[ ] Mold and dekle (diy)

●Basic Procedures
- A PULPING

[ ] Rice straw 1kg


[ ] Water 20L
[ ] Caustic soda 180g

S1. Cut the rice straw in small pieces. Screen the rice straw to remove dirt.

S2. In a cauldron cook the rice straw eith water and Caustic soda for 2 to 3 hrs. The straw is
ready when it crumbles when pinch.

S3. Wash the cooked straw under the running water and crush it using blender.

S4. Screen the cooked straw to remove dirt. The remaining materials is called the PULP.
S5. Wrap the pulp eith cheesecloth and squeeze out the water.

B. BLEACHING

MATERIALS
[ ] Rice straw pulp 1kg

[ ] Water 17L
[ ] Soduim hypochlorite 1L

S1. Bleach the 1kg of pulp in a hot water and soduim hypochlorite. Cover and let stand for 1hr.

S2. Wash the bleached pulp. Let dry

C. DYEING

MATERIALS
[ ] Rice straw pulp 1KG
[ ] Water 20L
[ ] Henna leaves powder(DEPENDS ON SHADE OF PAPER)
[ ] Rock salt 200g

S1. Boil 1kg or pulp in a dye bath made form water dye and rock salt for 10mins.
S2 . Wash the pulp in running water. Let dry.

D. SHEET FORMING

MATERIALS
[ ] Rice straw pulp 1kg
[ ] Water 50L
[ ] Starch 100g
[ ] Rosin size 20g
[ ] Powdered alum 40g

S1. Mixed the pulp with water in a large basin.


* For a thick paper use less water. For thin paper use more water.

S2. Add the starch, rosin size, powdered alum. Mix well.

S3. Dip the mold and deckle in to the basin to catch as much as necessary to make paper of the
desired thickness.
S4. Tilt the mold and deckle back and forth to spread pulp evenly.

S5. Separate the deckle from the mold and lay the molded pulp on cheesecloth.

S6. Cover the pulp sheet with cheesecloth and with a rolling pin, squeeze out excess water.

S7. Separate the sheet from the screen and lay it on the drying board

S8. Cover the sheet with cheesecloth and with a rolling pin, squeeze out excess water.

S9. Remove the cheesecloth and let the sheet dry under the sun

LABORATORY NOTES:

PULPING

MEASUREMENT: 50g of Rice Straw


Boiling > start: 10:45 am
> end: 12:45 pm

> Strain the rice straw with cheese cloth


> Wash the rice straw with running water
> Put the rice straw in the blender
> Strain the result
BLEACHING
MEASUREMENTS: 50g rice straw
1000 mL water
100 mL sodium hypochlorite

> Boil water (1000 mL) and put it in the container


> Add 100 mL of sodium hypochlorite
> Sit for 1 hour and 30 mins.
> Wash the rice straw with running water using cheese cloth

DYEING
MEASUREMENTS: 50g rice straw
Rock Salt - 25g
Water - 1000 mL
Henna Powder - 75g

> Add salt to the water


> Add henna powder to the water and pulp
> Start the timer when it’s boiling

*STOVE TEMP. *TIME


1,000 5 mins. ← until it boils
800 3:05 secs. ← boiling
600 7:55 secs. ← sit for 30 mins.
- Add henna powder again 50g
1,200 10mins.
1,000 ← boiling point
800 ← stir

SHEET FORMING
MEASUREMENTS: Rice Straw - 50g
Water - 2000 mL
Starch - 45g
Alum - 15g
Henna Powder - 25g
● For thick paper use less water
● For thin paper use more water

> Add starch, henna, and powdered alum. Mix well.


> Dip the mold in the basin catch as necessary as desired thickness.
> Tilt the mold back & forth to spread evenly
> Separate the pulp on the mold
> Put the molded pulp in the cheesecloth
> Let the sheet dry under the sun.
