number
e.g. 2001 : ABCD : 0000 : 0000 : 0000 : 0000 : 0000 : 0001

What is IPv4?

✓ Internet Protocol version 4

✓ First version of the protocol to be widely deployed

✓ Current Standard: RFC791 (Sep 1981)

✓ 32-bit numbers

✓ Network Part (N) + Host Part (H)

Examples:
✓ Dotted Decimal Notation e.g. 10.0.0.1 , 192.168.0.1/24
10.0.0.1 /16
255.255.0.0
✓ 232 = 4294967296 = 4.3 Billion total addresses
192.168.0.1 /24
255.255.255.0

What is IPv6?

Why we need IPv6?

IPv6 has a larger 128-bit address space, providing for 340 undecillion addresses

IPv6 Addressing methods & Examples

C. Types of IPv4 Addresses by Assignment Method

1. Static IP Address: Manually Assigned IP Addresses by an admin

2. Dynamic IP Addresses: Automatically assigned IP Addresses by a system or protocol

Class Address Range Default Subnet Mask

Class A 1.0.0.1 – 126.255.255.254 255.0.0.0 /8

Class B 128.1.0.1 – 191.255.255.254 255.255.0.0 /16

Class C 192.0.1.1 – 223.255.254.254 255.255.255.0 /24

Class D 224.0.0.0 – 239.255.255.255

Class E 240.0.0.0 – 254.255.255.254

E. Types of IPv4 Addresses by Visibility

1. Public IP Addresses: IP address which is used to locate the network devices on internet or
Public Networks

2. Private IP Addresses: IP address which is used to locate the network devices on Local or Private
Network. These are the Private IP Address ranges that belong to Class A, B & C
