Physics Notes AJk 9th Class Chap9

The document discusses various topics related to heat transfer through conduction, convection and radiation. It explains that copper cooking pans conduct heat faster than steel pans due to copper's higher thermal conductivity. It also discusses how convection currents are caused by density differences in heated fluids and how good insulators prevent the flow of heat. Fur keeps animals warm by acting as an insulator, while thick mud walls reduce heat transfer in desert homes.

Transfer of Heat
1. Cooking pans made of steel are provided with extra copper base. Why?
Cooking pans made up of steel have extra copper base because copper
has large value of thermal conductivity than the steel. Due to this, it
conducts heat at a faster rate in comparison to steel which helps in
preparation of foods quickly.
2. A body is at 0°C, is it still radiating? If yes, then how, or no then why?
Yes a body at 0°C keeps radiating unless internal temperature of the
body becomes equal to external temperature. At any temperature
above absolute zero, which is 0K or -273°C, molecular motions keeps
taking place due to which a body has energy (Kinetic energy) and also
has some value of temperature. Now if it’s cool outside, body will
radiate heat and if it’s hot outside, it will absorb heat in the form of
radiations.
3. Pieces of Iron and glass are heated to the same temperature, why does
Iron feel hotter on touching?
Iron feels hotter than glass when heated to the same temperature due
to the fact that iron is a good thermal conductor is comparison to glass.
4. Convection is difficult in solids. Why?
Convection is difficult in solids because solids have tightly packed
particles which cannot move around freely and for convection to
happen, molecules must be free to move from one place to another.
5. How does the fur of animals keep them warm?
Fur of the animals acts as an insulator which prevents heat flow from the
bodies of the animals to the cold outside because insulators always keep
the hot bodies hot and cold bodies cold.
6. What are the convection currents caused by?
Convection current is caused by density difference of a fluid which in
turn happens due to the differential heating. (When water is placed on fire,
then the layer of water at the bottom is hottest because It is closer to the burner. This
extra heat causes the molecules to spread apart due to which they become less
1
dense. These less dense molecules rise up and cold molecules the top of the pan sink
down to replace their position.)

7. In desert regions that are hot in day time and cold at night time, the
walls of houses are often made of mud. Why is it important that mud
walls be thick?
Mud walls in desert regions must be thick in order to reduce the process
of conduction during day and night. At day time, it is hooter outside and
comparatively cooler inside therefore heat is to flow from outside to
inside the rooms through the walls and reverse happens at the nights.
To stop this phenomenon, walls must be made thick.
8. If you step quickly on red-hot coals with bare feet, you are probably
safe. What is the physics behind it?
A successful quick fire walk is due to the low thermal conductivity of the
red hot coal, an insulating layer of ash and the short time of contact
between the coals and the soles of the feet.
9. Does a good insulator prevent heat from getting through it or does it
simply slow its passage?
A good insulator has a higher value of R which is the ability of a material
to resist heat and it does not let the heat go through it.
10.What happens to the volume and temperature of air as it rises up?
Air rises up due to the loss of its density which happens when molecules
spread apart. As a result, volume of air molecules increases and
temperature decreases. .
11.If 40°C air feels warm and comfortable to us, why does 40°C water feels
cool when we swim in it?
40°C air feels comfortable and water feels cool because of the thermal
conductivity difference. Thermal conductivity of air is less than that of
water due to which it takes more time to take the heat out of our body
and make us feel cooler. In contrast, water has high thermal conductivity
and it takes heat out of our body quickly due to which it feels colder.
12.What are the consequences of global warming?
Global warming has some of the following consequences:
 Melting of ice caps
 Increase in sea level and surface temperature 2
 Increase in air temperature
 Change in weather patterns

 Ocean acidification.
13.We prefer to wear dark coloured cloths in winter. Why?
We prefer to wear black in winter because black color is a good absorber
of heat. It absorbs the solar energy and keeps our bodies warm
14.Why ventilators are kept at the top in the rooms?
The basic purpose of the ventilators is to get the hot air out of rooms.
And we know that hot air, being less dense, rises up in the rooms. That’s
why ventilators are kept at the top to give a passage to hot air out of the
room.
