What is the difference of intellectual disability and learning disability?
Intellectual disability and learning disability are the terms that are used to describe
difficulties in cognitive functioning. However, these terms have their own different
interpretations. Intellectual disability may affect all aspects of a person's development. Such
a person has delays in functioning beyond intellectual aspects or a person may have limited
language or impaired speech and may not perform well academically. While learning
disability affects an area or particular mode of learning or processing. Such a person has
difficulty in acquiring basic skills or academic content due to difficulty. These difficulties may
impact a person’s ability to read, write, spell, think, speak, listen, or do mathematics. With
that, compared to a person with learning disabilities, person with intellectual disabilities
have impairments to learning that are broader and more significant.
What is Montessori Approach?
The Montessori approach encourages children to realize their full potential by
allowing them to freely explore an environment that is intended to fit their developmental
and unique learning requirements and allows them to direct their own learning. Children are
assisted in developing their self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-discipline in order to
become socially responsible and engaged citizens. Thus, this approach places the child to be
the center of the educational setting. In order to see and monitor children's natural growth,
so that an environment must be created that allows adults to assist in following the child's
lead.
