ACADEMIC READING
• The Reading test consists of 3 different texts (800~1000 words/text) with a total of 40
questions
• Time: 60 mins
• The texts are authentic and academic in nature, but written for a non-specialist
audience. They are similar to the types of texts you maybe expected to read as part of
an undergraduate course. They style may be descriptive or argumentative/discursive
and at least one text contains detailed logical argument. Texts may contain
illustrations. If a text contains technical terms, a simple glossary is provided. The 3
texts are graded from easiest to most difficult. Each text will have 12 – 14 questions

• You have 60 seconds to SKIM the same text by


locating, reading and underlining the topic sentence
in each paragraph.
• As you skim, you can make notes of the paragraph’s
gist.
COMPLETION QUESTIONS
TASK INFORMATION
• Test takers are given a summary of a section of the text, and are
required to complete it with information from the text. The
summary will usually be of only one part of the passage rather
than the whole. The given information may be in the form of:
sentences, a summary, a note, a table, a flow chart. The answers
tend to but do not always occur in the same order as in the text.

• If test takers write more than the number of words asked for, they
will lose the mark.

COMPLETE THE STRATEGY


• Step 1: Familiarize Quickly
Read the question set to get an overall idea.
• Step 2: Check instructions
How many words can be written?
• Step 3: Find clues, identify keywords in the question and match with the text
Read around the blanks. Think of parts of speech/possible answers.
Underline the keywords in the questions
• Step 4: Locate the right part of the text
Read around the right part and choose the answer.
• Step 5: Cross-check and write the answers
Make sure it fits grammatically and is right number of words.

• The Listening test consists of 4 separate parts with a total
of 40 questions
• Time: 30 mins (+10 mins to transfer for your answer)
• Part 1 & 2 are set in social context and Part 3 & 4 are set
in an academic context. There are 10 questions for each
part. You may have between 1 - 3 different tasks/part.
• You will hear the text ONCE ONLY.

LISTENING PART 1
In the Listening test Part 1, test takers will hear a
conversation between two people set in an everyday
social context, for example, a conversation about travel
arrangements. There are 10 questions, and they are in
the same order as the audio recording. The recordings
are heard only once.
The question types are usually Form/Table Completion.
